There's no big secret or anything. People buy gold shop items for more than they're worth because they just don't read. Erm, because people don't know any better. People just don't read the info given to them. The marketplace lets you know if there's a store price and if it's sold in a store. It even links you to the store if it's found in one.
All items in the marketplace are being sold by Gaians. Gaians decide the prices. Some people like to sell the gold shop items for higher than store price just to see if they can. And some people actually buy them because they don't know any better and don't read the store price.
The store price is 5g and it's found in the store, Gambino Outfitters. People buy it on average for 105g, but they shouldn't. If you see an item like this, buy it for 5g from Gambino Outfitters. All gold shop items (but not Dernier*Cri) stay at the same price. Those shoes will always be worth 5g. You can buy them for 5g from the gold shops or just wait and hope someone puts it up in the marketplace for less than 5g.
Some items have store prices, but aren't found in the gold shops. Those items come from the Cash Shop items known as Chance Items (CIs). In those cases, the items will have a store price but there will be no link to a store. Those items can be rare, so they're sold for more than the "store price." Here's an example of a CI item:
There's no store listed because this item is not found in a store. The price is dictated by supply and demand, not by its "store price." (The item has a store price only so people can sell it back to the shops for gold. However, since it's rare, people can get more money by selling it to other users instead.) With these sort of items, you'll have to watch the graphs to see whether the price is increasing or decreasing to figure out when a good time to buy it is. These items don't have a set price because they can't be bought straight from a store.

there is a usefull strategy for stuff that costs 500+ in shops, your if your tired of your crappy items but they will only sell right of your inventory for about 5 gold, you can goto the market and post it about 100 lower then the shops price, people will buy it..if you didnt really understand your more then welcome to say,um dude...fix it..

haunter xx there is a usefull strategy for stuff that costs 500+ in shops, your if your tired of your crappy items but they will only sell right of your inventory for about 5 gold, you can goto the market and post it about 100 lower then the shops price, people will buy it..if you didnt really understand your more then welcome to say,um dude...fix it.. That is a good strategy. XD I refuse to pay store price for items, so I always go to the marketplace. I'd by those items. ;D
Items sell back to the inventory for half their store price value. An item with a store price of 500g will sell for 250g to your inventory. If you put it up for sale in the market for 400g, you'd get (400 - 2%) 392g when someone buys it. That's more than 250g, so it's still worth it. And yep, people might not buy that item from the marketplace for 500g since it sits in a gold shop for 500g. So, some money is better than the item not selling at all.
