Who has read the Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud? The books in the series are: The Amulet of Samarkand The Golem's Eye Ptolemy's Gate
In this series, the British governent is run by magicians. They have no powers of their own; they simply summon up demons to do their bidding. The demons, not liking beng enslaved, kill the magicians in order to escape servitude if they can.
Bartimaeus is a djinni (middle-ranking demon) that gets summoned by Nathaniel, an ambitious 12 year-old bent on revenge. Bartimaeus' arrogance and sarcastic wit kept me laughing throughout the series! biggrin As the series progresses, Nathaniel gets older and he and Bartimaeus get mixed up with some Commoners trying to overthrow the oppressive government of magicians.
My absolute favourite trait about these books is that neither of the heroes (Bartimaeus and Nathaniel) are particularly heroic. They're self-serving, insensitive, and egotistical...I love 'em! xd

If Minerva herself suggests them to me, I shall read them. She has good taste in books. (i.e. Arty the super genius.)

I read at least 2 of them a while ago. I remember the plot and everything, but they weren't that memorable. I kind of forgot about them, but I remember liking them.

Not memorable? eek
Well, I actually don't like the second one very much. The first is amazing, though; it's the funniest of the three with one of the greatest opening-chapters to a book that I've ever read! exclaim Ptolemy's idealism in the third one is remarkable. heart

Yes, if you skip the footnotes you definitely miss out on a great deal of the humour! lol
