I'm into fantasy novels, in particular the works of Garth Nix. I've only read the Abhorsen Trilogy, 3 out of the Keys to the Kingdom Series and about 1/3 of The Ragwitch. I'm also into manga and have read all the Azumanga Daioh managa, Chrono Crusade Vol 1 and 2 and Megatokyo Vol 1 even though the latter is not really proper manga as it's done in left-to-right format. 3nodding

I've read the Abhorsen Trilogy and I thought it was pretty good but I prefer Phillip Pullman...I think his books are better written or possibly aimed at an older audience..I don't know..but hte Abhorsen Trilioy was ok for a quick entertaining light read 3nodding

I've read the Northern Lights and 1/2 of Subtle Knife but I found it too complicated-there was too much science involved for me lol xd . I prefer Necromancy and ancient evils(Orannis the Destroyer kicks a**!) to conscious particles which respond to thought. I agree with you in that His Dark Materials are aimed at an older audience whereas for the Abhorsen Trilogy, I'm right in the middle of the age bracket

hehe that's good then 3nodding I don't like books that involve science..if science comes into it I just put it down sweatdrop

yeah, just because I think the stories had more depth and it was more theological science..the science I don't like reading about is the modern mumbo jumbo...protons and electrons and physics or anything that is related to chemistry...the CSI type stuff

lol yeah exactly xp
Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons" was a bit like that at the beginning but once you read past it it got alot better..it was more about art 3nodding

Kewl! The Star of Kazan is a really good book-it's not actually fantasy but I still really liked it, although I think it's aimed more towards 15-17 year olds-not like the Dan Brown books and such which seemed to be aimed at adults... 3nodding (I'm 16 btw 3nodding )

ah right, I didn't know how old you were. I'm 18. I've never really liked Teen books to be honest, even when I was 13-15 sweatdrop Even though the Dan Brown books are written for adults it's really not difficult language...you could easily read them I think...he's not very good at writing to be honest, I've come across better authors linguistically.

dunno if I mentioned this before but have you ever read Terry Pratchett's books about the Discworld?
PostPosted: Tue Jun 06, 2006 5:10 pm

My favorite authors are Nancy Farmer, Christopher Paoloni, and J.K. Rowling. ^^

I like fantasy novels, if you haven't noticed. xD

I'm reading this book called 'A Great a Terrible Beauty' right now.

I've actually read all of the Harry Potter books believe it or not...they're enjoyable but I'm not REALLY into them...I think she gets far too much credit for her books...she just happened to be around at the right time to get children reading again..I think authors like Phillip Pullman are much better writers technically and linguistically...plus they have original ideas..most of J.K.Rowling's ideas are taken from elsewhere...like trolls and three-headed dogs and the whole wizard school thing was taken from books called The Worst Witch which was about a young girl who goes to witch school..which were written before Rowling wrote hers...

I do like the books..they're enjoyable..and the whole thing about Snape in the last book, got me wanting to read the next asap...but...I think she gets too much credit for what they are..and the whole merchandise thing really annoys me...

@Endless dark

I agree with you on the whole merchandise thing-it really pisses me off! It's meant to be about the books and the storyline and the characters-the merchandise makes it too commercial and overrated. I think her books are very good, don't get me wrong but I agree with you-I think they're a bit overrated, everyone's like 'wow' and what they have to realise is that they are just books-there have been plenty of other books that people like but they don't go 'wow' like they do with HP books. I do agree with the choice to make them into movies though even though she has enough money already *grumble*...

wahey someone agrees with me! usually people start defending harry potter. I like the books yeah but it is overated. Other people write better and don't get as much credit for it and I think it's unfair. But that's how the world works.
I mean, you can basically buy anything with Harry Potter on it...and it's so over the top. It's one think to like Harry Potter and another to buy curtains, mugs and even mobile phone covers with harry potter on... sweatdrop I know it earns alot of money but if I wrote a book I don't think I'd sign a contract to let them make merchandise like that.
PostPosted: Fri Jun 09, 2006 3:50 am

@Endless Dark
Yeah the merchandise makes it very commercial and fake. I mean I think the Abhorsen Trilogy is better and Garth Nix is in discussion with movie directors at the minute but I don't think that we're gonna have heaps of different merchandise with charter symbols on them-maybe exclusive stuff like the items from Forbidden Planet like sword replicas and such but not mugs, curtains and phone covers as you so nicely put it. Harry Potter was a good idea and the books are very good, the movies are very good but the whole image of Harry Potter has sort of become fused with two things:
1. Daniel Radcliffe (who, in my opinion, cannot act for sh*t)
2. Commercialism

When people think of Harry Potter now they don't think about the set of good books, instead they think of Dan Radcliffe *shudder* and all the HP toys they saw in the shop the other day!

yeah, there's a difference between having a film and having some merchandise and having it over the top. For instance, the Discworld series by Terry Pratchetter has been made into animated cartoons, and they sell figurines of the characters..but that's about it really...it's not over the top poorly made toys. Also, even though the da vinci code is huge, they don't have merchandise for that. I suppose people take advantage of kids books because they know they can sell toys. I wouldn't mind if the toys were decent but they're really pathetic, even though kids like them.

And it's true that when people think of harry potter the first thing they think of is the films...they should think of the books..since they came first. It's probably the same with lord of the rings, except that's a classic and so people do remember it's a book.
And I certainly agree that Daniel Radcliffe can't act. Whoever chose to have him as the lead role was dumb. He's so wooden...and I can't understand how young kiddies even think he's sexy?! sweatdrop The girl who plays Hermione is great...and Ron is ok too..but harry...not for me.

Yes yes, when people (mainly fangirls) say "OMG! DANIEL RADCLIFFE IS UBER-HOT!!" I just reply,with,
"You do know he has the brains of a cabbage?"

I like Emma Watson ALOT because she's.....a good actress!*cough* ninja yes that's it-nothing to do whatsoever with the nice scenes in the POA and GOF... but yeah she is a really good actress-the best of them all and yet she has never done professional acting before HP whereas that cabbage(prods D.R.) has been in David Coppefield and is gonna do that strange December Boys thing...*grumble*
