Hey guys.....I recently got a new drumset and my snare drum sounds horrible!! I've tried everything I can think of; tightening the snare, tightening the skin with a drum key......I'm lost as to what else I can do!! I'm kinda new at this, so could somebody help me out? Thanks.

Well, I could help if I could hear the drum. Sorry.
If you have a drumming teacher, ask them. I'm sure they'll be really helpful.

Check the sides of the drum see if the string/strrip is tightend, teh head has to be really tight but the rattle at the bottom is the most important, check to see if thats tight.

Step one: Take OFF top head. Step two: Loosen snares all the way. Step three: Tap around the bottom head to make sure every lug is turned to the same degree. They should all sound the same when tapping just inside the rim. Step four: Replace Top head, making it finger-tight and then using a drum key to tighten in a star pattern. Step five: After making sure the top is tightened correctly, begin to turn and tighten the snares. Step six: If you still have an unpleasant ringing, try taping some cotton or cloth to the top head to reduce unneeded vibrations.

Alhandra sort of said this already, but muffling might help, also.

I have the same problem with mine. The ringing is really annoying, so I usually play with a stack of paper on it, lol. Does anyone know where you can buy those little wax paper circles to go on your drums and what they are called?

The ringing is fixed by drum rings...Can get at any music store.
And instead of trying to tighten everything, try loosening a few things.
Also if that doesnt work take everything off and start from scratch. If you screw up in the first few stages of putting a drum together it sounds a little bad. For example being out of tune on the head where the snares rest. sweatdrop
PM me if you got any other questions, I'll be glad to help.
