Neh, I don't think L became a shinigami. I don't think shinigami really get replaced either, but it's very possible that humans who use the Death Note become shinigamis. I agree with that one line about humans who use the Death Note not being able to go to heaven or hell being interpreted that way.
But in the live action movies, L used the Death Note.
so to some extent, you could say the point is moot...
on a side note,

I like to go by the manga's ending and not the anime or the movies, personally. Besides, it would be a bit rediculous for L to become a shinigami or even go to heaven for that matter. For one, it was revealed at the end that there is no such thing as heaven or hell, all that exists in the afterlife is Mu or nothingness. Secondly, if there was a heaven I don't think L would be there. No offense to L, but he did use some pretty immoral tactics just to catch Kira. Furthermore, only those that use the death note become shinigamis. Which seems to be the fate Light was given in the anime.
In anycase, I like to keep an optomistic idea that L's soul just wanders around in nothingness searching for sweets.

L wouldn't become a shinigami. he has spent all this time trying to catch Kira, so why would he become a creature that must kill humans to live? Even if he did become one, he wouldn't be for long since i believe that he would refuse to kill others for this very selfish purpose.

From just looking at the manga, anime, and movies (no special cuts or anything), in the manga he would not be a shinigami, but in the movie he would be, since he did write his own name in the death note.. I think it would be really cool if he was, but it would kind of make him ooc if he just had to start killing people. He wouldn't be the same, i think.
Still, it would be cool. With the wings and all.
Also, I have my theories on manga-Near becoming a shinigami. Because didn't they (the rest of the team) think that Near wrote down Mikami's name in the Death Note to make him go crazy in prison? So that would make him one, right?

I think Light and Misa probably became shinigami... I actually wouldn't want L to be one, as other people have said. He'd hate it. And, of course, I'd hate to think of him looking like a shinigami.....
