I came into this thread because I started writing Yaoi before really getting into the genre and fully understanding the "templates" that come with it. I had one person who has read my work and commented that my main pair seem to be both "seke" rather than one being "seme" or "uke". I thought it was an odd comment and had to look into this and find out what the words meant... sweatdrop So now that I know what these words mean and have started becoming more familiar with the culture I'm very happy with my Nepenthe/Anuran pair.
I don't find anything erotic with rape/non-consent and uncharacteristic weeping in any story is a complete turn off for me. stressed Nothing upsets me more than to read fan fiction of any kind that can't keep the characters in character and this is the reason I don't write fan fiction often. The rare times I have it's been just using the world and putting my own original characters in there.
I'm glad I saw this thread and I plan to keep an eye on it with the goal to avoid the common pet peeves in my own writing. 3nodding

1.Badly drawn fan art of the couples in question. If you can't draw, either pratice or don't draw at all. I don't appreciate seeing EnvyXEd look anything else but EnvyXEd. Or just look hideous! Ew! The same goes with poor color choices. I mean Envy doesn't have purple hair!
2.Mpregs! They suck period!
3.Badly written stories with little or no plot.
4.Whiny cry-baby Ukes!
5.Fanfics that are complete ripoffs of someone elses ideas.
6.Censoring stuff.
7. Shiny, mysteriously bright male plumbing. I don't care to see this.
8. People who pretend they like yuri or yaoi, but completely rip on it behind your back.
9. So-called fans way too young to understand or appericiate yaoi or yuri. They get all grossed out with the sex scenes and such. Why it says for adults only on the covers.
10. Pairings you never want to see ever!
11. Pairings with the father. Eww!!! xp
12. Fluffy sappy s**t.

ipanema The "no, no, please stop, not there" business, even if the ukes likes it and wants it is stupid to me. Can't the ukes ever just say "mmmm... yeah. I like that, right there baby, that's good?" gonk I completely agree with this. And I just remembered an episode of Ebichu: The Housekeeping Hamster that made fun of that very same thing. So it's not just in BL-works. I think it might be a Japanese thing. Along this line of thinking, I also can't stand ukes that seem to be completely disinterested in sex until the seme comes along and more or less 'turns them on'. However, of course, they are so reluctant even while engaging in sex. stare I mean, gods, how Victorian is that? People like having sex. People really like having sex with people they like/love. An uke can initiate sex just as easily as a seme and still end up on the bottom, if that's what you're worried about (Jack Twist from Brokeback Mountain proved that ^^;; wink . There is no 'on' switch either but people sometimes do need help getting in the mood.

Wow.
So, my main pet peeves have been covered already (stereotypical uke/seme, non-con, self-lubricating ukes, really really scary homophobic yaoi fangirls (the fact that that's even possible... just... wtf.))
I had no idea so many people were bugged by the "overly feminine uke" thing, actually. Lately the whole uke/seme dynamic has been pissing me off. The whole thing where even if the uke is the one pursuing, when it comes to sex it's all "this is embarrassing" and "no, sto-". evil Typical semes bug me too. A lot of them are just silent, cold, sex-fiends who have absolutely no expression when they're having sex. Just -_-
Another thing is WHY there has to always - or so it seems - even be set "seme" and "uke" roles. A little flexibility now and then wouldn't hurt. I do occasionally like some realism. rolleyes
Which is where the fact that there are like no condoms comes into play. It's... weird. This is not so much a pet peeve as it is a "...huh." (That one shot of Goh in Yellow 3? Made me way too happy xp .)
Though I will read just about anything... ninja I'm very picky about what I buy. And the stereotypes are pretty much everywhere, so I've learned to live to a certain degree.

My only major pet peeves would be:
-No story, all sex
-No sex, all story
Just mix it up a little, get some variety in there! I guess that also brings up the stereotypical seme/uke thing. I agree with the many people who have listed this as a pet peeve. I don't think I need to go over it again.

