Author's Note:

Ok, so I wrote two summers ago in like five days. Yes, I know it goes kind of fast. Yes, something don't make sense. Yes, I'll probably fix them later after I've finished a bunch of other projects I'm working on. What you guys can do for me is to give me specific areas where the confusion starts and ends and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks!

The Vampire and the Werewolf

On cold nights, much like this, creatures of the night prowl about looking for prey. On one side of the forest, lay a waiting vampire. She is alert and cautious as she moves silently deeper into the forest. On the other side lay a patient werewolf. He sniffs the air; every couple of seconds, pausing at the soft rustles. His ear twitches as he hears a soft “thudding” on the wet ground nearby. He turns in pursuit, chasing the prey; his only objection now. The Vampire heard the soft thuds, and louder ones following it. She runs toward the sound, hoping she gets lucky tonight. Her exceptional speed heightening to a exhilarating level. She is fast, her eyes never looking in a different direction. She is as graceful as a gazelle when she runs. Little does she know that her mortal enemy, the werewolf, is following her “prey.” She sniffs the air once, and her face easily becomes full of disgust and hatred. She is tempted to leave this prey to the Lycan, but she heard something following her.

The Werewolf could smell the vampire, and she was close. The soft thuds distant now, as he targeted the vampire. He felt like taking a risk tonight. The Elder wouldn’t approve of this. He knew that the worse thing you could do was confront a vampire in a Lycan form, especially if you or the other were hungry. He raced on and saw an opening to a meadow coming up. The Vampire loved running, but now, she needed to get away. The clan leader would be angry if she killed a werewolf. Both of these graceful and fierce creatures knew that neither should meet each other in their state. The Vampire leaped through the opening into the meadow.

The moon shined down on her as she turned to confront her enemy. The Werewolf slowed to a stop upon reaching the opening as he saw his enemy turn around, waiting for him. He walked out into the moonlight, wondering what she was planning.
“Vampire! Why are you on our land?” He asked in a loud, booming voice. He tried to seem frightening and dangerous. He hoped she wouldn’t attack if he did so.

“Calm down, puppy. I mean no harm.” She spread out her arms in peace. “I am only here because my clan is here.” She dropped her hands to her sides and relaxed her shoulders.

The Werewolf seemed unconvinced. “Your clan lives on the other side of the mountain pass. Why are you here in the forest?” His loud, booming voice echoed through the forest.

The Vampire looked confused at this. She shook her head and smiled. “You misunderstand. I did not explain myself. My clan is not on the other side of the mountain pass. My clan is north of the forest. We are a nomadic clan. I shall act as a spokesperson for our clan. We are a peaceful clan who do not believe in the other ways of our kind. That is why we are nomadic. If you wish for us to leave early, we shall. There are always other forests with animals inside.” She took a step forward and watched him silently.

The Werewolf thought about this for a moment. Contemplating whether or not, the Vampire clan would interfere with anything. “How long would you be staying?” He asked, more out of curiosity that for informational purposes.

The Vampire thought about his question for a short while before sighing. “I am unsure. I will have to ask the clan leader. Meet me here tomorrow night when the moon is high over the ground.”

The Werewolf nodded in reply and turned to walk away. The Vampire did the same but the Werewolf hesitated. He turned back to her and cleared his throat. “What is your name, if I may ask?”

The Vampire turned at the sound of his booming voice and looked at him curiously. “My name, you ask?” She looked thoughtful as she considered the consequences of telling her name to him. “Will I gain a name in return?” She asked. She knew she couldn’t be sure of anything he could lie about his name. Yet, she was prepared and sure he wouldn’t.

The Werewolf looked back at her skeptically. “Would you like my human name or my Lycan name?” He asked in a calm tone.
The Vampire raised her eyebrows with interest. “Which ever you prefer, I presume.”

The Werewolf thought to himself, wondering should trust her or not. He hesitated, but took another risk. “James.” He grimaced at his decision, he hoped she wouldn’t betray him, but all he could do was that. Hope.

