Masuyo would have faint inclinations from her mano y mano brawl with her would-be assassin the night before; but after her close (and unfortunately thorough) examination of the other boy, she would notice something:
Neither one of them had any visible signs of being tainted. They had scars that implicated them as having part in maho, but that's it. An Intelligence/Lore: Maho or Intelligence/Spellcraft (Maho) roll would tell Masuyo more. Would you like to know more?
Anyone who beat a TN 15 of the above rolls would realize the same thing, and would be entitled to the same follow-up roll.

Following the thought process, Masuyo selected the highlighted "More?"
...and came up empty.

Something about bugs and cows?
Wait, that has nothing to do with this. Focus, Masuyo, focus!

"Kitsuki-san, think of this. By the wording of their letter, it's all or nothing. Now, while I'm faintly curious as to why they think we have room to maneuver, but I've read their letter to you exactly. You may as well be prepared to fight."
Kojiro decided to walk with her at least, if she wasn't slowing down. He'd think of something before now and the gate, he hoped.

Oh no he did not just- ..red. It was very hard to make a mountain move, but when it did its wrath could crush anything that dared stand in its way. It was always dangerous to incite such things from a Shugenja, especially in such a place as this. The kami could easily sense the distress of their priestess, and even Fubuki was starting to growl again. And all that simply because he had the gall to speak to her after what he'd done. When she actually paid attention to his words her anger dissipated ever so slightly, replaced by confusion. Even if she wasn't armed, had she not just said she was more dangerous unarmed? Had she not proven that at least twice in their brief time together? With a fierce glare she reached for her swords and yanked them free-
...of her obi. Not drawn at all, in fact. With mighty defiance she shoved her daisho at him at continued marching off in silence.

Kojiro merely put the blades next to Asako Shisui's own set. He really wished he could actually get sleep. Instead, he prepared himself for what he viewed as inevitable.

Kagae and Kojiro stay behind to watch the prisoners prisoner and corpse. Masuyo and Fubuki make their way to the eastern gate, to pre-empt their apparent rival in these endeavors. It only takes a handful of minutes to make it there, though it is uncertain when this Matsusuke fellow would have started keeping track of the time. The shugenja + fox would make it to the gate unimpeded. Beyond the gate was... Quote: To your left, eastward, you can see large rock outcroppings and an occasional wilted tree here and there. The place seems somewhat barren - not inhospitable, but nowhere people could live on their own unassisted for an extended period of time. To the north was a sharp incline as the mountain ascended. Masuyo, please give me a TN 15 Perception/Investigation (Notice) check.

Storming off in righteous indignation was satisfying in a way. It didn't exactly make her feel better (in fact, a few minutes alone really allowed the implication of it all to sink in rather depressingly), but at the very least it was time enough to calm herself. Which was good, considering, since she was here she may as well start scouting and getting a better idea of the situation before the enemy had time to set up (assuming they hadn't already, but that was a good part of scouting).

Masuyo, along the craggy incline north of the gate, there was a single robed individual, a man too far away to distinguish, dressed similarly to the two you had thus far apprehended. He was just sitting there, a bow laying across his lap.
He was a good distance up, enough to make him safe from any melee attacks; however, his defense against ranged attacks was negligible.
He would raise a hand to his forehead to block out the sun and look in your general direction as you notice him. But, beyond that, he takes no action, and just sits there.

After a bit of looking around she found herself unable to devise and sort of advantage from the area. Hardly a surprise considering Warfare wasn't exactly her area of expertise.. nor diplomacy for that matter. Coming from a long line of observers who preferred not to act. With the other two due to arrive soon and this 'Matsusuke' not far behind, she figured she may as well get the ball rolling before it all fell apart.
She approached the incline cautiously, arms out to show that she was well and truly unarmed. Realizing that the man would likely be extremely shifty, she stopped as soon as she was within loud conversation distance and called out, "You bored yet?"

The man would visibly shrug, resting his cheek on one hand. His physical features were hard to make out from a number of elements, but his body language indicated that Masuyo's assumption was likely correct.
"'M jus' here to make sure th' trapper of yer group doesn't slink about settin' snares 'nd junk for the Boss. You ain't she, right?"
Etiquette of 11 vs TN 15 to do the same to you.
Apparently, neither one of you are gifted speakers.
