...so i've noticed a LOT of threads have been closed down lately. some deservedly so, some...not so much. a couple specific threads i noticed were the "advice for-from all" thread and the "guys in the clarinet section" thread. o.O i don't understand how "advice for and from everyone" belongs in the trumpet sticky...this man said that yes, he specifically played trumpet, but he wasn't looking for a trumpet skill. he was asking how to circular breathe(which i will point out ALL musicians can do, even percussionists/pianists/etc... if they wanted to). He also said he could help anyone out with double/triple tonguing...(which i will firmly state that woodwinds, as well as brass can do. i know, i've done it and was required to do so for a few songs i had to play during the school year..and i play clarinet and sax). he was inviting all people to give or ask for ANY general or specific advice. not just trumpets.

the "guys in the clarinet" thread...i'm not sure the closer of this thread really read the entire thing to fully understand what was being said in there. yes, it could have been closed do to the "clarinet" specificness, but i feel i must clear the air, so to speak. the post mentioned that we shouldn't "segregate genders" when no one was doing that at all. in fact, it was just the opposite. that thread was put there by the author to make known his dislike at gender selected instruments. he thought it shouldn't matter if you were a girl or boy. the rest of the discussion following was mostly logical response to this.

can i get any clarification on why suddenly so many threads are being closed? as opposed to how many were being closed in the recent past.

Well being a mod, I'll put in my two cents. BNG is a very large guild, with 23,072 members and 210,733 posts. I understand we don't get 23,000 people on a day, but there are a significant amount of people that come through on a daily basis. What it comes down to is that is if no threads were locked we would have a multitude of "little" threads with some 1 or 2 pages. The bigger picture is to create an array of discussion threads with as much difference between them as possible. Such as if we kept the "male clarinet" thread, technically that would allow a "male flute" thread too. Or a "female trombone" thread (though they could be found inactive somewhere in the guild, I'm sure.) It's much better to have a "People in a dominantly opposite gender section" thread. It clears more space for other threads covering other aspects of the infinite world of music and band. To the space issue, someone might say, "What about more sub-forums?" The problem with sub-forums, the more you have, the less people that visit them. People tend to post in the more popular subforums like the "Brass/ Woodwind" as opposed to "Media". The average person (not to say I speak for all) wants to cruise the guild, looking for new threads and posts. They don't want to spend two hours looking through 5 pages in 10 sub-forums. People gravitate towards the first page on the main sub-forums. They must be kept diversified and clean for this purpose.
And to be honestly blunt, there should be more locked threads, not less.

thank you for a logical explanation, i really appreciate it. a lot of what you said makes sense, but at the same time, that same logic is kind of working against you. now you have many locked threads on the very first page, which is what most people look at. they don't really have their own queries that they need to make a whole new thread, but there is nothing for them to post on if they have any knowledge that could be pertinent. another solution could be(if this is possible, i have no knowledge of what mods can and can't do to alter threads) change the thread title to something more all encompassing. that way, the threads aren't locked so people can still post and communicate and at the same time you're getting rid of the specifics. or, again if possible, you could delete the thread entirely. that would leave space and get rid of a page of locked threads, which is what seems to be happening. it would also show members more relevant threads that are being hidden on pages that they haven't ventured into yet.

The threads are kept so that the creator can see what they did wrong, not just wtf my topic vanished.

And there is already a "People in a dominantly opposite gender section",as [Aelfwyn] put it, thread.

And more threads are being closed because I threatened to deactivate the mods if they weren't active enough razz

As for changing thread titles to make them more all encompassing, we lock threads because such a broader thread exists. Which is why we tell them where to go.

All of this could be solved if people just took the times to read the rules. This used to be a tiny guild, well, in comparison to what it has become. People now just come in and post a topic instead of trying to find where their post should go.

The stickies in this subforum are for socialization and advice purposes, you don't need to make a new topic each time you have a new question.

that would explain the sudden activity, thanks. also thank you for fully explain the reason they are being locked instead of closed. although i know it is against the rules to "re-make" a thread that already exists, sometimes it takes a very long time to find that thread. some people, myself included, don't spend that kind of time searching through all the pages of what has now become irrelevant information in the hopes that they MIGHT find what they were looking for. sometimes people need a quick fix. some people are posting just because they think it's unlikely that someone has answered specifically what they need answered, with some topics..this makes it easier to continue discussion, in older topics that have disappeared from misuse it might be hard to continue where everyone left off, in which case you would need to start the conversation over with a new question anyway.

a suggestion for letting people know what they did wrong with their threads could be making a "recently closed threads" sticky or announcement on the main forum. this way people could check here to see if their vanished thread has been deleted. you could also give a 2-3 word reason as to why the thread was closed. this is optional, of course, if you want to take the extra time and effort.

I can understand the thing with repeat threads, so I think we (I, at least) have been letting some slide...locking a thread that has existed before, but not recently been active, would just be a bad idea, if we didn't at least bump it up or something. I guess the problem is that while some of those aren't meant just for one specific instrument, a lot of people make a title dealing with their instrument, leading us to believe that they could just as easily discuss that in their instrument's sticky.

I'm not sure about the sticky/announcement thing, since it's not really my decision, but when we lock threads, we usually put the reason why they were locked...if the person knows where they posted it, then they probably will be able to find it, since it takes awhile for them to fall off the first page.

yeah, i've noticed that you guys post the reason it was locked. that suggestion was purely circumstantial, assuming you followed the first suggestion of deleting, instead of locking. that way people would still know why their thread was shut down, but there wouldn't be an excess of unusable threads sitting on the front page.

I am sure the directory of threads needs to be updated, that was first made when I was a mod, and that was like 3 years ago Oo.
