i feel a rant coming on so please bear with me.
about two hours ago i was laid off from my job where i was faithfully employed for the past two years. it seems the faltering economy has lessened the need for the product i made within the company. 6 others were sent out the doors with me today. it's just unfortunate that i've been laid off during the most difficult time to find employment anywhere save fast food and the likes of minimum wage positions. however, those types of jobs only offer part time positions, no benefits whatsoever, and an all-around drop in personal morale. i've been having a difficult time managing my bills with my $10/hr wage. now it's gonna be pretty much impossible on a mere $7.25/hr. it seems i'll have to find multiple part times and end up working 75+ hours a week just to make up what i was making at one job. i can understand that with the lack of work, the company has to lay people off in order to keep the bulk employed, but why put an ad in the paper and on different employment sites advertising employment opportunities in different positions than the one i was in? if they can afford to hire people, then why lay others off? in my opinion, i feel that's lousy management. so, as a result, i'm now pretty much unemployed for the first time in the better part of 6 years. hopefully it's possible to teach an old dog new tricks.
now, discuss:
the impact of a recessive economy on your personal life
the difficulties of finding substancial employment during a recession
your own experiences of being laid off/terminated/displaced
how screwed super buick is if he doesn't come up with his rent or auto insurance

That's a tough break, man. I hope you and your family manage to make it through everything okay. Did you get any kind of severence or anything like that?
As for ol' HH....
My hours have been cut at my back drastically in the past few months (I have one freaking day next week!), but I manage to maintain nonetheless. I am going to try and find another job in the next few weeks after school is over because I could stand to use the extra cash just so I can do some of the things I want.
I've never been terminated or laid off from a job, per se (I've only had two in my 23 years) but I was basically forced out of my old job a little over a year ago when this new store manager told me the only way I was going to get hours was to work in a part of the store he knew I didn't like working in, so I up and quit about two days later rather than deal with his BS anymore. It may sound stupid, and it probably is, but my pride won't let me work somewhere where I'm always miserable even if I do need the money.

I live in Vegas, and I see people's hours and jobs starting to be cut. That being said, if this is now happening out here, I can only imagine how bad things must be outside of the city.
First of all, my condolences. I hope you can find a way to make it through while retaining your conscience and sanity.
I've only been laid off twice, but the first one was the most memorable because I was 20 and working in a law office as a male receptionist. They told me that they were cutting costs, and that they were eliminating my position and combining it with another. It was the first time I had ever heard of a severance package, and what I received was pretty substantial. However, 2 weeks later the firm went completely defunct. Like hardcore chapter 11 style.
Things will be bad for everyone for a while. The only suggestion I can give to anyone is find somewhere with the lowest cost of living you can find and try to make it work there. Yeah, I know running away is bad advice, but what good is standing your ground when everything around you is falling apart?

I've never truly been laid off. But I worked at Steak Out for all of three weeks when the shop I worked at closed down-- the manager offered me to work at the other store but I didn't have reliable transport- especially not for a minimum wage food job (though I did have fun working there!).
I'm pretty sure a few years back the whole lost para professional job was due to a budget cut- but it was covered up by a harsh review that attempted to legitimize the position elimination. In that instance I would have vastly appreciated honesty from the school district that "we're eliminating the position" rather than a review that was so incredibly negative (and unprofessional) that I not only doubted my ability to work with kids, I had decided I would never have any because I'd be a horrible mother.
I felt the pain of the recession when I first moved. As I mentioned on here, I struggled for months to find a job. Now I have two part time jobs- and I'm pretty miserable at the lack of stability. To me unemployment is maddening- you want to WORK to earn your keep. Lay offs only hinder the economy more because without the generation of income for citizens spending drops across the board. Retail should never, ever try to cut down on employee pay (via lay offs, pay decreases, or drastic hour cutting) because retail is deeply embedded in consumer spending.
As for you Mike- If it wasn't for the fact I live way far away and you wouldn't be able to see your daughter or your fiancee- you could sleep on my couch any time you need a place. Unfortunately my apartment is no where near where you need to be- with your family. Though if there is a way I can help, let me know.
And Headhunter, I agree 100%. Thus I will never marry for money, ever. I'd rather be starving to death and free than well fed and captive of misery.

