Hello. I know I haven't posted much here (I'm kinda shy...), but I was wondering what one would consider to be various levels of Japanese. What would you say is a basic criteria for each general stage of learning (i.e. raw beginner, beginner, intermediate, advanced, fluent, etc.) How many & what things does one need to know? How fast is the recognition of the spoken language? And also, how long did it personally progress to the next level of ability? Anyone and everyone's opinions would be greatly appreciated, since this is most likely one of those things that varies from person to person.

Most people consider me to be a fluent speaker-- but I general consider myself intermediate advanced/advanced.

Umm..maybe a beginner or Raw. xd I only know full alphabet of Katakana and some Hiragana. and I can speak a few sentences but not much. so maybe a raw..

Let's see....Last time I took the Japanese OPI (Oral Proficiency Test) I think I ranked Intermediate Mid or High...Pretty sure Mid though...
Going for the 2nd level of the JLPT in December....If I get that I'll still only consider myself intermediate...And I've been studying 8 years now, just started my 9th...
I don't think I'll ever have enough confidence in myself to call my skill level "fluent" or "native-level" even if I do somehow manage to pass the 1st level of the JLPT in the future.

I can read Hiragana and Katakana but I can't translate it very well. I can read and write about 100 Kanji or so. I know some sentences, but I still kinda suck, so to be honest I consider myself raw/beginner.

I think other people tend to overestimate one's fluency, whereas the person in question, conscious of how much they have left to learn, would tend to underestimate it.
I consider myself "advanced", but nowhere near "fluent". I suppose I'll be close to being fluent at the point where I can ask a Japanese person what something means, and actually understand their Japanese explanation; and then fluent when I don't need to ask anymore. Both are probably a long way off.
