Don't say the sky is the limit...

I'm a band member doing winterguard. At practice yesterday I tossed my rifle and bashed my thumb pretty bad. It still hurts like a mf today, and since I didn't do guard during the marching season and haven't dropped equipment on myself enough, I don't know what do to about it.

What do you do? Ice it? Brace it? Leave it?

...because there are footprints on the moon.

Either ice it, or just leave it. There's not much else you can do. There's very little you can do about finger injuries in guard and so most the time we just leave them, I wouldn't spin for the weekend if you can avoid it.

Ice it if it is swollen, heat it if there is pain. Does it feel like an air bubble is between the joints? You could have jammed it possibly but if the pain is still there in the next few days GO TO YOUR DOCTOR! It could be a spraine. but take it easy on the spinning and tell your instructors the situation... I've seen more friends ruin their colorguard career by not telling when they are hurt.

When in doubt, visit your doctor... and if there's a sports medicine specialist at your doctor's practice, it might be good to see that person specifically. It's not like we can diagnose your problem over the internet. Rifles can cause anything from deep bruising to sprains to broken bones. Take it easy and, as Inwe said, keep your instructor in the loop.

I'd say ice it and then just not spin for a few days. That's what I did, and it was just badly bruised, so it all worked out.

I'm not on rifle line but i've gotten my share of finger injuries
x_x

I usually just leave it there.
it'll probably just hurt reaaally bad when you hit your finger
then just be bruised for a while.

sadly i have a finger injury right now.
