While in Japan I learned a few proverbs. Many of them had to do with sake (which I wont share with you). Anyway, I do want to list the common ones. Please feel free to share! Dont worry about how short or long they are or if there is an English equivalent! Let's learn some new stuff!

Hana Yori Dango

"Dumplings are better than cherry blossoms."

This is a description of the person who does not appreciate elegance. It also means to choose real achievement rather than empty reputation.

* My co-worker told me that (in explanation of the proverb) flowers are beautiful but it is more pleasing to eat dumplings (because you can taste/eat the food rather than the beauty of a flower).

Saru mo ki kara ochiru.

saru~ monkey

mo~ too/even

ki~ tree(s)

kara~from

ochiru~to fall/will fall

English: Even monkeys fall from trees. (Even experts mess up once in a while.)
