I hear often how expensive and time consuming Lolita Fashion can be, both to make and to purchase. It takes a lot to get the clothes, the hair, the makeup, the shoes, and the accessories, whether it's working, saving and spending, or working, cutting and sewing. Others hunt for bargains, but that takes time too.
So have you ever faced criticism for spending too much of anything, not just time and money, on lolita? How do you deal with it and feel about it?
***Please do not list numbers for income, budget, prices, sales, etc. If it's relevant, just say, hefty allowance, expensive, got it for a steal, fairly inexpensive, moderate income, etc. Wealth is relative and is also a personal matter.***

So, I get crap for spending money and LOTS of time on making lolita accessories and cosplay accessories, spending to much time on hair and even learning Japanese! But they're my hobbies. I didn't think they were bad ones.
I don't watch too much tv or sloth around. I get out, party and socialize, so I'm not a hermit either. I watch american shows and listen to mostly american music. But still people harangue me about being an obsessive weaboo who only enjoys things if they have to do with Japan.
In my defense, lolita isn't solely about Japan, and a lot of the anime I like is also not made in Japan. :/ I study Japanese because it's the second most commonly used language in my area and workplace and will help me advance. To be honest, I really want to learn Korean because it sounds beautiful and the written language looks like delicious bubble tea and straws to me. O_o
The hair, well, I'm mixed. I have nappy hair. I have to flat iron all the time anyway or else people will crit me for not spending enough time on my hair. Since it's already so high maintenance, what's a little more work? And crazy colors and big lolita curls make me feel cute.
I work hard and help out my family and friends and do my best not to be selfish or spend wastefully. I handle my bills and save responsibly, more so than other women I know who are my age. So what if I like to blow my poker chips on fabric, curlers and bows instead of martinis and vacations? Lolita and cosplay ARE my vacation. I feel I've earned them.
I guess I just remind myself of these things when people give me crap. Besides, if people don't like you or what you do, they most likely don't have a very good reason.

I dont consider it indulging myself if I only get lolita items for a holiday or birthday presents.Cause I really didn't buy it with my own money.Besides I dont really see a point in getting upset over something you love.Or whats the point?Sure you may have spent 300$ on a dress. But you could have spent 300$ on a handbag.Even though you carry a handbag where ever, but a dress is in ,my opinion, simply more enjoy-able.Time really isn't to big of a problem if you have say weekend free or days off work or school and have nothing planned.Since I dont go to freinds houses or after school things I have alot of free. I hope you all find reason-able solutions for you problems! biggrin

Every once and a while I'll get flak from my family about my "costly foreign dresses". It dies down quickly, though, because I couldn't care less what others (including my family) think of how I spend my money. Its mine to spend on what I want, regardless if it goes to a video game, a dye job, a fancy dinner or an imported dress ♥

Well, my father says that I should flesh out my wardrobe with other things...(I don't think he really knows about all the business clothes I have...I totally need a new skirt suit though...) To appease him, I try to buy things that are very versatile...Instead of getting a pink lolita coat (I'd be so afraid of getting it dirty! (>.<)) I bought a dark purple wool cape that I can wear to my cold lecture hall and wear over lolita.
I'm, a pretty good saver, and I manage to do well with a small budget for lolita. Thrift stores and creativity go a long way. Once and a while, I'll feel like maybe I'm spending too much, but then I think of how much I will enjoy my purchase. It's not wanting; it's loving what you have. It may take me a while to put together an outfit (a year and a half sometimes), but I'm patient. (I just finished a Mad Hatter inspired lolita! My parents were quite impressed.)
I know too much to be a weaboo. Japanese is my minor and languages are my life. I can walk down the foreign language hall and end up speaking three languages other than English in one go.
I spend my money on other things as well, but I also squirrel a decent sum away in the bank. I'm sorry that this was a bit disconnected...

Since I mainly always look for the best deal I don't really spend that much clothing, special because I have my favorite ebay sellers where I know I always get what I paid for.
