Does anyone else here have a steel drums class at their school? Somehow, a few years ago (six or so, I think), our old director managed to procure a set of steel drums. I'm in the class this year because I had a full year open and rather than fill it with math or science I went with steel drums. It's a really fun class. I'm the only one who can read music, though, so I'm stuck on lead pans all year so that I can take the other leads for sectionals, since we get the hardest parts. I'd really like to try out one of the other ones, but I'll live, I guess.
So yeah. Has anyone else been lucky enough to play the steel drums?

I saw a performance by the TCU drumline and they had this really fancy new set of steel drums. They were really good. I went up and tried to play a scale on one and had no luck at 'tall. It's too unorganized for me...

You have to be able to read music, but I suppose it would take a lot of adjusting because the notes are all mixed up on the head. Observe.

It's not THAT hard. It is at the very beginning of a new song, but once you get the movements down and memorize the song it's REALLY easy. And no, you don't have to be able to read music. At least, not the way my BD teaches it. She just writes the note names above the notes and teaches it that way. And it works, apparently, because we've learned like four and a half songs in two months, which is GOOD for a class where only one person reads music. Our BD is taking us out to lunch after our winter concert. XD

If I go to the college I'm planning on going to (TCU) I'll probably get to play steel drums. Since I'm obsessed with order and stuff that'll probably throw me for a loop. But I'll get used to it.

I love steel drums but I hate steel drum instructors. My freshmen year one of the judeges at one of our competitions gave the drumline a 2. sad How lame was that? We were 1's all the way! wink
