Okay, so here's the deal. I started marching band last year in my freshman year, it's like from the first moment Justin saw me he hated me. He was always an a*****e to me, we were in pit together and he made it hell. He was a sophmore and he tried out for bass last year and didn't make it, he was a bit bitter about it. Well, last month I decided I would try to make bass because I had wanted to play it since I was little (my dad was a drummer too, so I guess it's in my blood). Well I worked my a** off and practiced an hour or more everyday, well so did Justin but he just didn't have the talent. I tried helping him out becuase I know he really wanted it, and in the past few months we had become pretty close friends. Well, I made bass, he didn't. He keeps texting me saying "You don't deserve it" "You know you're going to mess up" "you suck" and a lot more. I don't feel bad that I made it, I feel bad that he didn't. He wanted it so much too. I wanted it more than anything, and I stayed after school with my friends in percussion and we practiced together, for at least 3 hours every Monday and Tuesday, then I'd go home and practice too. I love the bass drum, I'm still working my a** off but it sucks that I lost a close friend because of it. Should I feel bad? What should I do?

Don't feel bad, the better person has it.

Use his "you sucks" as motivation? That's what I always did xp

Yeah, I don't suck, I know I don't. I wouldn't have gotten the spot if I sucked. I could tell he was struggling, and I tried helping but I guess there was nothing I could do. Just sucks I lost a good friend

I'm not saying you suck; In Wind Ensemble there's this kid that I was really good friends with, we were on the Drumline together.. and he tells me I suck when I really don't. He's really good at playing the snare, but that's all he can really play when I can play everything fairly well in percussion..

He also might be jealous if you made it and he didn't. razz

just continue to help him out and if he refuses ur help, thats his problem. my first two years in percussion sucked. everyone was a total jerk except for maybe like 2 or 3 people each year out of the total like 10-15.

this year was just horrible tho, in marching season. all the good people had graduated except for the people in pit. everyone on the line were total jerks except for two of my fellow bass players (jesus and andrew, yes we pronounce it jee-zus even tho its hey-sus) finally, about 3 quarters of the way into the season, all of them jsut walked off the field in the middle of practice, so our drumline the rest of marching season consisted of 3 bass drums and the pit.

but then winter came, we got all new people on the line (same fun people in pit and andrew stayed on the line) and we rocked winter percussion. We never got first but we stayed consistantly between 2nd and 4th, where as my freshman and sophmore we got last place every show. last place usually being between 6th and 8th lol

wat a career in the high school drumline, eh? lol but im optimistic about the coming year. My senior year and we'll have a fresh new crew of percussionists to train up with the RIGHT attitudes! = D

Our percussion is LEGENDARY. No joke. Lol. We were practicing before a competition and we saw the people watching us crying. Best around. Yeah, all of the people in the drumline are cocky assholes here too, but something that's undeniable is they have madd skills. I think cocki-ness just comes with the whole package

When anyone says 'You suck' to me, I reply with a simple yet effective line:

"So do you."

It works for just about anything lol.

But seriously...tell him that if he's so pissed about this, he should just practice more and maybe he'll make it next year. There's a reason you're there and he's not, if your section is as good as you say it is.

(Also: this is off-topic, but I personally love marching cymbals although THEY GET HEAVY BEYOND BELIEF OMG x_x )
