Stress, anxiety and depression are going up for teenagers, adults and children alike. The only reason it seems to affect teenagers so much more is, the often mentioned, hormones! Think of how you feel when you haven't eaten, are tired or have PMS, any little trigger feels like the end of the world. Then you get over it and can laugh it off (which is how I feel about my own teenage-hood, long past, thank god).

All of those pressures that everybody's mentioned definitely make the process much harder, and I don't want to sound annoying or ignorant, but having sub-cultures that thrive on depression (such as Emo and Goth - though this is not true for all scenesters) only help make the depression worse by dwelling on it (I know, I did it). It sounds boring, but all those preppy and jocky kids seem so happy all the time (although I'm sure they're not) because they get lots of exercise(!!!), which is often recommended by doctors for those who get depressed but don't suffer from clinical depression. I guess the point of my post is that chances are you'll get over it once you move on to adult-hood and start having to worry about other things such as money and careers. And these things are way more frightening, believe you me!

I actually don't really feel the affects of PMS like some people do, thankfully.

I think one of the main things is that this is when life is really beginning for teens. Obviously, they've been alive for at least 13 years, but it's different because they're learning new emotions. We don't really get a sense of what love and hate are. We don't really learn what true camaraderie is. ...And it's the teen years that allow us to experience these things for the first time. With all new things it can be difficult to accept at first and hard to deal with. Although the experiences we encounter might bear some similarities, they're all different. One experience doesn't necessarily make the next any easier, but we're able to learn from them. I admit that I had some tough times as a teen, and I feel I STILL have some difficult encounters and decisions to make, but it's all part of the growing process.

I think part of what makes life a little more difficult for teens also is that the part of their brains that allows them to make well thought-out decisions doesn't fully develop until the age of 18; Many of them do things on impulse. It makes sense, because I did make some decisions without thinking about the consequences...and even though I felt I was fully capable of making my own decisions, it would have helped a bit if I had taken the time out to realize the brevity of my actions.

They are old enough that parents will dump on them many adult responsabilities, but those same parents will often times still treat them like they are little kids on many other subjects.

Wow i completely agree with you there. A good example is my parents, (they are great but as parents they make mistakes) their mistake is over protecting me, yes they gave me a whole bunch of chores, and gave me many adult responsibilities, but the problem was that they still treated me and considered me to be a kid, they didnt even give me the talk or anything adult related I swear even now they dont let me watch adult movies and yesterday i was watching a movie with my bro and in a scene a guy was raping a woman and because im not use to seeing that on tv my reflexes made me jump. and keeping me away from everything kinda screwed me up a bit. ok let me stop for a min because im getting out of topic, but yes treating a teenange like a kid does make them depressed it happend to me, and it is safe to say that i was depressed for about 3 years, paid it no mind and then everything came back to me.

Between hormones and media I think depression has become acceptable and kind of stylish, so I don't think teenagers are depressed as much as over reacting or trying to get attention and fit in

uchihamassacre
IN MY OPINION
These are the causes in order:
1. HORMONES: every teen goes through a process of pain, change, and discovery. No person is saved from it.
2. SCHOOL GRADES: every parent wants his or her kid to be smart. Most kids can't reach those set up goals.
3. FITTING IN: We all want to seem normal. Being a teen, it's extremely hard to be normal.
4. FAMILY ISSUES: Violent families, divorcion, orphans, unwanted babies, deaths, set-up goals, and strict parents or families cause many disturbations in early lives.
5. SOCIAL CLASSES: The difference of being rich and poor. I don't think I need to explain.
6. SOCIAL CULTURES: The hatred in between different social groups. We all know what that is.
Sorry if I have spelled something wrong.

good list.

I dunno tho, I started a srange depression (more like raw emptiness) abruptly. Probably when I was about 10, just snapped. Lost the normal happy, havent gotten back yet.

As for hormones: Those definitely arent helping. I've got a shorter temper, but still dont have trouble holdin in any or all emotion

grades: I'm *ok* in those, usually lax

fitting in: In the last 8 or so years, I have made about 2 friends. Everywhere else, I am mostly ignored. I'm used to it. altho on Gaia I do say alot of strange things

family issues: nope, just fine

social classes: somewhere, somehow theres a chump waiting for me to mooch off of it mrgreen Seriously tho, still not really an issue

social cultures: im not in any group and mostly only see 1 friend. It doesnt really affect me.

Theres got to be more, often its an irrational depression, and that angers me that I've fallen to it, but then I have a reason to be frustrated and depressed, so I'm no longer depressed about that, Then angry again that I ever fel to it... burning_eyes ARRRRRGHHHHh my head hurts now burning_eyes

While I see a lot of reasons for cause of depression, I fail to see anything medically related. I didn't read every single post so I may be mistaken.

What I'm talking about is clinical depression, which can be caused by a wide range of factors which include certain biochemistry imbalances in the brain. I've had this for the last 13 years roughly. I'm depressed a lot and there is, quite literally, nothing I can do about it save bite my lip and deal with it.

That can put a lot of stress on a person though as it can be exceedingly difficult to function normally, and you can't find out why.

To be honest, for the most part the numbers statistically are most likely not any different from years ago in terms of ratio. The population is considerably larger compared to the 1950's, so of course the number of people affected has gone up accordingly. But with communication and information exchange so much easier to do now, it's easier to see that the problem exists in various things in the news.

I mean, look at the 50's. You had your rebels, your hooligans, your guys who were obsessed with being the 'coolest' and doing whatever it takes to reach such a status, including risking death. Is it any different from the 'punks' and 'emos' of today, besides the fact we have more of them because of the larger population?

its because of all the responsibilities, like school/grades so that u wont get rejected by all d universities that u apply to, social status which is sometimes considered 2 be very important, relationships with friends and love life, which is d most painful 1 of all.

mad The reason why teenagers are depressed these days is because they don't go to church to get in the spirit!

I sincerely doubt the reason teenagers are depressed is because they don't go to church. There are a lot of religions where you don't need to go to a particular church so to speak, and a lot of those people are fine.

I know a lot of depressed people that go to church as well, another reason why your statement is flawed. Maybe you can explain yourself better than that to back up your claim?

I'm just going into my teens and i don't see why they are so depressed Hormones? maybe but that seems to be the easy answer to every thing.
maybe its just the fact that the first actually depressed people got more attention than other non-depressed teenagers and in a desperate act of attention seeking behavior and that forced a slight majority of depressed over normal and then peer pressure came in and more turned depressed to fit in and slowely we the non depressed became the odd ones out

church has nothing to do with it. I've known more people (very deep thinkers) who've gotten depressed because god seems to be absent no matter how much they pray or attend church. and on the flip side, many atheists and christians who simply dont go to church for whatever reason who are perfectly happy.

i agree w/ that, but not all people are christian either