I have been made officially redundant twice, but only once when I had a mortgage. Due to superannuation law changes, I've just had a take-home-pay cut and with two mortgages, I'm definitely feeling pressure. No holidays anywhere (Christmas leave will be spent at home). No unnecessary spending. Apparently the cost of living has gone down recently...I'm yet to see that.
I work in the oil industry and have noticed a HUGE change (slash) in our budget. A lot of the projects in my department were marginally economic when the oil price was high....now it seems a lot of it will be left in the ground because it's too expensive to drill and we can't get a good price for it. Next year is all "firm" (ie budgets have already been handed out), but it's 2010 where I think I'm probably going to have to move to another team. Fortunately I doubt that I'll be made redundant.
To everyone who has lost their jobs or had hours cut : hang in there!! It's a cycle, so there will be an end to the gloom soon.

I myself haven't been laid off, but my mom has been twice in the past six months or so... I've tried my damnedest to move out of the basement, but every time I started setting up appointments to look at apartments, something would happen and I'd have to give up all my savings to my family. But I'd always recover. This time around, it's much harder to bounce back. Now my mother is completely unemployed and though my boyfriend and I understand, it doesn't seem like there's gonna' be any break for any of us anytime soon... I get paid pretty decently at my job (Funny enough, Antonia, I work at Off The Grill which used to be a Steak Out xd ), but my full time job has been cut down to part time and now I'm kinda' balancing bills (both mine and my parent's) from paycheck to paycheck. Though I do feel pretty selfish for even complaining in the slightest... I had a part time retail job that I quite because I wasn't happy there. But thus is the price I pay for happiness. But still, I do count my blessings. I know that if I had moved out when I had the chances to that there really is no telling what kind of boat I'd be in now...
My heart goes out to you, Super Buick. I'll be keeping a thought for you and your family...

no real type of severance package was offered, except the fact that my company will pay my medical benefits 100% through the end of the year (whoop-de-freaking-do). i'm eligible for unemployment compensation, though that will be about half of my weekly earnings, at best. they told me that my layoff should only last about a month, but i'm taking this opportunity to find a more substancial place of employment. until i manage to find something, be it my old job back to me or new full-time employment, i am actively looking for some sort of job. i have an application in a few coffee shops, a couple restaurants, and even have a few in multiple night clubs as security. hopefully something will pan out very soon. i'd like to make some sort of christmas for my daughter.

i was never laid off.well i don“t really have a real job rigth now, i“m jumping for a part time job to another. i had much luck until now someone always told me were i can find something and i just went there asked and got the job. at the moment i“m lucky that my chef is very messy and addle and he and i are the only persons who can really handle the computer. so i have an important position: they need me cause only i know how to do some things when hes not at work. i guess i would be laid off if he wouldn“t be so addle.
hope you find a job soon Super Buick.

First of all, wow, dude.. My sincerest condolences, I hope you get your old job back soon, and manage to get something decent to add to your UE this month.
I've never been laid off, given that I've worked at two retail stores on summers and the rest of the time as a TA for my university.. But I finish my master's in architecture in one more semester, and I'm getting increasingly worried as to whether I'll find a job or not.. I don't really want to leave Puerto Rico and the love of my life. I don't think that there's much oportunity in the mainland US that there isn't here, nor do I really want to go back. Not finding a job is not really an option for me pride-wise (HOLLA AT HeadHunter! lol) cos I just need to move out already, period.
My parents have been self employed all of their lives together, but my father's trying to develop a residential proyect right now and he's very worried he'll have to pack up the plans with the land and try to sell that and run, instead of actually building it. Things are getting scary across the board, and I'm biting down hard on my nails.. Good luck to everyone.

I found out yesterday (talking to my boss) that no one is going to be promoted next year unless there is a "good business case". That, of course, means that only the very very upper management. Considering I'm only one up from the bottom of the ladder, I can't even apply for a pay rise and promotion for at least another 18 months. While I'm feeling sorry for myself, I'm very happy to have a job that I enjoy.

I just got an email from a friend of mine - both his Dad and his sister were made redundant last week. Normally he's such a happy, up-beat guy, but he's been really knocked by it. So my thoughts and best wishes are with everyone - and their families, friends and even pets. It's amazing how contagious stress is. At least there is a little comfort in knowing that you're not alone. heart

On a sidenote, one of my best friends had her entire department reduced to two people; her and the daughter of the president of the company. She's really scared right now, and I can't blame her, because if they cut anyone else, well, it definitely won't be her co-worker.
What gets me now is the way businesses are laying off people. They tell their employees that they won't be firing anybody, and then pull individuals in and let them know that they will have to take a massive pay/hourly cut if they choose to remain with the company. So yeah, they're not firing anyone, they're just forcing people to quit so they can save on severance packages. It's a shame...
Oh, and total friends laid off due to recession = 5.
