I've seen a lot of pictures of marching bands that work all summer to do competitions every week or so. My school doesn't compete, although we still work hard to do some BA drills for shows. My question is, which do you think is better? You can also share what kind of marching band your school is.

There are disadvantages and advantages to each you get to go against other bands and see other band in competitions but from what i have heard is that if your non-competitive you learn a new drill and music for every home football game (some non-competitive do some dont) which gives variety i have never done non-competitive so i dont know what its like

I'm in a college marching band, so naturally we don't go to competitions. But we are still very competitive in the sense that we always try to be the best :p

The pros and cons are basically what NeoRaptor mentioned. We don't get to meet other bands often, except for our rival bands (who we pretty much hate so we don't talk to them that much anyway).

I'm glad we do a different show every game though, I'd be bored out of my mind doing only one halftime show for the whole season.

I love competitions, because you're not just performing during football games so people aren't as bored for 15 or 20 minutes.

I'm gonna miss high school band competitions when I graduate this year. I would love to march DCI, but I'm a flute player with no time to pick up a brass instrument. :[ I will still do marching band in college, of course, but it won't be the same - it's just for entertainment for people who are there mainly to see the football game.

Well, that depends on how good your football team is wink I know back in the days when our team sucked, people would come for the band and leave after halftime...

My band is a competition band, and I think I prefer it that way. Competitions are what really drives my band to get better. Without them, I don't think there would be incentive to focus on things like technique, which the average person might not notice. I'm sure band would still be fun without them, but it wouldn't be on the same level.
