Okay, so recently I finished typing up a short story that I've been working on for a while. It was fun and made me sad to put away the lives of these characters, but I thought that I needed someone else's opinions about my characters and writing skills. So here is the prologue to my first, completed, story Everything Falls, the first of three stories about Rachel, Aubrey, Elena and Dante, who is not yet introduced. Hope you enjoy this.
Everything Falls
Prologue
The ticking of the clock echoed in my mind as I came to a semi-conscious state. It wasn’t nearly as peaceful as I wished it to be, but I guess that not everything runs smoothly I was awake enough to hear a light tapping, barely audible over the clocks noise.
I tried to wake myself, to drag my heavy eye lids open, but it didn’t seem to be working. My mind sighed in frustration, but soon gave up too go back into the warm embrace of sleep.
“Amera, tera tote companior.” I jerked awake with no resistance this time, yelping in fear. I flew up off of my bed, across the room and spun around in utter shock. The words had been spoken right in my ear, in a deep masculine voice. I hadn’t recognized the voice, but the words had been another matter. Traitor, we know where you are.
My eyes skipped franticly over the room in my sudden fear. The owner of the voice was no longer here, but he had been.
“Rachel?” Another voice called out as my bedroom door swung open. Two woman, my best friends, burst through the door; hands out in the air, ready to attack an intruder.
Aubrey quickly looked around the room before dropping her hands. Her long blonde hair was seemingly perfect, even though she had just jumped out of bed. Her blue eyes sparked, showing how ready for a fight she was. Her t-shirt proclaimed ‘I will kick your a** if you don’t leave’, which matched her fighting attitude.
Elena was immediately at my side asking me what was wrong. Her green eyes were questioning underneath her heavy red hair. She was wearing a plain white shirt, but was wearing a pair of sweat pants that had ‘Budweiser’ written all over them.
“A tracker was here, they know where we are!” I choked out, the blood draining from my face. Elena fell back, her feet stumbling for purchase. Aubrey’s eyes immediately dulled and she fell deathly still.
“We don’t have to run this time Aubrey, we can stay and fight. We’re stronger than them now.” I quickly breathed when I realized why she had shut down completely.
Most of our lives the three of us had been running and hiding. We had been born into a family called the ‘Eternal’, a group dedicated to the eradication of all things supernatural. The only thing was they had supernatural hybrids born into the family to hunt anything with strange abilities.
The three of us had been born hybrids to be broken and culled into hunting. We were not ordinary though and could not be broken due to a bond that our supernatural parents put over us. It made our wills ours and our life forces eternal, as the family name claimed.
Elena was the first to be born, four hundred and twelve years ago. She had been born to a hunter mother and a mind demon father. She had been the first to break free from the family. She was the oldest and had waited a long time until another was born to deny the hunters her power.
Aubrey was born three hundred and two years ago and had the hardest time breaking free. The family had tried to beat her into submission and that had been their downfall. Her mother had been a temptress demon, which meant she had control over the element of water. She had let loose her powers and had killed many hunters. She got away and quickly met Elena. It was as if fate pulled all the runaways together.
I was the youngest, with only a hundred and fifty-seven years under my belt. My father’s origins were unknown, so I was labelled a tracker. A tracker was a hybrid with the power to hunt anything to the ends of the world and to teleport myself, sometimes others, anywhere. That was all we knew about what I could do so far. I was different in many ways, because all I had to do was flash myself out of the Eternals, I was one of only three trackers and I was born from a consensual relationship.
Aubrey had her own singularities though. Recently she had met a boy named Jason and he was potentially her soul mate. She hadn’t told him yet and now with the threat of the family on our backs, she may have to leave him. If she left, he would probably be killed anyways, but if we stayed the threat increased. She could bind their life force together, but he might choose to run away from her. Even now she feared telling him anything, but I knew that that was probably the only thing she could do now.
“Of course we’re staying and fighting.” Aubrey growled, coming back to herself. Her fists clenched as both Elena and I watched her. “I’m not running away this time, I need to protect him.”
“We have your back Aub, Jason’s part of the family now.” Elena reassured our friend. Aubrey slumped to the floor, leaning against the wall. She sighed, but nodded her head to show us that she had heard. “Don’t worry, were much stronger than we used to be. They won’t even get close to Jason.”
It was the true start to a war that had been going on for centuries. None of us would just bow down and die, we would fight until the bitter end, because this time we weren’t just protecting ourselves.
