I want to make a high waisted suspender skirt, similar to this Infanta skirt. I don't have a pattern, but the thought that it was simply making the skirt, then attaching a top bodice piece. Is that right, or is there another way to do it? I'm a little concerned about the fabric I want. I wasn't sure if this fabric is a little too busy for a suspender skirt and if it would be awkward to have a mismatched pattern where the skirt and bodice attach. Also, should the suspenders be a solid black, since making it out of the patterned fabric would be a bit much? It's a real lovely print, and perfect for the classic lolita part of my wardrobe.

This tutorial explains the process behind making a highwaisted skirt:

http://community.livejournal.com/egl/9350312.html

You have the right idea, more or less. You construct the midriff portion and the skirt, and put them together. Then, before you finish the seams, you put in your zipper. After that, you complete your trims and hem treatments.

Unlike a JSK bodice, you'll need interfacing to make the waist portion of the skirt stiff. You also may want to insert boning, depending on how much structure you want it to have and how experienced you are.

The fabric itself seems fine, since it's abstracted and not strictly a geometric print, just be careful when cutting out and putting together your pieces so that you don't have the directions mis-matching between the midriff and the skirt.

If you're concerned about how it would look all over, though, I recommend drawing a sketch of the skirt, then putting the pattern in it using Photoshop, MS paint, or even a photocopier. Then you can color the straps solid black, or leave them patterned, and see which you like better.

So a tutorial for a high-waist skirt does exist. I made one a while back, but this probably would have made it easier; after a couple stubborn attempts at it, it came out looking half decent. Invisible zippers still give me trouble, though; does anyone know what to do with that flimsy little piece of the zipper at the top that doesn't have zipper on it? Does it get sewn on to the garment as well? Even then, my skirt still splits unattractively at the top where there's nothing holding it together.

The instructions on the zippers I have always say to fold it back [about in half] before you pin it in and sew the zip, for support. You're also supposed to attach a hook and eye closer above the zipper on the inside, so that it'll stay shut. Take a look at any dresses you have, and most commercially made skirts, to see what I'm talking about. :3

Thank you! I'll definitely be looking into those tutorials.

Another question--I've been looking at a JSK I just made and am a little frustrated with the bottom shape of the skirt. The bottom hem goes straight across, while in other brand JSKs there's more of a curve, like a swoop (like the hem of this Baby the Stars Shine Bright dress). Any idea why there's the difference in the shape? Here's a picture of my JSK to see what I'mt talking about.

When linking to a dress from the Baby website, you need to right click and say "show this frame only", then copy and paste the URL. I'm familiar with the swoop shape you're describing, however. It's because of the mannequin and the way that the petticoats are put under the skirt. They're arranged to sweep sideways, in order to maximize the amount of skirt shown in the photographs. When worn, more often than not, the JSKs have straight-across hems, because petticoats shift around when on a moving human body.

There's nothing at all wrong with your JSK's hem. (:

Oh, thank you! I was thinking I was doing something wrong for a while. And thanks for that tidbit on linking to the Baby website. I'll keep that in mind next time.

Alright. One or two hooks and eyes came to mind, but the skirt is rather tight where the zipper ends. I feel a potential hook and eye would bust and fly. >.> Thank you, though; I'll take a look at other clothes with that zipper. ^^
