Dusty had sunk deep in reflection and so didn't notice that someone was approaching him. All of a sudden, he was startled by a new spotted doe standing next to him asking about what was going on. Happy to get out of his own head for a minute, he tried to hide his surprise and addressed her politely. "Oh, hello. Well, unfortunately some kits got spooked and ran away from their mother." he cleared his throat before continuing. "We think they went into the grasses here based on a tiny path someone found." He held her gaze, ready to answer any more questions she may have.

My pleasure! (The whole fun of an ORP, lol.)

Sticks's keen gaze had picked up on the subtle cues that she had spooked the buck. Her expression twitched with slight amusement. She wasn't going to even try to hide the fact. "Little kits in the grass you say? Well that does sound like quite the ordeal," the doe mused. She liked babies well enough, but the idea of blindly searching for them in the darkness of the tall grass really didn't sound like a good time to her. Not to mention the rain was still coming down and didn't seem like it had any plans to stop.

The doe was going to make a remark about how there were an awful lot of rabbits on the job, how hadn't they found anything, but it was cut off by a crash followed shortly by a piercing scream. "What was that? Another monster?" she questioned, her ears flicking back, ready to bolt at a moment's notice. This one was far more stealthy than the last one, making it all the more terrifying.

Dusty was pretty sure the doe was finding his discomfort amusing. That expression couldn't be in reference to the situation with the kits. 'Yeah, I look like an idiot just standing here.' he thought abashedly 'And surely this cute doe thinks so too.' Out loud he went on "Yeah...there's already six rabbits on that trail. My friend Buzz over there is trying to inform the rest." another gulp "We have a burrow up ahead, not too far, if you're in need?" he asked but was then interrupted by a scream from the direction of the tree.

As Buzz was trying to rally the mother and group a loud crack sounded from the nearby tree. Its fall was immediately accompanied by a pained scream. He rushed over and upon arrival found a rabbit crawling away from the scene sporting a horrendous injury. The poor buck begged that the piece of smoking branch impaling him be removed. Buzz crouched over the wound, inspecting it before warning "Be as still as you can. I'll pull on three." while putting both paws gingerly on the section nearest to the thigh, wincing as the wood started burning him too. "1, 2" he gripped and yanked vertically before reaching three. A helpful trick his mom had pulled on him a few times as a boy in regards to splinters. 'One hell of splinter.' he thought sympathetically as he tossed the disgusting branch aside, bloodied and weird smelling.

Thunder had slowed as he approached the tree, awed by the flames and destruction. He stared at a smoldering limb raptly until a voice made him swivel an ear. Hopping closer was a dark, rainsoaked rabbit, and he was about to ask if she had screamed when he realized what she had asked.

"Yes I heard screaming!" He called back through the rumbling of thunder, then hopped closer to the doe to better hear her in the crashing storm.

"I think... a branch fell?" He eyed the unstable looking cracked tree, maybe they shouldn't be so close... He was not really scared of the storm, but the fire and smoke were making him a little nervous and he could tell the doe was on edge too. There were other rabbits moving around in the glow and they seemed to looking or doing something. The storm had given him an adrenaline rush but now he wasn't sure what to do with himself.

User Image Firefly tried his hardest not to whimper as he looked around in pained desperation. That was when he saw his would-be savior come hopping up. Honestly, he'd never felt appreciation for another rabbit more in his life than he did for this random stranger right now. He grit his teeth and nodded grimly when the black and white buck leaned over and grasped the branch, pulling it out with quite a degree of surprising skill, barely giving Firefly enough time to yelp before it was over. "Thank you... thank you from the bottom of my heart," Firefly gasped, and took deep, calming breaths as his leg began to throb. The hole bled sluggishly, but the fire really seemed to have done a good job at singeing the flesh to the point that he wouldn't be bleeding to death any time soon, but boy did it hurt.

Looking around, he glanced worriedly at the sky and then back at his savior, "I really appreciate what you've done. We have to keep moving onwards..." He paused, looked down at his leg, took a deep breath and readied himself. He had to keep moving, the shock would wear off sooner rather than later and everything would become harder. After another breath, the flame colored buck heaved himself to his three good legs, holding the back one up off the ground to the best of his ability. "That tunnel the kits went down is the safest place to go now... I'll just get picked off by something up here, and that doe still needs to find her kits". He paused and gave the stranger the best smile he could manage, "The name's Firefly. What can I call you?"

