yeah, that sucks about the adoption. it can be pretty hard to deal with landlords when it comes to pets.
i remember when i was apartment-hunting last summer. there's a huge housing shortage in my town because people love purchasing vacation homes here. and a lot of apartment complexes are not pet-friendly. fortunately, i was able to get a unit at the only complex i know that allows pets.
i also had some pet issues with my previous landlord. his house stinks like there's no tomorrow because their dogs poop in the backyard, are never bathed, and they don't clean. unfortunately, since i lived in the basement, the stench would drift down. when i told them i was moving out and they started showing the apartment to prospective tenants, prospective tenants remarked about the stench in the apartment. and my landlord said the stench is due to my cats x_x.
until now i didn't have the heart to tell him that no, it's not my cats, it's that his house stinks.

Yeah, the shelter actually called the landlord and they said 'no'. If I knew all kinds of people who had cats, I'd borrow them all and keep them here for a week just to piss off the landlord. Of course, this would be after I found a new place to live.
The lack of pet friendly apartment buildings is what landed us here, unfortunately. We have an appointment in a half hour to go check out an apartment that allows pets though, so hopefully it's nice. They asked how many cats we had and said 'no problem' when we said 3. ^^
Stink-wise, this place pisses me off about that too. Someone complains about the cat smell, the landlord is right there barring up our door. Meanwhile, the entire bottom floor smells like weed and they do s**t all about it.

mean landlords mad . the new apartment you mentioned sounds promising. i hope it works out for you.
speaking of which, does anybody know what to do about cats who are finicky eaters? it looks like after every few months or so, grumbles gets tired of her cat food and does not eat for a few weeks. of course, she loses a lot of weight. i've taken her to the vet during one of these phases and they couldn't find anything wrong with her.
she would resume eating the same food later. but i'm very concerned that she will get seriously ill because of her crash diets.
she entered yet another crash diet phase last week. last night i gave her some of my dinner (rice and tuna and eggs) and she ate a good deal. but she still refuses to touch her cat food. my guess is that she just demands variety x_x.
anyway, do y'all rotate the types of cat food that you serve? because i always feed my cats the original science diet dry food and the science diet gourmet beef wet food. i really never had problems with these until grumbles started going on her crash diets.

Whenever I have a pet that doesn't want to eat, I take some treats or wet food and mix a small amount of it with normal food. They usually eat the whole thing.

I can't believe this. The landlord told us that if we give him the damage deposit, he'd hold the apartment for us since we have to give a months notice here. So, we call him back later to talk to him about giving him the money, and he tells us that a couple more people came to see the place and since they can move in March 1st, we can only have the apartment if they don't want it.
I am so not impressed with this.
On the topic of food, mine all eat the same thing and have since they were kittens. They never seem to get tired of it.

Wow Blue, that sucks. I hope you get the apartment, though if the landlords are going to be like that, maybe you don't want it any more... who knows what other kind of crap they might try to pull on you.
cardi: D: That's really bad. It's pretty important that cats eat every day, or they can develop hepatic lipidosis, which can be life threatening, or at the very least, difficult and expensive to treat.
My girls get a pretty wide variety of meats, so they usually eat two different types of meals a day. If they decide to be picky, I'll try them on different things until they eat, so I make sure they get at least one meal into their tummies a day.
If she has a favourite flavour or treat, like liver or a gravy or commercial treats, you might try sprinkling some of that on her food to make it more tempting.
Hand feeding also seems to work sometimes, when cats are being fussy.
If she likes variety it would probably be a good idea to keep a variety of canned food on hand, in different flavours and maybe different brands.

thanks everybody. it looks like i have to keep trying with a variety of different food until grumbles finds something she likes. when she gets into her crash diets, she wouldn't eat even her favorite treats (tuna water and bonito flakes). she seems to respond to rice, though.

rawr. it appears that my little grumbling girl finally decided that tuna--not rice--is good enough for her... even though she refused to eat it a few days ago. once it's safe enough for me to drive again (it's been snowing here like there's no tomorrow), i'ma haul my butt to the pet store and get a variety of canned food for grumbles.
mitts, on the other hand, prefers the same food day in and day out. how could two creatures that look alike be so different? x_x

That's the wonderful thing about cats... they're just like little humans; everyone is unique and different... they're just cuter and more pleasant to be around than most people.
I hope you can keep her eating. I really wish cats wouldn't be difficult with their food.

Damnit, I guess I'm calling the vet tomorrow to see if I can get an appointment. Violet's had a runny eye since I got her and she's been on BNP ointment twice to no effect, but I wasn't too worried cause it was just runny and not bothering her. We'll it's gone from runny to having a mucousy discharge and the white of her eye and her third eyelid are looking rather red today. sad

hee hee, i agree about cats being more pleasant to be around with compared to some humans *pets teh napping mitts*.
hurrah, grumbles ate some of the regular dry food, wet food, and treats today. but just to be safe, i got a handful of various flavors and brands of wet food just in case she gets into her finicky mood again.
uh-oh, i hope violet's eye is okay and that there are no scratches on it.

I wish I could help :( The closest thing to this I can think of that either of my cats went through was Pink Eye went they were kittens.
I agree with Cardi. Let's hope it isn't anything too serious... ;-;

Thanks for your concern guys. I'm not too worried about it - she's squinting a little in that eye, but not rubbing or scratching at it, and she's still running around like a little terror, so I don't think it's bothering her all that much. I got an appointment with the vet for this afternoon, so I'll know soon enough.