I don't have many pet-peeves as I'm pretty excepting of pretty much any and everything.
1) Grammatical errors, this is my main pet-peeve for anything that I see. I know I'm not perfect but when you post something that you want other people to read, then at least try and have it readable for others!
2) Self-Lubricating Ukes who just so happens to be ready for anything at a drop of a hat. The just doesn't happen in real life and I know fanfiction isn't real life but it should be based off a good deal of real life.
3) Everyone falling in love and then going straight to sex. I just don't see that happening of where they meet and then goes to boinking and supposedly there in love, that just doesn't happen nor work!!!!!!
4) When the guy(s) are so fem that you can't tell if its a boy or a girl, there should be something there that gives it off at first sight. Seeing them having little bumps that can pass as boobs doesn't help the matter either.

My biggest pet peeve is actually with the fangirls. I remember once I was hanging out with a friend of mine who made a comment about how much she loooooooooooooooooved Sasuke/Naruto. I said "That sounds like it might be cute!"
Oh boy, was THAT apparently the wrong thing to say!!
"MIGHT be cute?! EXCUSE ME?! ******** YOU YOU HOMOPHOBIC SON-OF-A- yadda yadda yadda..."
So long and short of it is, I hate the utterly obsessed fangirls who will threaten violence on anyone who doesn't promote their favorite pairings to the same ravenous, cult-like worshiping standards they set upon themselves. xp

The whole " seme + uke = <3 " thing kinda bugs me. Sure it can be cute depending on the story and the characters but, why can't it be someting like..seme + seme?? Or have the roles revesed continuously without changing the characters personalities too much? Now that's something I'f like to see happening more. 3nodding
My other peeve is over obbsessed fans. Like the girls who think their favorite paring is the best in the whole world and freak out in a foam-at-the-mouth-imma-get-j00-an'-j00-gonna-dieee manner. Then there are the over obbsessed fans of the straigh pairings who are so close minded they won't even glimpse at the most inncocent of shonen-ai pics.

Well, I read through about half of this and now I know others share some of the dislikes I do.
1) The whole non-con thing, for the obvious reasons.
2) Shota, which in my mind is an adult with anyone 14 or under. Maybe even fifteen, it just worries me. Although, since I like Loveless, I may be being a bit hypocritical. sweatdrop
3) For fanfiction, the girl-bashing. The Tea bashing in Yugioh seems to be especially vicious to me. I guess that's because she's the only permanent female character, though. The others just seem to float in and out at random.
4) The out of characterness, and the lack of ability to spell. And the incorrect use of "There" and "your" constantly. And the fact that a lot of them use "defiantly" when they mean "definitely". I mean, there's a reason we have dictionaries and spellcheck on the computer.
As for the girly ukes, I don't really mind it unless it's extreme. Like in "Alone in My King's Harem." Those should have been girls, or the books marketed as transgender romance.

I do not wish to jump to any conclusions just yet because i'm relatively new to yaoi. However I've read some yaoi fanfiction in which the personalities were completely eradicated. I would prefer if the portrayal of certain characters personalities would remain intact.

The whole story is driven by the fact that its seme x seme.

I'm not TOO particular about shounen-ai or yaoi, but... Here are some things that will bug me to a point...
1. Rape that doesn't involve the victim having trauma of SOME KIND afterwards... Damn, that's annoying. There needs to be resistance when this happens... and it CAN'T ALWAYS be rape, the seme needs to friggin smarten up and be a bit more gentlemanly eventually. I mean, SERIOUSLY, that's just abuse. This is my biggest one... though I WILL take exceptions.
2. Overly womanly ukes. Then they become annoying transvestites, in my mind. If the uke doesn't have a certain boyishness, then why not just make him a woman and show het smex?! gonk Again... there are a few exceptions.
3. Too many reluctant ukes... I actually think it's funnier if the seme is the reluctant, since he's more masculine, and has a sense of pride... but ends up taking the top anyway, on a dood, heh <3 and of course, Exceptions ever still.
4. BLURRED SEX!! Ahahahaha, I hate it! *gets hit with a brick* XP No exceptions!
... Well, that's me. and I am NOT a pervert ^_~
... Well, those are mine. Though, that's only if I'm being picky for some reason...