The Vampire looked at James with caution. It was a common name among humans. She knew hers wasn’t. It was foreign to where they were. “My name is Amelia.” She took a deep breath. She was waiting for a sarcastic or rude remark about her name, but James surprised her again by saying a complement.

“That’s a beautiful name. Foreign, but the way it flows so smoothly from your lips, makes it sound like… like a song.”

Amelia was taken back at his comment. He caught her off guard with the nice statement. “Thank you…” She paused for a moment before finishing her reply. “James.” They both seemed to agree silently that it was acceptable to leave.

James returned to the caves where his clan waiting for food, from the raiding party set for tonight. The young ones ran up to him, sniffing his hands for the delicious smell of blood. They were hungry. The mothers called them back over once they had sniffed the air once. James stood quietly as the children retreated to their mothers. He walked towards the back of the cave and rapped on the wall twice. A quietly, stern ‘come in’ echoed to James’s sensitive ears. He walked in slowly to see a man sitting cross-legged on some animal skins of previous kills. James reverted to his human form and knelt down on one knee.

“Elder, I have news of newcomers.”

The man opened his eyes slowly and put his fingertips together. “Go on.” His voice was raspy and wheezy. His hair was receding slightly and his beard, white.

“There is a new clan of vampires…” he said slowly, looking up at the old man. “I have spoken with one of its members briefly. They are a nomadic clan. Tomorrow she and I will meet again to find out when they are to leave.” He paused as he looked down in shame. “I’m sorry, Elder, tonight while I was hunting, I smelled her. I wanted to confront her, even thought I was hungry. Please forgive me for my selfishness.”

The old man sat in silence as his pupil begged him for forgiveness. “Stand, my son.” He spoke softly. As James stood, the man took a deep breath. “What you did tonight forgives the thoughts you thought. Actions speak louder than words. How you act defines how loud they speak.” The Elder Werewolf closed his eyes again and James knew he was done. He turned away from the Elder and slowly walked out.

Amelia returned to the other forest where her clan was camping for the night. She walked into the biggest red tent, in the center of camp. She pulled open the flaps and walked in looking confident. She stopped ten feet before the inner room. She knocked on the wooden pole and coughed politely. Noises coming from inside sounded quiet. Amelia could hear voices. She waited patiently outside of the inner room before she heard a quiet voice call from within.

“Come in.” Amelia pushed past the inner flaps and took in the scene as indifferent as possible. Her leader was surrounded by live animals fresh from the forest as well as five seductive women from the neighboring clan on the other side of the mountain pass.

“Ah! Amelia!” The leader that was surrounded by the females beckoned her to come closer. “How lovely it is to see you. I was wondering what happened when you didn’t come back from the hunt an hour ago.”

Amelia nodded to show respect to her leader. “I have urgent news to speak with you about.” She glanced at the other women who gave her some all-that looks. The man raised his eyebrows at her in interest.

“Ladies, you know the way out. Go mingle. I’ll find you soon.” He stayed put as one-by-one, the women made their way out of the inner room. “What is it, Amelia? What is so urgent?”

Amelia stepped forward a couple of feet before stopping. “Edward, there are werewolves in that forest. They said it’s their territory. I spoke to one of them about our situation. They seem peaceful and mean no harm, but they need to know…” She paused a moment before continuing. “…when we are leaving.” Amelia looked back at Edward. He stared at her with calm eyes.

“What was he doing in the forest at the time?” Amelia hesitated. She wanted to lie about it, but she couldn’t.

“Hunting, I assume…” Edward’s expression became scared. He ran to her side in seconds and began checking her for bruises or cuts. “Edward…” She spoke quietly. She knew he could hear her, but he didn’t reply. He kept checking for something that might be hidden. “Edward…” She spoke louder this time and put her hands on his shoulders. Still, he did not respond. “BROTHER!” She called to him. He snapped out of his trance to stare at her. “Will you please stop?”

