Supposedly, in Greek Mythology, February 14th is also the day Aphrodite gave birth to the demigod Eros, but this is not a fully proven fact yet.
Amazing what Ancient History 101 can teach you about holidays.
Did you know that Santa Claus is modeled after Saint Nicholas, patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, children and students? He was never officially canonized, but his reputation developed amongst the faithful, as it often did. He was known for anonymously giving gifts, which is what Santa Claus is based on.

Dude, I thought the holiday was a desperate attempt by the Catholics to get Pagans to stop being Pagan?

Having a boyfriend or girlfriend is totally overrated. People shouldn't sweat Valentine's day so much.

heroes never die Dude, I thought the holiday was a desperate attempt by the Catholics to get Pagans to stop being Pagan? Actually, that's Christmas. Valentines Day is (nowadays) a corporate shill, what I like to call a Hallmark Holiday.
*Edit: And nothing will ever stop people from choosing their own religions, no matter how much die-hard Christians wish otherwise xD
**Edit Edit: This is just my opinion. Not the opinion of everybody.

**Edit Edit: This is just my opinion. Not the opinion of everybody. Actually, most Christian holidays were taken from "pagan" holidays. In this case the Roman holiday Lupercalia, celebrated on February 15th, was overshadowed by the Catholic holiday that celebrated the life of some obscure guy named Valentine that nobody really knows much about. But the point is that it wasn't pagan, heaven forbid. rolleyes

It is such a refreshing change to see somebody who actually knows the truth behind the holidays. And all religion started with neo-paganism, really.