"You're welcome. I'm sure you'd have done the same." Buzz said while inspecting the leg again, checking for any remnants of splinters. There didn't seem to be any. He'd also seen less severe injuries that bled a lot more than this. It looked like the heat from the firey branch had sealed most of the wound somehow? Strange. It certainly smelled strange. He didn't have any experience with burn wounds but he hoped it would heal up alright. Only time would tell.

He could hardly believe the next few sentences that came from the buck before he introduced himself and asked a name in return. "Name's Buzz...Wait-You're really trying to rejoin the search party after this?" he asked incredulously. There was a fine line between heroic and plain stupid and he wasn't sure where to rate this. "I'm sorry to break this to you Firefly, but if you don't get down and resting immediately there's a fine chance of you dying."

Before Firefly could respond he continued on "My burrow is just a few minutes over that way." he gestured in the direction of the tunnels the buck had mentioned "We can search on our way but I really do insist we get you there-unless your place is closer?" Buzz had had enough of this chaotic search party. He wanted to reunite the kits with their mother too, but at a certain point you had to realize a lost cause. The amount of rabbits currently in danger on this mission was insane, and the one he was next to could very well die if they didn't make the right choice.

Sticks remained on edge for several more heartbeats. She didn't hear any more screams and nothing jumped out at her, so she relaxed slightly. Maybe someone else had hurt themself like she had earlier. Yeah, that was probably it, she assured herself. Some other fool was probably trying to steal the light and got punished for it. She gave a slight nod to herself as if to lock in her answer.

It took another moment for the doe to register that the other rabbit had spoken to her. "Six others you say? Well then they certainly don't need me. They can have their fun wandering around in the dark," she decided with a slight shake of her head. "Your burrow? No, no, I don't need that. I just left mine. I saw the light over here by the tree and I had to know what it was."

That scream sent chills through Dusty's spine, affirming his belief that it was stupidly dangerous to remain here any longer. He'd been soaked for too long now and felt close to the shivering point. Not to mention it had grown rapidly darker and pretty soon he wouldn't be able to see at all. It was time to call it. The doe looked nearly unphased by the scream they'd just heard and pretty calm about the whole situation in general. She must have nerves of stone. When hearing her plan to leave and the reasons why, he had to respect her logic. He was reaching the same conclusion as well but judging by the state of his fur and hers she'd come to that decision a LOT quicker. An interesting lady, to be sure.

"Well, goodbye and good luck. Perhaps we'll meet again." he bade her farewell and headed in the direction he'd seen Buzz running, towards the scream of course. There were predators that liked to hunt at night, owls, coyotes, just what this evening needed! Dusty felt inclined to tell his friend he'd be heading back to avoid any worries of whereabouts but then after that, he was out of here. His mind was made up. When he caught up he saw Buzz tossing a bloody branch aside and speaking to the rabbit he pulled it from. He listened to the conversation that followed and was relieved to hear the destination. By the looks of it they'd be helping someone so at least this venture wasn't an entire waste.

User Image Firefly sighed with resignation, the stranger was right, but he wished he wasn't. The fiery rabbit was an adventurous buck, and he wanted to be a part of something bigger than himself, but it seemed that this wasn't the day that would come to be. "Thank you Buzz... you're right. I don't like it, but you're right," he sighed again and conceded, "If your burrow is close, I think that might be a good idea. I... don't really have a place at the moment". There was a bit of pride and a bit of sadness to that statement. Not many rabbits could get away with living burrowless, but also such a life was generally a lonely one. He was looking for a place to settle, but in his mind's eye it was with other creative buns such as himself, just dabbling in the arts, whiling the days away.

He limped a little closer to Buzz, "Please... lead the way. We'll need to get wherever we are going before the shock wears off and I really start feeling this..." He paused and looked over as a new rabbit hopped around the tree, "Haroo..." Firefly called weakly, his ability to react to new situations lessening as the extent of the injury began to weigh on him.

Rain poured onto the tree, extinguishing most of the flames. Mama rabbit stared out at the grasses, as if she was willing her kits to return to her. The storm seemed to be moving off, but was that for the best?

Rabbits are still welcome to join at this stage! This thunderstorm is moving off, with occasional lightning and thunder. The rain is increasing in intensity. Much of the burning tree has been extinguished, but there may still be the odd hot spot.

