thing is after just a few months of studying Japanese I was already in intermediate level. And it was the time when there were no tutorials on the net yet so I had to go to the library to read books.. (2003) Then I took the JLPT3 the same year without taking JLPT4 first
I guess how long it takes to learn depends on your passion in the language.
