Is birth control (of any form) allowed in Islam?

I'm not sure, but I do believe it's allowed. Just as long as you use it for the right reasons.

Yes, as long as its not permanent, like visectomy or hysterectomy.

Quote:
Since Islam considers quality more important than quantity, if the couple is resorting to contraception for any one of the following reasons, it may be considered permissible:

1. If both spouses are students whose academic performance would be adversely affected by taking on the added responsibility of parenting.

2. If they are too young to shoulder parental responsibilities.

3. If one or both of them are weak or sick and expect to take on the responsibility when the condition improves.

4. If they are burdened with responsibilities of taking care of their parents in advanced age, which drain them physically and emotionally.

5. If they are doing so only for a limited time (for instance the first one or two years) in order to be able to get to know each other, and thus prepare themselves better for shouldering such responsibilities.

6. If they are doing so in order to have gaps between pregnancies with a view to provide quality care and attention to the existing children.

7. If the wife cannot bear children because of medical reasons.

Now coming to the final point in your question, I must say:

Since the right to have children is shared equally between husband and wife, neither one of them should resort to contraception unilaterally. Rather, he or she is allowed to do so only through consensual agreement. The only exception to this rule is when the pregnancy is determined to be a risk to the wife’s life. In this case, she does not need permission of her husband to resort to contraception.”

That is a quote from a scholar, from the Islamic institute in Toronto :3

Islamonline is one of my favourite places for questions ^-^

Yes, birth control is allowed for the right reasons. It is perfectly fine to use it. The companions of the Prophet (saw) also used methods of birth control, such as early withdrawal.

But one thing I've learned to take into account, though, is whether it has any harmful effects, physically or emotionally.

Birth control pills have certain side effects, although the chances of most these are (in most cases) so small, I don't feel it is enough to prohibit them (plus they also have positive side effects). But just as an example, for a lot of women birth control pills lower their libido, and this could potentially cause issues between the husband and wife. That would be the time to look for other methods of contraception, perhaps, or find some other solution.

Similarly, women who are over 35, smoke, and are overweight are at a much higher risk of DVT when they take birth control pills.
Another example is men and women who are very sensitive or allergic to latex, of course the couple should then find an alternative method of birth control so as to not harm themselves.

.......

i take it Islam doesn't believe in the possibility of their customs becoming outdated? o_O; human population is WAY bigger than it should be, no family should be EXPECTED to choose between parenting and complete abstinence!

I think you might not have understood some of the things said in this thread ^^; Islam doesn't force any couple to make that choice. In fact, like Apple said, birth control is allowed.

Also, Islam emphasises the fact that sex is for fun as well. It encourages men to engage in foreplay for their wives, and it encourages couples to play with each other, have fun with each other (: It is regarded a very important aspect of marriage and intimacy.

Masha allah, donating blood is good.
I donated in May, but need to again soon.
