While the Barbarian wanders around an poking things Ruin, Novi and Kuori notice several things. For one that dead planer creatures in the room seem to be from the various levels of hell. Whatever kind of experimentation or research was going on in here it was definitely infernal in nature. Thankfully, none of the creatures they come across still seem alive or any of the magical instruments inherently dangerous. There is definitely a lot of magical energy in the room but it seems almost...stale in nature. Whatever was being done seems to have ended.
Kuori Ruin and Novi also notice something else. There eyes are all drawn to a rectangular object leaning against a wall in a corner. The object was about 6 feet(1.8M) tall 4 feet(1.2M) long and a good foot (.3M) thick. It was covered by a large worn black cloth, obscuring any more detail as to what it might be. However, it seemed to have been treated with a bit more care then anything else in the room.

"Valac, can you pull the curtain?" Ruin asked the bigger and stronger tiefling, motioning to the .65m³ rectangular block. "We might as well see what's behind it."

Novi tugs on the cover and it comes off without much resistance. It settles to the ground reveling an enormous ornately decorated tome. The giant tome is currently locked shut with a lock imbedded in its cover. It bears no markings to reveal what might be written on the pages inside.

Now knowing what it was, Ruin would approach and study the lock.
Thievery 15 (If he can open it he will otherwise see what kind of key is needed to open.)

After studying the lock for a bit Ruin can tell its not a particularly difficult one. He feels it was probably more put in place to keep the contents of the enormous tome safe rather then keep anyone out. However, despite the lock being simple there is definitely some sort of trap linked to it. He would have to be very carful picking the lock to not trigger whatever it was linked up to. The key hole looks pretty standard. The key must look identical, or at least pretty similar, to the kind of key used to lock a door.

As Ruin looks around the immediate area in the lab he does not find a key.

Ruin will wonder uback up the stairs to check the dead Mindflayer.

While the Tiefling heads upstairs, Kuori and Novi look around to no avail.
Novi eventually says, "I can probably try to disarm it." And proceeds to try just that.

Knowing exactly what he is looking for it does not take Ruin long to locate a key on the dead mindflayer. Based on his earlier inspection of the lock he feels rather strongly that this key must go to the book.
As attempts to unlock the book, she hears a promising click. She feels she has successfully unlocked it, however, it is not clear if it has been disarmed or not.

Hearing the rushing Ruin rumble down the rotary stairs Novi nearly gnashes open a new and nasty tear as they pull their polearm out posthaste and point the pole towards the position of their perception only to find their pal, their padre, paling at the pointy poking prod.
Novi backs up to let the lad lavish in the light of the lock and key.

Ruin sticks the key into the enormous tome and it turns with a satisfying click. He feels he can now safely open it.
It takes a little effort to turn the heavy cover but once it is opened the tome is revealed to be pages of hand written notes. The scrawled text stretches from the top to bottom of each giant page complete with drawn diagrams and schematics and other illustrations. Several passages are written in abyssal but most of it is written in common. They seemed to be research notes but it would take some time and studying to figure out what they are about.
((roll me Arcana to try and make sense of the research notes, religion can also be rolled to gain some insight.))
