I really thought self-harm was a haram in Islam, but then i was reading about Shi'a Muslims who perform self-flagellation during the Zanjeer Zani ritial to mourn the death of Hussain during Muharram, on the Day of Ashura. This surpised me since i had heard of this but i didnt know it was connected to Islam by Shia Muslims >< Is self harm a haram? Do any other sects of Islam do this sort of thing?

Well anything that has to do with harming yourself is wrong. I'm not sure if it's haram exactly, but I don't think it's allowed. For any reason.
I mean suicide is haram, so I would imagine any kind of self harm would be too.

It depends on the person's pain tolerance. Some people actually enjoy pain. The thing is, smoking is harming oneself too, but it's not haram.

Self-harming is wrong b/c the body is a loan from Allaah SWT and on the Day of Judgement, your body will testify against you. Also what the Shia do on Ashura is an innovation to Islam.

Why are ear and nose piercings acceptable? I know that most body modifications are haraam, so why the exception?

IDK
My mom is very strict about this whole self harm thing...Last year during Spring Break...I had suicidal thoughts and almost....ALMOST...(just trying to emphasize the point) cut my self...
If anyone commits suicide they will immediately go tho hell...cause Allah can only decide when you die.
But you knew that...

Weather Islam forbids it or not, its not good for you mentally or physically. You should see a school counselor and tell them your concerns if you still feel that way.

It depends on the person's pain tolerance. Some people actually enjoy pain. The thing is, smoking is harming oneself too, but it's not haram. Scholars these days say smoking shouldn't be allowed since it's not only affecting the smoker, but also affecting those around him/her. The carcinogenic effect of some of the chemicals in the smoke increases when exposed to air, making second hand smoking far more dangerous. Whether it's haram or not, you shouldn't harm yourself, nor should you harm others. Our body was given as an Amanah to care of till we die. Tattoos, or mutilating the skin to make designs, probably existed during the time of the Prophet (PBUH) because I think I read/heard a Hadith against it. Ear piercings have a story behind it, but I forgot. My bad. biggrin I dunno, maybe someone else in this guild might know.

Smoking in Malaysia is now haram to Muslims. I think it was last year. Because I believe harming yourself is consider haram. And also you can't harm others though. But still, since this fatwa is still new, not many can stop smoking immediately. Even my father still smoking.
And I think tattoo is haram too. Plus... you can't pray if you had tattoo on your body. I think the reason because when you take wudu' the water didn't make a straight contact on your skin. same applies if you color your nails or dye your hair.

The ink in a tattoo is injected right under the skin so it doesn't prohibit the water from making straight, direct contact with the skin's surface.

Any self harm of any kind is Haram, including Tattoos and smoking, What Shi'a do is punish themselves for the mistakes they have done by harming themselves, it's not right, but it became apart of their traditional concepts I guess.

Self harm is definitely haram. As sister Bilqisnargis said, your body will testify against you. You have been given this body as a gift and Allah swt will ask you what you did with it and how you treated it. So what the shi'a do is, in fact, haram. Quote: The Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) also said: "A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ... his body as to what he engaged it in." Tattoos are haram but not because it's harming oneself or because you can't make wudu (you can), but because you are permanently altering the creation of Allah (swt) by injecting a permanent ink into the skin. Quote: “There is no altering Allah’s creation.” (Ar-Rum: 30) Piercings could fall under the same category, but I believe ear piercings are generally allowed for women as a beautification seeing as it is something minor and doesn't harm the body so much. As with everything, excessiveness is bad. I believe the scholars are divided on this one. Read more about piercingsAnother answer hereSmoking is certainly deemed haram, because it harms the body. It may not have been mentioned by name in the Qur'an, but it still falls under the category of things that are harmful for the body *and* others around you. It is most definitely considered haram by the majority of scholars.
