Suffocate your own empire...

Most people go into pit freshmen year. But I went to get enrolled into my new school and had to tryout for the percussion teacher. I did a few things here and there and bam. He told me I was either going on quads or bass.

I can't do left hand diddles to save my life. Going from a sucky concert band into marching on battery kind of scares me. I was sent 10 pages of music to practice before the 27th. 2 weeks to learn them. Most of them have to do with left hand diddles and triplets. I can do triplets and sextuplets. Thats not hard for me. Its just diddles. But still. Is it good that I'm going into battery fish year?

Battery does help improve your coordination and it will help your skills for pit, too.

It's all co-existent. Pit helps for concert band playing, drumline helps improve rudimentary stuff.

We have plenty of fish who are on drumline. We also have tons in pit. It just depends on what you make that year.
(You're the only other person I've seen who calls freshmen 'fish' omg)

Also: maybe focus on your left diddles for a while?
It's like the teacher at my summer camp said: 'Focus on your worst so it becomes better than your best.'
Good luck learning all of that in a two-week space. o_o

(I myself have never left the pit. I'm going to be section leader for the second year running, and hopefully it'll go as good for me this year and next year as it did for my SL when I was a fish.)

Can I put that in my sig???

Well I have camp in 2 weeks. So hopefully he will work with me then.

I can probably get help after camp. But before that. I can't get help

Go right ahead, everything from that band camp was meant to be shared with everyone. biggrin

Yeah, ask for help during camp/after camp/etc.
And before that, just do as much as you can on your own so there's less for him to have to help you with.

Hey, don't worry about it.
I was thrown on tenor (quad) my freshman year, and it was fricken scary.
But Drumline isn't something to be afraid of. It's not any better or worse than being in pit.
I personally always wanted to be in pit, but I'm not good enough at Mallets yet.

And about left hand diddles. Practice a double beat excersize and play it as doublestops. With both hands, at the same time that is. Your right hand will teach your left hand, and it will make it a lot easier. Make sure they are playing at the same hight, and start at like 100 bpm and work your way up. Start by using mostly wrist muscles, and then as you get faster, use more fingers. AND USE A MET!!

If you get put on Bass, you may stay there for the rest of High School. A lot of people do. I've played it for pep, just for fun, and it's really comfortable. No where near as heavy as a tenor. Just make sure you get put on first or third. They're easiest.
Also, if you get tenor, make sure to have good padding on your harness. They can hurt like a b***h sometimes. It depends on the type of drums your school has.

Yamahas are pretty light, depending on the type, and how old the drum is
Pearls are my personal favorite. Not too heavy, and the T-neck harnesses adjust in EVERY WAY POSSIBLE, so it's even comfortable for girls like me.
Premier Drums are POS drums, in my opinion. I dislike them. They don't sound good. Ewwwww.
and you should pray to god that you don't have Dynasty drums. They're SUPER NICE, and they sound good, but they're FRICKEN HEAVY. They have way too much extra metal. Even baby bass is like, rediculous. Their SNARES are fricken heavy too.

But either way, don't sweat it. If you want some things to practice that will make you better, you can PM me, and I'll send them to you.

If he stuck you on the line then you must be better than the average freshie =]

And if you're worried about playing, then practice, practice, practice ^-^
And I must admit, the first year of competitions seems scary, but it actually becomes quite enjoyable =]
The adrenaline makes it worthwhile!

Mst things you get before camp are just for you to get familiar with, you don't have to have them memorized.

10 pages? Jesus man, and as a freshman. That's impressive. I wish I showed what I can do on quads before I entered high school. Then winter drumline I finally did. Now, I have a big chance as a sophomore for marching season.

Anyway, an exercise is doing diddles on both hands, then stop playing with your right. Not only can it help with left diddles, it can help keeping on the upbeat.

To step it up, do them as scrapes.

Still that's great, freshies on the line. There's hope for the future.

This is what my instructor had us do. Start doing a roll (RRLLRRLLRRLL....) Do this for as long as it takes, took me about 2hours. Just keep doing the rolls to a metronome. It'll start to really even up.

The second way is starting insanely slow doing a roll, slow to the point where each individual hit sounds like a quarter note, then slowly speed it up. Try to accent the second hit of each hand. The slower the tempo the more wrist, the faster the tempo gets the more fingers you use. You'll be able to feel the diddles and feel the difference in motion you will use.

And, I was a freshman last year, I got put on bass drum, Our parts were insane. Some friendly advice though. Getting kinda mad, will make your playing intense. And, In my case, makes it cleaner. I suck at playing when I'm in a good mood. When I'm mad, in the words of my instructors, both performed in DCI, DCA, and WGI, "You played like Ralph Hardimon and Scott Johnson put together, on crack though."

Don't worry. I know how you feel.

I'm a freshman this year, and marching in battery scared me. Frankly, I prefer battery over pit. Mostly because I couldn't play pit to save my life. Out of the battery (counting me) there were 3 freshmen. I was going for snare, and I realized I could do a lot of the things the snares could. I told my director, and he put me on bass. Best decision I ever made. xD

Battery is fun, don't worry. And diddles are hard, I know. The left hand gets me too. Basically do what ducksoup4pa said to do. I've done that and it works.

I lead the pit ensemble. Pit is freakin' awesome. Battery kinda sucked until we actually got to battle.
