So, in preparation for getting another cat I've been contemplating names (actually, I've been thinking of names for future cats for a while now, even when a second cat was just a dream.)

I've picked out a list of names that I like, and I've been getting to know the kitty, and will probably choose a name for her a few days after I get her home, so she has a chance to settle down and become more herself (since shelter-life can do weird things to cats) so that her name suits her as well as possible.

Her name is currently Kim, which I'm starting to think kind of suits her (or at least, I'm getting used to it) but there's no way we could have a cat named Kim in the house - my hubby's ex-wife's name is Kim and that would just be all kinds of awkward.

I personally like old-fashioned sounding human names for cats. Currently on my list for consideration is (in no particular order):

Ivy
Emily
Isobelle
Josephine
Sophie
Beatrix
Naomi

Violet was named in a similar manner - I picked out a bunch of names that I liked and then she got the one that seemed to best fit her.

The family cats at my mum's were all named as a group effort, by the family. I think my mum suggested Lili, which we all liked; Bart was named after Bart Simpon, because we all liked the Simpsons, and he was always getting himself into trouble one way or another; I don't remember how Rosette was picked; Rowan was named by my roommate at the time; Macray was named after the street where we found her; Tiger & Calico were basically named for their looks (real creative, right?) and Kitty came to us with the name Kitty and we never changed it.

How do you pick names for your cats and what kinds of names do you like for cats? What's the story behind your cats' names?

back when i was fantasizing about getting my own cat, i wanted human-sounding names as well. i really liked the names matt and brian. i was also tickled by goofy-sounding names like tuna and patches.

then i was ready to adopt mitts, and friends asked me, "what'll you name your new cat?" suddenly the names i liked before didn't sound right anymore. i came up with the name for mitts when i was taking him home for the first time. i was handling him really carefully because his paws were still in a delicate state (the vet had to put him under anesthesia before he could clean and treat his paw infection). he was meowing like crazy because he was frightened ("where is this big one taking me?") and he was poking out his paw through the grate in his crate. i noticed his paws have white mittens and booties on them. i always thought mittens is a cute word, so i named him mitts.

it took me a little longer to name grumbles, about a few days. for a while i called her by her shelter name, which was gwen. the first thing i noticed about her is that she has a temper and grumbles if you as much as pet her the wrong way. i always thought grumbles is a cute word also... so she became grumbles.

if i'm going to get another cat, i have absolutely no idea what to name him/her @_@.

All my cats names were picked out before the cat was. We had a general idea of what we wanted the cats to look like though.

I picked the first name because I always wanted a cat named 'Oreo'. I don't know why, I just always did. So, we picked a cute little black and white kitten.

The second one was a little harder. We knew we wanted an orange kitty, but we had no idea for names. We sat down one night and started going over every word we could think of. We finally got to going through the planets and the name 'Mercury' just seemed right.

The third one, we knew it was going to be a grey kitty, because the whole litter was grey. We looked up cat names online for this one. We decided on either 'Whisper' or 'Echo', but ended up choosing 'Esper' instead.

Well, some of the cats were named by me and others by my mother. I tend to like names that end in the "ie" sound though. xD
Lilly I was too young when I named her to remember my line of thought, though she should just be glad enough I was older than when I once named a guinea pig "Dribbles" lmao.
Abby, she was named by my Mom, as well as Zoey and Mikey.
I named Daisy because when I first saw her, I couldn't help but want an ironic name for her rather than a traditional name for a mostly black cat. She was slightly bulky, and mostly black...therefor I went for something delicate and white - Daisy just happened to be what popped into my head at the time.
Ellie, she kind of named herself. Her personality just screamed the name at me. 3nodding

Oh dear. So the prospect of getting a kitten seems to be going pretty well so far, and my father seems relatively okay with the idea, but now naming is hitting a big brick wall. The name is up to my sister and I.

Her original choice was "tiger." And then "nymphadora." And now "tonks."

How about a normal human-like name, plz? gonk

I personally love the name beatrix (as well as any other old-english like name), so her and I are going back and forth on AIM about this.

Yes on AIM. Yes, her room is next to mine. It's easier this way. xd

Those are all nice names, Sunshine. I also like -ie names. Lilly is a fabulous cat name - if we didn't already have a Lili kitty in the family, I'd have that name on my list of potential names for future-cats.

Unknown: If your sister really wants a Harry Potter name you could call the cat Belatrix/Beatrix. They're close enough that it probably wouldn't confuse the cat and everyone else, and then everyone is happy. whee

My original choice was "Beatrix" or "Beatrice," but apparently "they're too old and ugly." crying

I prefer giving pets names with class, but apparently I'm too stuck up according to people. xd

I've since suggested Rena and Alma, both of which I love, but my sister is now stuck on "Willow." A big improvement from her past ideas, but it sounds more masculine, and the kitten is female. Still looking through name lists for other names she might like.

I can tell I'mma give myself a headache over this. xd

Merico with the accent on the 'i'.

Actually, i usually name my cats after we get them. I see how their personality is and that's how i name them.

For example, my cats are named Flip and Puzzle. that's because one cat loved to flipped upside down when he was younger, and the other was always puzzled when she grew up learning about the world outside of our house. And she's a calico, so her fur is all jigsaw like. 3nodding That's how i'd put it.

I'm partial to Emily. *lol*

Choosing a name for me is really hard. I usually pick a bunch I like and make others choose.

I love the name Willow, that's what my friend's cat used to be named. If it helps any, think of a weeping willow and it's delicacy and beauty...it sounds less masculine that way. xD

We have a running mythology theme going with cats in my family. My parents currently have Persephone aka Sephie, Aurora aka Rory aka Bucky, Thor, Phoebe, and Echo. They also had an Artemis but she moved on to the Rainbow Bridge as a kitten.

My two are Renato (named after the person that rescued him) and Loki. Loki was Tinkerbell at the shelter, but once he was introduced to Renato he became this little hellion so after a few days I called him Loki and he had this look of "finally you figured out my name, duh."

LOL I don't know about Beatrix... LOL
I wouldn't name my cat after me.
What I do is I get names from pets on anime or manga.
If not from books I enjoyed reading.
Yea, a bit cliched but that's ok with me.
My first cat's name was Crookshanks.
Then the beautiful cat I have right now is Maximum Ride. Named after the main character of the books Maximum Ride. LOL
Her kittens I named
Pochi after a peacock pet from Clamp School Detectives
Poplar after a fox pet from Itadakimasu
Pretty after no one, she was just the most beautiful, loving, and cute kitty so I left her name as Pretty.
Tiny Jiji after Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service.

Angel - Well, my dad wanted to name it "Boots" because her paws are all white and the rest of her is brown but since I was 6 I wanted "Angel" for some reason and I won.

Princess - Ever since she was a kitten all she ever did it sit around. She never really liked to play and all she ate was that expencive cat food. She is a tabby cat so the looks had nothing to do with it.

Oreo - At first we had no clue what to name him. He was white with black spots all over him. He was a calico without orange or brown. I was hungry one day and I found a oreo. I realised the cat looked like the oreo and named him that.

Shadow - All black cat. Go figure.

A good way to name a cat that I use is depending by their appreance, shape and where they came from.