If your rabbit has approached the tree they may be able to see mama rabbit. If your rabbit would like to interact with her ensure they are in a position where this is possible.

If you're trying to talk to this new rabbit please add the additional footer to your post.

The loud crashing of the tree strike had sent Zippy racing back to her father in a hurry. But now instead of finding shelter in the tall grass, they were going to go investigate the boom fires? Shaking her head she followed along, she could not see ahead well due to being so small, but she was pretty sure this was dangerous.

The rain grew worse and it was pretty annoying, it was ruining their whole day, their whole LIVES. Zippy pouted and stomped tiny paws in every puddle. Finally she saw some light ahead and brightened. With a shake, she splattered rain water everywhere, then darted forward into the area by the tree with many other rabbits around.

She spotted a very sad and upset bunny that seemed to be the one everyone was talking to, maybe she had been screaming? Zippy hopped forward to talk to her in a tiny excited voice.

"Hi, I'm Zippy! Why are you so sad? Were you screaming? What happened? Did the light booms break your home? This is a BIG TREE! Are you ok?" She only stopped to catch her breath and prepare to pummel the mother rabbit with more questions and insights.

Pippin still had a death grip on the darker buck, but as the thunder and lightning began to ease, it seemed his racing heart did too.

Except now it was just horridly heavy rain.

Eclipse grumbled a little under his breath, dragging the paler buck with him. He had no idea where they were actually going. Only that there had been some commotion this way. And he'd caught glimpses of other rabbits heading in this direction. So maybe there was shelter? Like by that strange tree.... oh.

The tree wasn't supposed to be laying like that.

"W-What... happened?" Pippin gasped, not sure if they should go over there. But he was wet and, frankly, had enough of this day thank you!

"No idea. I just thought there was shelter..." Still, the two got closer. There was definitely a lot of commotion going on around there.

Spotting a frantic looking doe, Pippin hopped closer. "Uh, begging your pardon, but what happened here?"

A shiver raced down the doe's back as she tried to shake herself free of the cold and rain. But it was getting heavier. Thunder still crashed and lightning lit up the sky, but did it seem to be getting more distant? She wiped at her face with her paws before looking back at the buck she'd found.

"I was too far to see what happened. Except that the tree was on fire?" Rain Drop scrunched her face up, little heart still pounding. But that scream... it still pulled at her. "I... want to make sure no one is hurt." She said, like she was trying to convince herself. But her motherly instinct was kicking in and she laid a paw gently against the buck's.

"We should go see what the others have found." She said with a little more courage, lightly tugging at the grey bun to get him moving before she hopped off.

A distraught doe caught her attention immediately, as well as those that seemed to be searching for something?

"Oh heavens! Are you alright?" Rain Drop asked of the poor doe that seemed to have been hurt recently.

Mama rabbit took a step towards the little kit, before realizing it wasn't one her missing babies. She let out a long sob. "My kits are missing! Please, help me find them? They were here and then the tree got hit and now I can't find them ... One rabbit found footprints leading away from the tree ... But why would they just run off like that!" She was clearly beside herself.

Buzz was pleased to hear Firefly change his mind without argument. The buck was heroic after all, not stupid, he decided. It was dark enough he could hardly see and the rain was picking up. He'd never been this wet for this long and was relieved to be heading back. Not being able to find the missing kits was extremely regretful but not for a lack of trying. And who knows, maybe they'd still get lucky and run into them on their way back.

"Alright, this way. Keep your eyes focused on your footing and we'll watch out for signs of the kits." he hopped over to the tunnel they'd originally come in from and added "Speak up if the pace is too fast." Buzz started making his way through the trail with Firefly behind and Dusty bringing up the rear. He took it slow and moved aside any loose, sharp rocks that were in the path. There weren't any tiny paw prints so far but he'd keep looking the whole way, just in case.

User Image
Dusty followed without interjecting anything. He was exhausted and ready for this nightmare to be over. Firefly was the name of this new buck if he'd heard correctly, but he didn't try to introduce himself. The guy had enough to focus on without bugging him with pleasantries and he couldn't imagine the pain he must be in. There'd be time for all that later in safe, dry conditions. He was doubtful they'd be seeing any signs of the kits with it being as dark as it was, but he was still willing to try. Buzz appeared to be scouring the ground so he focused his efforts on the grasses instead. Every once in a while standing tall on his hind legs to get a better look around into other sections of tunnels they weren't going in.