Edward stared back at her incredulously. “Stop? STOP?! You encountered a werewolf! A hungry, on-the-hunt beast!” He placed his hands on her shoulders and looked straight into her eyes, “Amelia, you must be more careful. If I lost you—if I lost another sister—I’d die.” Edward turned away from her and walked over to his desk. “I shall speak to the leader of the pack. I am unsure of when we can leave. I shall go with you. When are you meeting him again?”

Amelia looked uncertain, questioning herself if she should tell him. “Tomorrow night.”

Edward turned around and nodded his head. “Very well.” He walked over to her and stood closely. Amelia tensed and looked straight ahead.
She felt his hand lightly caress her cheek. It traveled to her chin. “Go get some sleep. I left a present in your tent.” He turned back to the desk and signaled her to leave. She left gratefully and headed to her tent. She opened the flaps to her own tent and walked slowly to the inner chambers.
Focused on the floor and her shoes, Amelia didn’t notice the dark figure standing in the corner. She went over to her desk and looked some papers. The dark figure was right behind her in a split second. He wrapped his arms around her waist and top half of her body. He whispered in her ear.

“Don’t scream…” The voice was raspy and gruff. The figure turned her around and held her close. “I have missed you.” He whispered in her ear again.

Amelia frightened but going over some self-defensive moves in her head, looked up at him. She pulled her hands free and pushed back the cloak’s hood off the figure. A man stood before her and he looked oddly familiar. She scrutinized his features. “Greg?” She asked, startled.

Greg laughed in a loud voice. “I’m here on your brother’s request. I have your gift.” He pulled out, something small and fury, of his coat. He covered it with his hands and held it out to her. “We found his mother killed and a few miles from him. It looks like her ran for his life from something. Your brother said to give it to you.”

Amelia opened his hands slowly to reveal a small, fury, grey and white, wolf pup. “Why did he want me to have this?” She asked as she took the sleeping pup from his hands.

“I don’t know why, he just said to.” Greg said, shrugging his shoulders. He wiped off his hands on his cloak and looked back at her. She looked back up at him, into his eyes. He leaned down towards her, his hands cupping her face, as he got closer, Amelia began to panic. She wasn’t sure what to do. Greg came closer and closer, his eyes now closed. She felt butterflies in her stomach and they didn’t stop until their lips finally met. The kiss was warm and passionate. Her eyes closed and her panic died down. Greg pulled back and broke the kiss, stepping back as he did so.
Amelia took a deep breath, still in shock from the sudden impulsive kiss. It still tingled on her lips. She looked back at him and took another deep breath. “Did my brother ask you to give me that as well?”

Greg laughed lightly and step back towards her. “No, that was on my own accord.” He lightly caressed her lips with his before disappearing out of the tent.

Amelia fell back onto the bed, still holding onto the wolf pup in her hands. She looked down at him and smiled. “I’ll name you… Calin.” The little wolf pup squirmed in her hand as he dreamt on. Amelia placed the pup on her pillow and lay down next to the pup; falling asleep instantly.

As Amelia and her clan slept for the day, James and his pack leader discussed how this night should go to prevent an outbreak. “Elder, we must keep this secret from the other, for now. They will revolt.” The old man nodded in agreement.

“I agree with you, my son, but what happens when they meet one in the forest? If you are to become the next pack leader, you must know how to handle similar situations as this with your people.”

James grimaced and nodded. “We shall wait to tell the clan until… after I meet with her tonight.” James looked satisfied at his resolution of the circumstances.

“My son, you are forgetting that I will be going with you.” The old man stated. James began to protest, but the old man put up his hand. “My son, I will go with you. That is final. You may go. You must prepare yourself for this encounter.” James hesitated before standing and walking away from him and returned to his bed.

As the sun came down, dusk fell over and engulfed the world in a glow. Amelia stirred slightly I her sleep as she felt something on her nose. She could smell something different in her room, but she couldn’t place it. Something touched her cheek this time and it was wet. Amelia slowly opened her eyes to find another pair of blue and white eyes staring back at her. As for Calin, he was excited to see her, like he would with anything warm. He licked her cheek and barked happily. Amelia was startled by the noise and immediately sat up. “Oh,” she murmured. “It’s you, Calin.” She said stifling a yawn. “You must be hungry…” She looked around the tent and saw a rat. She quickly reached in and killed it. Ripping apart the rat in half, she gave them both to Calin to chew on. Calin eagerly dug into the flesh with his teeth. Amelia crossed the tent and began to change her clothing.

