Thanks for your responses guys!
^^ Also, I think that's why I'm going to cosplay though, is to get into the role and have fun x.x it's my first time, so I definatly won't be winning any prizes or anything.

There are only a few complications with my plan thus far XD (aren't there always?)
Materials? what did you make your costumes out of? How did you improvise, etc...?
Facepaint or Makeup? What if your cosplay character has a different face structure than yours? T.T
And, most importantly...
Refrence Photos!
It's hard to get good photos that show both color and details, including those in the back of the outfit. That's honestly the hardest part for me right now, aside from getting it finished on time (I still have a few months and I've been planning for a while)

So, Vivi has this big hat

And I was thinking of doing the entire cosume in felt
and then painting my face black, and around my eyes yellow

What do you think?

I don't have a lot of experience (3 costumes and working on a 4th), but I'll see what I can do.

I think that using felt would be fine, just be careful about it peeling. It also stretches surprisingly easy. (and it doesn't shrink back, either)
As far as the face goes, I think that making a full-head mask out of light weight black fabric (you don't want to get too hot) with a fine yellow mesh for the eyes. One of the main things you have to think about when it comes to cosplaying is comfort. (Ex: Can you wear it for hours on end without it driving you nuts?)

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with your costume. Post pictures as you make progress, it will help us with giving tips.

A cotton twill with interfacing should work.

But don't paint your face black. paint=bad results. Get one of those see though body suits (zentai suits, I think) and add yellow fabric to it.

@Midoori: OMG! VIVI! <3 *glomp* I love Vivi! Heck I love FFIX in general xD. I wish you good luck with the costume! biggrin I'm hoping to do Princess Garnet for London Expo in England so yay for more FFIX cosplays! ^-^ May I suggest simply wearing a balaclava for the head? For Vivi specifically I don't think face paint would work so well ^^;; And with a balaclava you could add in yellow mesh in the eye holes =3 And I agree that some form of cotton would be the best material to use for the costume, interfacing and spray starch is the perfect way of making Vivi's giant hat stay upright! =D If it's not as stiff as you want it to be even after adding interfacing and spray starch then add in wire coils inside, though with wire the hat will be pretty stiff xD;

@Nekuma: Ooo! I've made Mascot Yuna/Moogle costume before! =D It's actually really really easy [it's the easiest thing I've made from scratch] I used chicken wire as the base of it and basically just smashed it to make sure it was the right shape xD It should be perfectly stable then! I then added bubble wrap over the whole thing just so that the wire doesn't show through the fabric, then I added eye holes... BIG eye holes and the voila! I have my own chicken wire base! Then you just go crazy with the fabric xD Here's the outcome of my moogle costume:

There are other ways like paper mache-ing but... I was lazy and so I just went for the quick easy chicken wire option haha xD

Oh and my first cosplay was Duo Maxwell, I wanted to start small and so I basically just closet cosplayed eheh heh xD; Pictures of Duo cosplay:

As I said currently working on a Princess Garnet cosplay and also a Sakura [Tsubasa] costume and a White Mushroom [Kingdom Hearts] costume xD

Main advice I can give about cosplaying... is have fun! XD And wear your costume loads before you wear it to a con! That way you'll KNOW it won't fall apart! Or at least you'll be confident that it won't fall apart as you've been wearing it at home for quite a bit ^_^ The number of times I have worn my Sakura costume is unbelievable haha xD

Vivi seems like a really hard first cosplay.
good luck.
I suggest not painting your face unless you do make-up very well.
If you decide on painting your face getting yellow contacts would be cool.

my first cosplay was demyx.
It was horrid
D;
I had no wig
(the one I bought was disgusting)
I bought the coat xD

The only thing I am proud of is that I made his sitar (sp)
It turned out really well
>w<

Just have fun. My cosplay was horrid but it was the best experiance ever! over time I have gotten better at my cosplays.
I have done a total of four and I am working on my fifth and sixth.

I am going to be
The Prince from katamari
and
orgy Riku from KHII

My advice for anyone cosplaying (I learned this from cold hard experience) is wear the shoes your going in for at least an hour each day for at least a week before you go. and not to sit around in either WALK in them, they may feel like little clouds for the first fifteen minutes but after that they just might start to hurt. And being caught in that situation for hours at a convention is not pretty, especially when your stuck with only that footwear for the whole weekend.
