Interestingly, the first essay in history was written in Greece and it was more of an elaborate complaint about how Greek children are lethargic and will cause Greece's ruin. The author then contrasted this with Egypt, where he believed they were much better.
Society is unchanging, as far as I can tell. Naysayers will continue to believe the world is getting worse, but Roman graffiti from 50 BC is the same as the graffiti of today. Indeed, we are at our most civilized epoch in history today. Never has the definition of "atrocity" been so wide, nor has cruelty ever been as universally abhorred. So I don't see that this generation is any different from the last, save for the progression of humanism as a contrast to past barbarism.