By the time Amelia was ready to leave her tent, it was close to the time when they were supposed to meet James. Amelia and Calin both made their way to the middle tent to retrieve her brother.

Edward was already waiting for them as they approached the tent. “Like the gift?” he asked pointing towards Calin.

Amelia looked down and backed up, smiling and nodding in approval. “His name is Calin.” She replied. “Thank you.”

Edward smiled at her. “You’re welcome.” He glanced over at the forest. “Shall we?” he asked politely but impatiently.

Amelia placed Calin in her big pocket and made sure he was safe. “Yes.” She started to run towards the meeting place. Edward ran beside her, watching her closely. Amelia paid no attention to Edward as she ran gracefully. She began to slow upon the abruptness of the opening. She paused at the opening of the meadow before stepping out into the moonlight. Edward followed behind her with caution. They stood there, waiting for the enemy to arrive.

James and the old man met up with each other at the forest entrance. James felt nervous, being with the pack leader, going to meet the enemy. He still thought his leader should stay behind in case it got ugly. They nodded to each other, and reverted into their werewolf forms, before jumping into the forest. James ran below his normal speed. He was afraid that if he went too fast, he’d loose the pack leader. But, to his surprise, the leader was right beside him, looking at ease.

As they ran, Amelia and Edward could smell the werewolves coming towards them. Edward looked disgusted and covered his nose. “Edward!” Amelia hissed, looking in horror. She slapped his hand down and scolded him. “That is very rude! They wouldn’t appreciate that. You bone head!” Edward looked at her sheepishly, but stopped when he heard something rustle at the entrance. They were standing in front of it at the time, but Edward was cautious.

James and the man stepped out of the darkness in their werewolf forms. It was the pack leader who reverted first. James was hesitant. He looked warily at Edward and looked towards Amelia.

“He’s harmless…” She said. James still wasn’t sure but he reverted back to his human form with hesitation. The pack leader looked delighted.

“Ah, you must be the ‘she’ James was referring to.” He held out his hand towards Amelia. She looked startled by his reaction to her. She shook his hand and smiled, careful not to show her fangs. He turned towards Edward. “And who might you be?” he asked in a curios tone.

“Edward, the clan leader of our little one, I came as help to Amelia.” He looked over at James, keeping his eyes on him. James on the other hand looked at Amelia in question. He was curious to know why she kept her hand in her pocket and tell it “no” quietly.

“Let’s discuss business then.” Suggested the pack leader. He looked back at Amelia and James. “Could both of you stay here while we discuss?”

“Certainly.” Amelia replied immediately. The two leaders walked in one direction, as James walked towards her.

“Amelia, what’s in your pocket?” He didn’t ask in a polite, indifferent tone. He really wanted to know. Amelia looked up at him and gazed into his blue and white eyes. She felt something spark inside of her. She didn’t know what is was, but it felt nice. She actually felt warm. She didn’t hesitate when she pulled Calin out of her pocket. Her pup stayed close to Amelia, cold being out of her warm pocket. “Who is this?” he asked with interest.

“This is Calin. He was found on a hunt expedition last night. My brother let me keep him.” Amelia smiled and absentmindedly pet Calin. James felt oddly compassionate towards Amelia. He shook his head at the thought of what she was. He couldn’t forget that. He couldn’t deny the fact that she was beautiful. Her golden eyes standing out of all the rest of her features. Amelia turned toward the other two men, discussing quietly to each other. James watched her as she turned. She could feel him watching her. She turned back towards him and their eyes locked this time. James couldn’t look away from her smoldering, golden eyes. As if he were a puppet, his body began to lean towards her. His mind didn’t want to, but he couldn’t stop himself. Amelia’s body, on the other hand, was frozen in place. She wouldn’t move from her rotted spot. James kept coming closer and closer, but they didn’t realize what was going on. Soon, James could hear a growl, and it snapped his body out of its impulsive manner. James stepped back from the glaring, over-protective clan leader, Edward.

