Today marks the 2nd day of Chanukkah ..the Jewish Feast of Dedication, also called the Festival of Lights. Chanukkah commemorates when the Temple was rededicated by Judah Maccabee also called Yehuda HaMakabi "( the Hammer) after it had been polluted by the Greek idol worshippers. Judah ordered the Temple to be cleansed, a new altar to be built in place of the polluted one and new holy vessels to be made. Olive oil was needed for the menorah in the Temple, which was required to burn throughout the night every night. But there was only enough oil to burn for one day, in faith it was lit, yet miraculously, it burned for eight days, the time needed to prepare a fresh supply of oil for the menorah. An eight day festival was declared by the Jewish sages to commemorate this miracle. This story is in the Apocrypha in the books of Maccabees.

Through the Maccabees came the Hasmonean line of kings and priests...including Agrippa, and Herod. Because of the events of Chanukkah...the Rededication, Herod's Temple was built. The only place in the biblical canon Chanukkah is mentioned is in John 10;22 "And it was at Jerusalem, the Feast of the Dedication (Hanukkah), and it was winter." Chanukkah is also called the Festival of Lights, Y'shua is the Light that shines in the darkness. It has been conjectured by some Messianic Jewish believers in Y'shua that Mary was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit and conceived at Chanukkah and born on Sukkot ( the feast of Tabernacles). Sukkot is 9 months after Chanukkah. This is alluded to in the 1st Chapter of John, verses 9 through 14. Interestingly enough the theme of Sukkot is Immanuel~ G-d tabernacling with man.

Arise, and shine! Let your light shine for all the nations to see! For the glory of the LORD is shining upon you. Darkness as black as night will cover all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the LORD will shine over you. All nations will come to your light. Mighty kings will come to see your radiance. Isaiah 60:1-3
