Yeah the reason I'm asking is because well maybe the music industry should take the hint and keep up with technology. Make online stores, well-known not ones you have to search for ages, in which people can buy music online, search databases and choose what songs they want to buy or not. It obviously can be done so WHY is no one doing it? By not doing it music companies are losing money. To be fair, a lot of people I know who download music do it because they don't want the whole album and have nowhere to buy the song online. I am not saying its RIGHT, what I am saying is that maybe the music industry needs to step up.

Kinda like what the game companies did at first oppertunity and are trying to do left and right?
cus you can buy games everywhere online these days allowing for avoidance of the in store package deals of 3 games when you already have 2.

xd Yeah kind of like that. The music industry can't AFFORD to stay in the past. Their market has changed and they can't ignore that. To ignore that would cost them greatly. This is partly why I think the Youtube thing is stupid, not because I think its unfair, not because I think pirating isn't a big deal but because it shows how the music industry isn't moving forward.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It may be their legal right but I still agree that they are actually knocking back a lot of good free advertising. There are a lot of music artists that I never would discovered if it weren't for YouTube. Vienna Teng, for example, is someone who's music I never would have come across by watching Video Hits or Rage (Australian music video shows), by browsing in the music store, or by listening to Australian radio. She's one of my favourite artists and I stumbled on to her music when I watched an amv featuring one of her songs.

People can rip music from YouTube put it's not a feature that YouTube itself offers so wouldn't it be a better idea to target the people who provide the means to rip from YT instead? Maybe they cannot be bothered because it's too much effort... Besides YT doesn't exactly offer the best quality. Someone who is really keen on something isn't going to download each song from a band one by one from YT, they'll go somewhere that will allow them to download whole albums in a just a few clicks.

Also, it's not like the people posting the videos are making any profit from it. You can became a YT partner and earn money from your videos but all the content you post must either be yours or you have permission to use said content and even then YT might remove it. stressed

Mind, from the article linked to from the OP video, it sounds like it has more to do with them thinking that they weren't getting paid enough money to allow their music to be on YT and YT not wanting to negotiate than actually being about copyright violation and the ensuing loss.
I am totally with you, Terra. The only reason I found and fell in love with Within Temptation was because of YouTube. Without the AMV I first heard them on, I would likely still be ignorant of their existence.

I love Within Temptation! heart

Again, I came across Within Temptations music, and Lacuna Coil too, on Last.fm, another site from which WMG has pulled it's music.

Oh, and in case people are wondering and would like clarification, I do go on to buy the albums, singles, and dvds of these artists that I find online.

I have afew commetns to make. I make a few AMVs and other music videos from TV Shows and stuff, and it really annoys me that I can't put them on youtube because of the copyright, but hey, I didn't really create any of it, I just broke about 5 laws making that music video and am trying to break more by attempting to post it. Laws include ripping the dvd and music, editing, reproducing all of which are illegal to do so. Remember those big old warning screens at the start of DVDs?

As for the "Free advertising" defense, how is it free advertising? I'm able to listen to the song/watch the video for free as mushc as I want if its on youtube. ie, the owner gets nothing. If it were on the owners account, it'd get paid for by adds and most likely hae links to merch and stuff in the description. While I do agree with the removal of music from the actualy artists on page, I'm yet to see that (but not saying it hasn't happened). As for what Terra mentioned about docovering artists, tis the same for me, but unfortunately thats jsut tough. If the owner doesn't want THEIR music and videos being used by unathorised people than thats tough luck for us.

I believe the point of youTube is to create your own videos/music. While making AMVs and stuff is creative you aren't really creating anything, you're jsut doing some editing. You wouldn't even be able to do that editing if someone hadn't already created your source material.

The argument about pirated stuff actually helps the industry is BS in my opinion. If I download a movie and I watch it then (apart from breaking the law) that is a DVD/Movie Ticket not paid for. The same with music. Although usually if I really like the music ive downloaded, I buy the CDs anyway XD but if i end up not liking it i dont bother, but even if I do go buy the msuic, not everyone does that, becasue tehy already have it >.<

In conclusion, if you want your videos on youtube to stay unrestricted, don't steal other peoples material. You don't own it, therefore have no right to whinge when it gets removed. And don't worry I have to tell myself that too sometiems. All my music videos ive created have been banned from youtube. And that annoys me, but thats they way life is.

The thing is that youtube videos are hideously low quality. You're essentially listening to a sample of the song. If anyone is happy with the quality of the music, then it's their loss. The fact is that CDs are far higher quality than MP3s are, even at the max bitrate of 320kbps.

I've found a lot of bands that I wouldn't have done if their music wasn't on youtube, and I've bought all of the CDs by them that I can afford. The whole "Oh it makes them loose moneyz!1!1!!11" argument is bullshit.

@"Free advertising" Yes. Yes it is, because it means that they don't have to pay to advertise their stuff. Therefore FREE ADVERTISING.

But when you post someones song you aren't advertising it. you are using the entire song and anyone is free to listen to it, or download it for free as much as they want. Free advertising would be like posting a ten second clip of the soing like on iTunes when you can preveiw a song. That is free advertising. Not making the entire song avaliable for use without anyone having to pay for it.

Just becasue some people discover a band online that they really like and then go and buy their music CDs, it doesn't mean everyoen does that. What about hte people that discover the badn and then just use torrentz to get the music?

>I think this is one of those big horrible complex discussions where everyone has their own opinion therefore, since I have clearly stated mine, shall retreat to lurking only.

just because a commercial runs on tv it doesn't mean people will buy the product.

Keep in mind that Warner didn't just yank the audio from user-made videos, it yanked the official videos for many (if not all) of their artists. For some artists on that label, that was the only promotion they were getting. =/

It should be up to the artist, but it isn't.
