I was living with my dad at the time when I graduated high school and his one rule was that I was allowed to stay there as long as I continued to go to school. I wanted to take a small break right after highschool and get a job so that I could save up money and pay my own way (I have issues with gov. money...). But no dad made me apply for the grants that let me go to school. Me being the vindictive person that I am failed a majority of my classes (I passed all my bio and health classes because for me it's nearly impossible to fail them...) and flunk out of the community college I was going to.
So I had to move out. ANd of couse I find out later that my dad had only held that standard of goign to school on me. One brother never bothered to attend a single college class and the other just dropped out. Ugh.

[third edit of this]
Aura, I hope I read your last post wrong.
Are you meaning to say grants are government hand outs? Because if you are, I'm VERY VERY offended. And I will argue mercilessly the point. I'm hoping I just misread your post.
Also, I kind of was bothered that you seem to resent your father for having a standard of education for you. I think parents set the bar because they care sometimes and you ought to appreciate it. Some of us don't have living fathers, don't know who they are, or have dead beat dads. Please, take a moment to appreciate what you have.

I hope y'all don't resent me for this...
I'm a 21-year-old senior at the University of Southern California majoring in Print Journalism through the Annenberg School for Communication and minoring in International Relations (which I not-so-lovingly call "Irrational Reasoning") through the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. I'm a sportswriter (it's not all-that-hard to find my clips if you search for them) whose ultimate goal is to be the USC beat writer for the Los Angeles Times or the Los Angeles Daily News, or a Los Angeles-based correspondent for Sports Illustrated.
This may sound impressive, but I'm not Miss Perfect. After years of illness and recovery, my father died (in journalism, it's engrained into us not to use euphemisms) in late November of 2005, the day of my first final. Since, I have taken five incompletes, and my lack of motivation has prompted me to do nothing to get them taken care of for over a year, and so they currently stand as fails on my transcript. I'm hoping to get it resolved though. I'm just trying to restore my life back to what it was before, and hopefully I'll go from there.
I know some of y'all have shunned college, but I encourage you not to look at it as a societal institution, rather as an opportunity for self-improvement and self-enlightenment. In college, one should explore a topic in which one is interested. In my experience, I excel in courses about subjects I enjoy, such as sportswriting (whereas I procrastinate and sulk in regards to media law, in which I have a midterm tomorrow, so I shouldn't be on Gaia anyway). I would definitely recommend those who are interested in returning to do so, as it will not only bring about learning opportunities but also a sense of accomplishment. And that is one of the best feelings in the world.
I'm not saying college is the end-all. Sometimes, we find ourselves in a trade we truly enjoy. Certain skills college simply cannot teach. For some, perhaps circumstances have led away from so-called higher learning, and for that, no one should be ashamed. However, if there are opportunities to better one's self, whether by attending college or entering into a career (that doesn't require college), I don't see any reason why one shouldn't take the chance, unless there are extenuating issues. Even so, perserverance can be ultimately rewarding.

I'm a junior in college, majoring in Anthropology. It's really kind of a WTF major but quite useful- people skills galore, and interviewers love people who can have cultural relativity. I work at the technology help desk at my college, and I'm kind of my manager's assistant. I look after the other employees, order all the supplies, and deal with scheduling problems. I love my work, except for all the people with graduate degrees who don't know what a return key is (HOW????) and the law students who think the world revolves around them. I hope to be an administrative assistant, preferably in a relaxed sort of company where I can be myself.. I'm kind of odd, and have a few piercings and am getting the first of most likely many tattoos this week.
That's not my real dream though... my dream is to start a craft business. I love making things more than anything. I crochet, knit, sew, bind books, work with clay, decoupage, scrapbook, make ATCs, make jewelry... you name it, I've either done it or plan on doing it. My ideal would be for my fiance to work full time and I would stay home and craft (and of course, any housewifely duties. I love cooking! biggrin ) My fiance is going into Robotics so my dream might become reality someday. I hope. We don't plan on ever having children, so we'll need less money than most families... though cats can be pretty expensive too! xd

Bakura Amane Well, I'm proud to say that I am an Audio-Visual Technician (AV-Tech) which is just a fancy word for saying I troubleshoot computers for doctors, guests, etc. that don't know what they're doing on a computer while at the University of Kansas Medical Center and hospital (or KUMC for short). I also set up the equipment for them in classrooms and unlock and lock the classrooms. I found this job while one day home sick as a cashier. I wanted to do something closer to filmmaking (my long-term and dream occupation). I found this and have beend doing it happily for one week! I'm so happy to have finally gotten it and now I'm having fun! This is also why I haven't been on Gaia or on the internet at all much this past week. Anyway, that's me! Well, this ^ WAS my job; anyway I'm back as a cashier again, but I don't think I'll be staying long because this is only temporary until Dad can work again or until I get out of college/university this time around as I'm now studying to be an animator. 3nodding