“Don’t touch my sister…” he growled gutturally. The old man grabbed his shoulder and gave him a firm squeeze.

“Come, James, it’s time to leave.” James turned away, hesitantly and reverted back to his werewolf form. As they walked to the meadow entrance, he looked back at Amelia before her ran out. Edward turned on Amelia and grabbed her wrist in a firm manner.

“What do you think you were doing?” He asked in a malicious tone. Amelia looked frightened at her brother. She didn’t know what to say. Her response earned her a slap across the face. “That’s a werewolf if you haven’t noticed. Our enemy! What do you think you were doing?!” Amelia put her cold hand to her cheek. Her eyes watered slightly as she looked back at Edward.

“I don’t know…” she said quietly. Edward turned away form her and let go of her wrist. Calin sat in her pocket, asleep. He walked away and ran back to camp. Amelia collapsed on the ground and curled up into a ball with Calin in her hands.

James appeared out of the darkness and walked towards her carefully. Tears were streaming down her face. James knelt down by her side and pulled her close to him. Instinct took control and his compassion was immense. Amelia felt numb. Her own brother was ashamed of her and she couldn’t tell him an excuse. She was horrified at what he did, but she knew it could have been worse. After an hour, Amelia felt better, enough to move at least. She stirred in James’s arms slightly and finally removed herself from him. “Amelia…” James started but she pressed her finger to his lips. She stood up and sighed.

“If my brother saw this, I’d be dead.” She turned away from him and crossed her arms. “Nothing happened, okay?” She looked back at him for a moment before running into the forest.

James sat there in a stupor. How he felt about Amelia and what she just said, he knew that it wouldn’t be possible. He stood up and ran into the forest to head for home.

Over the next couple of weeks, Calin had grown too big for her pocket. But he was small enough to be carried. Amelia slept on until darkness fell and Calin knew what that meant… play time. As soon as Amelia woke up, Calin licked her face and played with her long auburn hair. Amelia didn’t mind too much, but for the past five days, she has been miserable. Ever since her encounter with James, she can’t stop thinking about him. His smell, his human features, his compassion, his eyes. She couldn’t get his loving face out of her head. His eyes stood out the most. She could never get past those. She sighed, sulking in her bed. She wanted nothing more than him holding her, but she couldn’t understand why. Calin tugged on her pant leg as he tried to play with her. “Calin, stop it.” She muttered. She didn’t feel like doing anything. She didn’t exist. “Why couldn’t it be different…?”

“What be different?” A gruff voice asked. Amelia turned and saw a dark figure standing at the entrance. The figure stepped into the moonlight, revealing it to be Greg.

“Greg, what are you doing here?” Greg walked towards her and rubbed the back on his hand on the side of her face. Amelia reconciled away form him.

“Your brother requested for me to… uh… help you with anything.” He smiled suggestively. Amelia smiled back hiding her disgust.

“Anything…?” Curiosity in her voice, Amelia looked over at Greg. She walked over to him and placed her hands on his chest.

“Yes…” He breathed into her neck as he began to kiss it. Amelia smiled and prepared herself for what was going to happen next.
Then get out.” Her voice was harsh as she pushed him out of her tent forcefully.

Greg looked confused. “What?” he asked stupidly. He looked at Amelia in his daze.

“Get out.” She said impatiently. Greg just didn’t understand.

“Amelia, I know you like me. You can’t dent it.” He said trapping her into his steel-like grip. He began to walk back into the inner chamber.

“Stop it!” Amelia struggled against his grasp. Her voice almost too loud.

“Stop fighting it, Amelia.” He leaned in closer.

