As for black cats in general, I have three:

Spooky, who is all black exc. for a couple of white hairs on his neck and a belly patch. Part Persian, ginormous and has three distinct layers of fur. His eyelids, whiskers and nose and all the skin parts on his face are totally black, so in the dark, all you can see is a tiny light green halo from his eyes...he really lives up to his name then, lol. He's a big old affectionate bear, but he can get grumpy sometimes. He HATES having his nails clipped and I have the scars to prove it! He loves being brushed, but his hair mats easily, and he gets testy when you try to remove them. I bought this thing called a "Furminator" and over the course of a week last fall I got most of his undercoat removed. Now, he gets a lot less mats but when he sees that brush, he growls and runs away, lol.

Sisko, who is a typical black/white tuxedo and part Maine Coon. He's more sneaky than anything else, very quiet...and it's always the quiet ones, isn't it? He's actually the most tolerant, a little emo now and then but overall the most even-tempered cat. Whines when he doesn't get his way or you try to clip his claws.

Pocky, a mostly black torti-and-white cat. She's still pretty young; she'll be 2 in April. Very active, tolerates being held but would rather not be (unlike the other two, who love human contact). If you read the epic posts I made in the intro thread, you can read about her own sport, Pocky Hockey. Very fiesty to the other cats, but she seems to be playing -- only they don't see it that way at all!

So Spooky is really my only all black cat, but I don't know if he's typical or not. I have friends who have slinky little all black cats, and they're all a little wild/very active.

The Winnipeg Free Press actually had a good article about black animals not too long ago: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/life/story/4084003p-4683202c.html
This was the inset: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/life/story/4084003p-4683341c.html

Great articles. I really don't get it, though. I tend to prefer darker animals, but I'm not terribly picky, but I always find black to be sleek and gorgeous.

I'll find the exact link later, but Best Friends, the no-kill rescue group that was granted 22 of Michael Vick's fighting dogs, has noticed that the black and dark-coated dogs are more shy and fearful. They are still studying them (under court order, the dogs are the subject of intense behavioral studying) to learn more.

My theory is that with these dogs at least, the people involved in the fighting ring *expected* the black dogs to be tougher and meaner and so the dogs may have been subjected to more mistreatment. If you read the site at www.bestfriends.org, you'll see what I mean (and you'll wish MV got 23 life sentences rather than 23 months scream scream scream ).

Here's a direct link to the Best Friends' page article on the black pitbulls rescued from the Michael Vick fighting operation:

Why are the black dogs more scared?

welcome to the guild, stella! your sig tells me you're a huge cat lover ^^.

spooky sounds a little bit like grumbles. if he really is, then you're very brave for trimming his nails and brushing out his mats. i can't do either of those with grumbles, or else she will bite off my fingers. i already have enough scars on my arms and hands from dealing with her and her temper. the only time she got her nails trimmed was when she was under anesthesia. she was having her teeth cleaned, and her vet was nice enough to trim her nails at the same time. ah, it was so nice cuddling her for a few days after that.

perhaps color has nothing to do with crankiness, but i find it especially cute and funny when black cats are particularly cranky. perhaps because black fur makes me think of stormy clouds...
