PostPosted: Mon Feb 18, 2008 12:42 am

the story of my school's pep band:
we only play at the homecoming game, and there is only 10-20 of us
we are conducted by a senior trombonist
but next year its me and my friend co-conducting
and we are going to try to play at all of the home games
the most recent homecoming game went something like this:
COLD. SNOW. ICY BLEACHERS.
it was about 25 degrees outside
so my friends and i (about 1/2 the band) got together beforehand and went school-spirit crazy
we had SPRAY CANS OF SPARKLES (hence the siggy)
and ribbons. lots of ribbons.
so we played the entire game, which was wicked long and went into overtime
and all of our non-band friends danced around us
and we were dancing while playing
it was soooo fun
and then the cheerleaders started coordinating their routines with us as well
which was really cool
and afterwords we spent an hour or so sitting in the band room drinking hot chocolate, until the bd yelled at us to go home
good times in pep band
xd biggrin xd biggrin

I love pep band. And it's not just for getting into all of the men's basketball games for free or for getting to travel with them on tournament trips. I love how we get to be so obnoxious. I mean, the worst that we're allowed to say is "Boo" but there's so many other things. One of the meaner ones is how we yell "Nice shot buddy" whenever someone on the other team misses a freethrow.

We do pep band in basketball season. At the last game during half time they had a bunch of little kids play during that time and our teacher wanted us (percussion) to play drum calls/cadences if they made a shot. When one kid was running, me and the entire brass section were like, "GO! GO! YOU CAN MAKE IT!" Another guy was laughing his a** off. Then the kid made a basket and he was like, "Oh! Okay guys Kevin." (That's the name of a drum call.) We were all laughing so hard.

At one game we were just minding our business, then one kid in the brass was talking to the guy next to me and said that we should have a drum call called Grey Poupon. Then he kept chanting grey poupon over and over getting louder. I thought that by half time he would be screaming it, but he stopped. Then they actually made a drum call called grey poupon.

When I get bored, I watch the cheerleaders and because of that, I now have half of their cheers memorized. I was doing one and a guy next to me was like, "Um....Elena.....please tell me that you're just guessing and that you don't really know the cheer." Oh but I did.

Once a bass player threw is stick in the air flipping it. Instead of catching it, it hit his drum. And it was really loud. And I'm always in front of the trombone kids so their spit always lands somewhere on me. It's gross.

Who do you play for? It sounds like you're in a college pep band...
Getting in free to be obnoxious is pretty fun 4laugh

Our cheers consist of:

* telling the other team they suck (our whole arena does it). It goes something like

Announcer: "And now, the [HEIGHT] [YEAR] [POSITION] from, [LOCATION].....[NAME]!

Arena: SUCKS!!

For the coach, it's

Announcer: "And the head coach for the [team], [name]"

Arena:HE SUCKS TOO!

*Making obnoxious noises and yelling things during foul shots (I've been yelling diseases...it's worked pretty well)

*Digging up dirt about the other team and making a cheer about it. For example:

WVU: START YOUR TRACTORS! or LOCK YOUR SHEEP UP! or 13-9!
UConn: WHERE'S MY LAPTOP!?! or SIT DOWN, CALHOUN!

(if any of you go to these schools, we tease because we love wink )

* Telling the players what they're doing, as in "DRIBBLE! DRIBBLE! PASS! FAKE! SHOOT! STAND THERE!"

*Foul-outs "LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT RIGHT...." (this includes shifting weight) "SSSIIIIIIT DOOOOOWWWN!"

We also mess with the cheerleaders, because they have to follow the band's cheers. They like to switch between drum beats quickly, or completely screw up the speed.

Seriously, college pep band is awesome 3nodding

Ah, pep band...

*cries* I don't have pep band anymore, we finished all the pep band games and it's my senior year! *cries harder*

Ah, the memories, though. Interesting enough, the drum majors actually organized one this year. It was a big game, and since we'd had a couple of cancellations, we wanted to make up for that, so we gathered some people and did pep band. I switched between baritone and trumpet because the first trumpet player couldn't get the high notes (why he's considered a "first trumpet" is beyond me).

There was another game that was rescheduled and only like 15 people showed up. I had to play first trumpet at that one, whereas I normally have been playing low brass in pep band. It was a workout, but was it ever fun. It was also my last pep band ever, barring special circumstances.
