Kyumi wouldn't even bother to look up from the board when she heard Maru's huffs. Instead, she'd just watch the pieces move.
Once it was her turn again, she'd contemplate moving a different pawn forward, only to change her mind and bring her rook forward instead.

Kojiro danced the mare around the Daidoji, and although he felt a few swings come close, not a blow had landed. Kojiro and ume-chan came to the final stretch. "Two more apples will make a grand feast!" Kojiro whispered as he urged ume-chan forward!

@ Shogi Competition:
Kitsu Kyumi has 1 banked raise. Soshi Maru has 2 banked raises.
Soshi Maru scanned(?) the board, and though Kyumi seemed to move her Rook forward a bit pre-emptively, there was nothing for it to take but pawns, and most of its moves would just get it captured.
There was one opening where it might be able to grab a pawn and get out, but Maru moved a Lance to intercept if Kyumi got greedy. {1 raise, 21 vs TN 10, raise is banked.}

Kojiro dismounted ume-chan somewhat clumsily and brought her back to the beginning of the course, a pleased expression on his face.

Maru would begin tapping her index fingernail on the side as she briefly pauses to reassess the board. Tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap.
After an unusually long wait, she simply moved a pawn so she could bring her Knight out. {1 raise, 14 vs TN 10, raise is banked.}

Kyumi would glare at Maru as the other woman tapped on the side. Despite her irritation, she would leave it at that and would say nothing as she assessed the situation on the board.
After a short moment, she'd bring forward a lance.

Kitsu Kyumi has 2 banked raises. Soshi Maru has 4 banked raises.
Maru saw an opportunity to capture Kyumi's Rook, using her own. She moved her OWN Rook across to intercept the rival piece. On her next turn, she would simply move forward and take it.
There was no countermeasures, no pressing pieces. Just two Rooks, in a stand off, and it was Kyumi's turn. {1 raise, 12 vs TN 15; Kyumi gains a banked raise!}

Kyumi noticed where Maru's rook now was, and was not about to leave it there to be captured. However, she wouldn't actually try to capture Maru's rook but would move it as far away from Maru's piece as she could.

"Nicely done, Bayushi-san."
Denbe stepped up next, seeing the Scorpion ride. His very simple, but entirely successful ride calmed Denbe's unease about riding, and inspired some confidence. Taking the pony from him as he stopped, the Hare paused. He'd hardly ever ridden before. Mostly he had traveled local lands and found his feet got him there fast enough. Besides the issue of money of course. And now he had to figure out how to mount, not as easy as he would have liked with his slight height disadvantage.
Luckily, he had plenty of spring to jump up, and settling, turned to the course, using the task ahead to push his discontent about the last round from his mind; his own failure, and a failing as if he owed Sozen an apology.
Struggling to figure out how to guide the pony, Denbe spurred it on towards the hurdles and readied himself for the springing.

Kitsu Kyumi has 3 banked raises. Soshi Maru has 4 banked raises.
Maru would let out a low growl of frustration, unsure what to do now. Why did she move the rook? Tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap...
Tap tap tap tap tap tap tap...
She would move her knight forward, positioning it in such a way that would capture the Rook if it tried to capture any pieces. It seemed to be one of those moves that turned out more clever than the player initially intended. {1 raise to increase Kyumi's TN, 24 vs TN 20. Kyumi's base TN is now 10!}

Having ridden and ducked safely through, the Hare next approached the ditches- and spotting them safely in time, wavered on how much he could control the horse before growing frustrated and simply riding it safely past them rather than trying to leap the things and blow past like he would have liked.

"Would you stop that... Please?" Kyumi would ask. Her growing irritation was obvious, though she had managed to avoid snapping at Maru.
Kyumi would opt to leave her rook there for the time being, and instead would use another piece to go after the knight.
