. . . If it is possible to grow a Sakura tree in the Chicago area? More specifically, my mother wants a Shidarezakura (drooping sakura).

i guess so....I mean I've never tried but in Romania we have quite a few in our parks. Winters are pretty harsh and summers excruciatingly hot...They haven't died so far! biggrin
I've seen them in Toronto. So yeah probably if you take good care of it and make sure bugs don't infest it.

Alright, I don't have many answers, but I have some! Sakura trees are part of the Prunus family. You may look up various types in THIS catalogue. The Prunus section starts on page 74. There are pictures of the flowers with the names on them and a small description of the tree. If you're interested in a particular one, perhaps look up the name of it on google. You'd be amazed just how much you can find on it. Unfortunately, there are only a few. I have yet to look up the tree I want.
