There are many books on the different mythology from cultures around the world. They tell the myths of ancient societies and what these cultures believed. Stories about gods controlling the weather or about fairies ruling the underworld. I personally really love Celtic mythology though India mythology is also pretty neat.

Whats your favorite mythology? Do you like a specific book on mythology? Favorite mythological story?

Camelot legends are probably my favourite. heart

I like Celtic ones too, especially about the sidhe and Tír na nÓg.

Greek ones are really great! I actually named my car Persephone! xd

Yay! I also adore Celtic mythology, and since I've noticed quite a few other people here do as well, I wanted to recommend the Ulster Cycle to anyone who perhaps is unfamiliar with it. It's kind of like the Arthurian Legends but better in my humble opinion. I like the Arthurian Legends as well, but something new is always nice!

The character Deirdre is portrayed rather unfavorably, but she's still my favorite because a number of authors took it upon themselves to write incredible novels about her. If I could remember one in particular that was a notch above the rest I'd recommend it. It was a gripping tale.

I agree that Indian Legends are incredible! Vishnu is one of the most interesting 'gods' I've really ever stumbled across in mythology. Where Greek and Roman gods were really quite indifferent to humanity, Vishnu was entranced by humans and tried on countless occasions to aid our cause. He rocks! Plus he has blue skin, that's just freaking cool! Interestingly enough he also has 3 forms which parallels a younger and more familiar religion that most of us are intimately acquainted with. wink

Oddly enough I've become really interested in Native American mythology as of late. Sadly I have to admit it was sparked by the Twilight novels and all the lore from the Quileute Indians. There is an amazing variety of legends and the things called Wendigo are especially creepy. If anyone knows of any good Native American myths please share!

Ah ha! I found it finally! Got pushed to the back of my bookshelf. Celtic lore lovers out there try this novel if you ever have the time. <3

The Celts: An Epic Novel of Ancient Ireland
by Elona Malterre

Not a very original title, but it's all about Deirdre and her life from start to finishing. I hope you like it. I don't see how anyone couldn't but you never know.

Obviously it's an author's interpretation of Deirdre's role in the Ulster Cycle but I did some research after finishing the novel and the more.. outrageous Celtic practices were genuine. Which shocked me. -.-

You can get it used from amazon.com for 1 cent USD or visit the local library. smile

I've been reading this book lately called Don't Know Much About Mythology by Kenneth Davis. Its really good and tells about the myths of various cultures worldwide.

Cricket, the only Native American legend I know of is the Cherokee Rose. The flower is said to be a result of the Trail of Tears. Mothers in the tribe cried, and where their tears fell a flower grew. It has a golden centre to show why Cherokees were forced to leave home There are seven leaves on each stem, one for each of the seven Cherokee clans that went on the Trail. Today, the Cherokee Rose is the official state flower of Georgia, and the rose still grows on the route of the Trail the Cherokee walked.

Greek and Roman mythology is my obsession. But I also like celtic mythology, which was brought on by The Alchymyst and The Magician.

I've been having fun with Chinese mythology lately - dragons and turtles and sages, oh my! I keep meaning to read the Ulster Cycle, but I haven't yet. I also need to read more about King Arthur instead of just letting my husband tell his favorite two stories over and over and over again. And anyone who's a fan of African mythology should probably first of all read Just-So Stories by Kipling, and also read Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman. I had a *blast* with those.

Anyone who's a general fanatic about mythologies of all sorts should probably read American Gods by Neil Gaiman, since it's fun to tease out as many of the references as you can, but be warned that it's definitely not for kids.

My favorite mythology is deffinetly Greek. I loved it since 3rd grade, when I was first introduced to it. Athena is my favorite goddess; I have a owl pendant, gray contacts, and more owl items.

I love Greek, Egyptian, and Roman mythology the most. All three are similar in many aspects, yet have their own distinctive differences.

For fans of lore from the British Isles, I strongly recommend Irish Fairy and Folk Tales by W.B. Yeats (yes, the very same). He was a great devotee of the Good Neighbors and similar creatures, and I've never yet read a better compendium.