“Stop it!” her voice was a high-pitched shrill. In that moment, someone had pulled Greg off of her and thrown him across in the inner room and into the outer. The figure went after him and kicked him out the door. Amelia could hear grunts outside her tent. It stopped after a minute and Amelia waited in silence. Calin came back inside the tent after getting some breakfast. The other figure stepped into the inner chamber and Amelia gasped.

“Edward!” She rushed towards him and embraced him fiercely. Edward wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head.

“I’m so sorry, Amelia. I thought you liked him. I really did. I just wanted to cheer you up.” He kept apologizing to her until she pulled back.

“Edward, stop. It’s okay.” She stepped back from him and hugged herself. “You didn’t completely miss the target. I think I am in love. Just not someone here…” She trailed off and looked out of the tent. Edward’s frown turned to anger.

“Don’t tell me it’s that werewolf, Jimmy or something.” He said bitterly.

“His name is James, and I think it is. I need to see him…” she started to plan as she went to the desk.

“No! No, no, no, no! I won’t let you.” He said striding towards her and grabbing one of her wrists. “He’s dangerous.” Amelia pulled her wrist away from his hand in protest.

“I can and I will.” She simply said. With that, she ran out of the tent and into the forest.

James sat in one of the inner caves alone. He sat, thinking about Amelia. His mind flashed images in his head. “Why can’t I get her out of my mind?!” he screamed at the walls. He had tried everything. Nothing has worked. His recent attempt was fasting, which made the images appear more often. He had tried admiring one of the single female werewolves, but whenever he saw her, he always thought of Amelia. He was sick and tired of trying to fight it. “I must go see her…” he stated. He stood up and began walking towards the exit of the inner cave when the pack leader appeared in his way. “Sir.” He knelt down on one knee.

“My son, where are you planning to go?” he said, his hands folded behind his back.

“To Amelia, sir. I have tried and tried again to not think about her, but none had worked thus far.” He stood now. “I understand the consequences if I leave for a vampire. But I am willing to accept it and embrace fate.”

The old man nodded. “I see, then I shall not stop you…” he moved from the entrance. James rushed past him and out of the cave. He ran through the night, sniffing the air every minute or so. Then, he caught something… He raced after it and kept on its trail. He ran on until the smell began to grow stronger. He stepped into the open meadow and stopped at the entrance. There she was, lying down in the tall grass. He walked slowly towards her and her eyes opened with a snap.

“You came…” She stood up and looked up at his face. “I must tell you something.” She walked towards him to close the gap between them. She placed her hands on his chest and gazed into his eyes.

“I have something to tell you too.” James smiled as he placed his hands on her waist.

Amelia smiled in delight. “James, I can’t stop thinking about you. You’re constantly in my head, on my mind.” She said this in a rush.

“I feel the same way about you, Amelia.” James said. Amelia gazed into his sparkling eyes and in unison they spoke.

“I love you…”

Amelia laughed as did James. She pulled him down and kissed him. He wrapped his arms around her whole body. The kiss was passionate, but none of them could see what happened next. Two shots could be heard. Amelia fell against James, breaking the kiss. James didn’t know how to react in this moment. He had found his true love and now she was against him, blood trickling down her back.

“Amelia…” he whispered. He sat down and placed her head on his shoulder. “Amelia…” Tears began to rim at his eyes.

“James…” Amelia’s voice was raspy. She coughed and spat out some blood.

“Don’t speak. It’s okay…” He stroked her cheek to soothe her. She reached up and grabbed his hand.

“James, I love you. I love you…” Her voice was only a whisper.

“I love you so much, Amelia. Don’t leave me. I love you.” He felt suffering and grief beyond anything and he couldn’t think about the thought of living without her. The grip of her hand was loosening rapidly.

“I love you, James…” Her voice faded and her eyes closed. Two more shots fired and James felt the bullets penetrate his back. Two more were shot and one hit him in the head. James fell forward, falling next to Amelia, his hand still in hers. A dark figure came out of the shadows, something glinted in his hands. Edward cried silently over his dead sister. He turned around and left the meadow where Amelia and James lay dead.
