I need some quick and easy suggestions to get rid of the smell of cat litter. With our apartment closed up tight because of winter and the addition of the new kitten, the smell is becoming a little overbearing inside the apartment.

It's fine when it's just us here, but mold has caused our shower to have to be re-done and the superintendant is bringing the manager over to see it tomorrow. Hence, I need to quickly get rid of the smell of cat.

Any suggestions on how to mask or get rid of the cat smell?

If you have the money, go out and buy a HEPA or HEPA-type air filter. We got one for the husband's allergies and it takes all the smells out of the air. It's a portable Honeywell HEPA air filter with a permanent filter. It just plugs in to the wall and on high setting, completely recirculates the air in the room five times an hour. I think it was about $150 at Wal-mart, but they had a smaller version for under $100 that does a smaller room (you could just keep moving it around to the different rooms in your house.)

If a big purchase is not an option, perhaps you could borrow or buy a cheap dehumidifier and do some serious cleaning. Sprinkle your carpets with baking soda and then vacuum. Febreeze your soft furniture.

Is it just the general cat smell, or have they sprayed anywhere? I've tried a couple of enzymatic cat pee removers and they've worked really well.

If I had the money, I'd go out and buy that. Unfortunately, money's a little tight right now.

It's just the litter smell mostly that's the problem. My two boys are fixed, but with my luck, the one we're cat-sitting will start spraying tomorrow right before the building manager gets here.

I'm about to go into serious cleaning mode in a few minutes. I'll try the baking soda and vacuuming. Should I let it sit for any amount of time? I'll go out and buy a thing of Febreeze tomorrow morning and go crazy with it. That should mask the smell hopefully.

I tried opening a window, but they're all iced over so I can't get any air circulation.

I'd say minimum 15 minutes, longer if you can keep everyone off the carpets for that long.

Arm and Hammer Carpet and Room Deodorizer is supposed to be good... I imagine it's mostly baking soda and probably doesn't cost a whole lot more than a couple of boxes of baking soda, so you might want to try that.

Do you have an exhaust fan in your bathroom or kitchen? You could try turning that on, and maybe setting up an oscillating fan in the other rooms to get the air circulating a bit more.

If you scroll to the bottom of this article there's a list of safe, natural, chemical-free suggestions for freshening up the air in your place: http://www.eppa.ca/meetings/spring cleaning.html

I did the baking soda and left it on as long as I could before cats decided it looked yummy. I can't tell if it made the place smell a little better though, I'm so used to cat smells. I'm going to assume it did because they were walking around with their nose to the floor, probably wondering what happened to their 'lovely' smell. I'll see what my fiance thinks when he gets home, if not, it's off to the grocery store tomorrow morning to buy more deodorizer.

We have a fan in our bathroom but it doesn't work right, which is what helped cause this whole thing in the first place. It took the superintendant six months to getting around to semi-fixing it, and by that time, the steam had already gotten into the walls of the window-less bathroom and resulted in mold. But, apparently, he says it's our fault. e.e [/rant]

We moved the litter boxes back into a storage room (they know where they are) so hopefully that keeps the new smells from getting too far into the apartment.

I'll go read that article now.

Thank you for your help, by the way. The best thing I could think of was spraying some vanilla scented body spray all over the place. xD
