Ano, somewhere I think I read that sticking out your pinky or thumb indicates your talking about someone's girlfriend/boyfriend or something. sweatdrop I barely speak japanese so if someone wants to help a pathetic otaku..? emo

yeah I read that too heheh.... what I read was if you're talking about your boyfriend you stick your thumb out or if you're talking about your girlfriend you stick your pinky out... but I think it is done in only a joking manner

Quote:
kun-used after boy's names to express familiarty or endearment. Also used by men among friends, or when addressing some one of a lower status.
Chan:Used to express endearment, mostly towards girls. Used among pets, little boys, and among lovers. Sence of childish cuteness.

I've heard that the "kun" suffix is added just to boys' names isn't true . It's because "kun" is a bit um....higher than "chan" , because the women are lower in the social hierarchy than men and therefore , get less respect (Well at least in the past...) . Nowadays "kun" can also be added to girls' names , as they aren't considered lower than men now (I think) .

Please correct me if I'm wrong (I have the horrible feeling that I am) .

I read that it is unlucky to cut your nails at night and that the number 4 is also very unlucky because it sounds like the word for death, shi. Some hospitals and hotels even skip room number 4. It's also bad luck to sleep facing north.
In giving gifts, the more expensive the gift, the better.

I disagree with this last statement. Techincally you're suppose to give gifts according to the relationship.

Also, often people who are given gifts are expected to reciprocate with a gift of equal or greater value. Therefore, it's considered rude to give an expensive gift, because the person you gave it to is going to have to give you something even more extravagant/expensive. It can be hard on the wallet.

Ah , and I also forgot to add , -chan can also be added to boy's names , usually used for young (cute) boys .

Anyways , I also wanted to add that there's a Wikipedia article on customs and etiquette of Japan . It can be found here . Happy reading =)

That could be true. I'm from asia and I attended high school there. Our classes lasted from 7am to 5pm most superior sections had classes till 7pm and we don't do electives.
