This is my fanfiction. This takes place right before L would have gotten killed.
L was sitting in a chair eating a piece of cake and drinking black coffee. He was thinking of thinking of how Matsuda's mission would go.
---flashback---
"Hey Ryuzaki? You wanted something."
"Yes," Ryuzaki said as he took a big bite out of a cupcake. "I wanted to know if you would go to Light Yagami's house."
"Sure, i guess."
"When you're there, you must be as inspective as you can, almost obnoxious. Search everything. Oh and wear this." L handed Matsuda a microphone. "Turn it on when you get to his house. I'll be able to listen in. If anything should go wrong, well... we'll know."
"Uh, that's reassuring."
"Don't worry. Nothing should happen. That's just a... precaution, really."
"Oh, okay then."
"Well, you should go now."
"Okay."
---normal time---
L turned on the microphone screen.
"Hey, Light." Matsuda said.
"Matsuda? Did you need something?" Light asked.
"No, not really. I just wanted to see what's up."
"Nothing much."
"Okay then."
In L's lab, L said, "Now here comes, Mr. Yagami."
"Can I come in?" Matsuda asked.
"Not now. Maybe another time?" Light suggested.
"Oh, okay."
"Oh, Matsuda. What are you doing here?" Mr. Yagami asked.
"Oh, I was just seeing what Light was up to."
"Well, come in, come in."
"But Dad."
"Nonsense, Light."
"Thank you, Mr. Yagami." Matsuda said.
"Now Light, show Matsuda your room."
"Okay." Light said.
"So, Light, how's Misa-Misa?" Matsuda asked.
"She's good."
"Did you figure anything out on the Kira case?"
"No..."
"Oh well."
"Ooh, Light, what's this?" Matsuda picked up several tapes.
"Those are videos i recorded a long time ago."
"What about these?" Matsuda picked up several notebooks off a table.
"Those are just notebooks."
"What about..."
"Hey, Matsuda. Close your eyes and turn around; I've got a surprise for you."
"Okay."
Back in L's lab L was freaking out. "No! Matsuda!" He contacted Mr. Yagami.
Back in Light's room, Matsuda had his eyes closed, but he heard scribbling. He opened his eyes to see Light scribbling in a notebook, grinning.
"Light?" Matsuda asked.
L was talking with Mr. Yagami. "Get in Light's room... NOW!"
"What's wrong..."
"It doesn't matter. Just get up there."
Mr. Yagami ran up into Light's room, but it was too late. Matsuda was lying on the floor, dead. The Notebook already hidden. Light looked terrified.
"Matsuda! Dad, Matsuda's, dead."
"Matsuda!"
L was sat in his chair, sipped on his black coffee, and said, "Damn..."
Later that day, L listened to the tape over and over again. Focusing on the scribbling he heard in the background. L deducted that it was a Death Note, like the one they found after the Yotsuba case.
L met with all of the case members to join in mourning. A piece of paper from the Death Note and a pen in his pocket. He planned to expose Light as Kira today.
Light on the other hand had Misa and she knew L's real name. He was going to write the name down at the funeral. He wanted to see L die.
The next day, at the funeral L and Light sat next to each other. They sat through the ceremony without interference, but when it ended L stood up and said, "Kira is in this room. In fact, he's sitting right next to me. Kira is none other than Light Yagami. You see, Matsuda was willing to die for the Kira case. Because of him, we have evidence to convict him. You see, Light asked Matsuda to turn around so he could write his name down and kill him. He used a Death Note similar to the one in the Yotsuba case and has that notebook thanks to the second Kira, Misa Amane. Light, somehow planned on killing me today, at the funeral. He has a piece of the Death Note in his pocket. I also have a piece of the Death Note in my pocket as a precautionary measure. Light killed Matsuda and Light is KIRA!"
Light fidgeted in his chair and stood up. "No! I am not Kira! The piece of paper in my pocket is not from the Death Note."
L interrupted Light and said, "Are you sure?"
Light said, "Yes."
"If you are so sure, than let me write your name on it."
"N-no!"
"What, do you doubt yourself?"
"No!"
"Then, let me see the paper."
"No!"
"We have proof your Kira. Come in peacefully or let me write your name down on the piece of paper. You will die or you will rot in prison, at best."
"NO!" Light pulled out the piece of paper and started to scribble down L's name.
L kicked Light and he let go of the paper. L picked it up and saw that the name on the paper wasn't his, but Light's.
"This isn't a piece of the Death Note."
"I told you. I'm not Kira!" Light grinned turned around and walked towards the door.
"Wait. Check his pockets! He used the paper incase this happened. He knew i would expose him today!"
Mr. Yagami grabbed Light's shoulder. "Light..."
"Dad, I'm not Kira."
"Let me check your pockets."
Mr. Yagami pulled out another piece of paper.
"Let me see that." L said. L pulled out his pen and started to scrawl Light's name on it.
"Stop it! I'm Kira, okay? But is killing criminals so bad? They need to suffer for their actions!"
L stopped writing. "Just in time." L revealed that he wrote down every letter of Light's name except for the final letter "i". "Mr. Yagami." L said.
"Son..."
"Dad. I-I just wanted to make the world a better place."
"I know." Mr. Yagami said as he handcuffed him.
Light was trialed, charged, and Executed.
L sat in his chair, eating a piece of cake. "It's a shame Light was Kira. He really was a genius. He rivaled my own intellect. Oh well," L said as he took a big bite of his cake.
