Marcus tucked his knife away when he was sure that Kate was headed his way. "It's me. Make sure nobody's watching, then follow me. I know a place where we can talk for a while that's a little more private," he said quietly, pushing aside some of the brush to allow her in easier. There was a clearing not far from here that only he really knew much about. Most people avoided because of a rumor about a wolf pack that often slept there. A rumor that Marcus started.

Kate saw the maid walk back inside before following Marcus into the bushes. It'd probably be a while before anyone noticed that she was gone. Kate nodded to Marcus and said, "Alright, but I can't stay long. I'll need to be back to the garden before someone notices I'm gone or they'll search for me and if they find us talking they'll be quite upset. It would cause a bunch of trouble."

Marcus nodded, jogging lightly to the clearing. It wasn't far, and there were some fairly large rocks near a stream in the center that provided adequate seating. "How are you holding up? Looks like you've had a trying day." He pulled his bag around in front of him, opening it before he set it down. The food within was clearly visible.

Kate looked at Marcus calmly before sighing softly. "I'm fine. A little tired, but it'll be ok. They're going to have a ceremony for my parents two days from now. And it's been decided that on my 16th birthday I'll take over in my parents place. It's only half a year before I turn 16. No more going out and exploring the woods I guess." Kate said at a half attempt to make a joke. Kate sighed once again before looking down at her hands.

Marcus put an arm across Kate's shoulders with a frown. "Are you sure that's the life you want? Most people here won't see you as a ruler, at least, not in the way they saw your father. He was well respected, until he disappeared." Though Marcus asked, he had no idea what he could offer as an alternative. He couldn't very well bring the girl home and tell his father they had to hide her from the royal guard. Or... could he?

Kate looked at Marcus before crossing her arms. "No, I don't want this life. Who would? My parents are dead and I'm expected to deal with everything calmly. I'm not going to have any freedom and people will be wait to blame me the second I do anything the tiniest bit wrong, but I don't think I really have a choice. No one else who would take over rule would be a good choice. Most of them are greedy and not very kind. I- I don't know what I'm supposed to do." Kate said quietly.

Marcus frowned. She was right. She couldn't exactly just run away. At least, not on her own. "Kate... I might have an idea. Maybe. I'm not entirely sure how you're going to feel about it though. Oh well. Can't hurt to try. I hope." Realizing that he was babbling, Marcus sighed and calmed himself before continuing. "I could help you disappear. There are maybe four people in the village who knows where the farm is, and none of them would give us up, even if they knew you were there. It's hidden by the forest, and isolated from the road."

Kate looked at Marcus for a little bit before putting her head down. Running away sounded great to her. She really wanted to, but what would happen to the rule of this land? What would happen if someone terrible was put in charge? It would mean the suffering of everyone. Maybe it would be better if only she had to suffer. Plus if they did get caught, Marcus would get into huge trouble. "I don't know... I mean, what happens if they do catch us? I'd get yelled at, but you'd be tried for treason. And if someone comes in my place that's a horrible person it'd be all my fault. I just... I just don't know." Kate said softly.

"Do you really think the townspeople would just lie down and take it quietly if someone cruel was out in charge? Someone not fit to lead? My father told me how your great-grandfather rose to power here. Not through bloodlines, but by leading a revolt. And... as for getting caught... We'll just have to avoid that, won't we? I could be tried for treason if somebody found us out here and decided they didn't like me." His mini-rant finished, Marcus patted her back in a reassuring way. "I won't tell you everything will be okay if you run away, but I'll do my best to make that happen."

Kate looked down for a while, not speaking. All of the possible scenarios ran through her head. Part of her felt obligated to stay, but another part demanded that for once in her life she actually be able to take control of her own life and do what she wanted. Kate looked up to Marcus before saying, "Alright. I want to run away with you, my only friend." Kate smiled softly and hoped that her worry and uncertainty wasn't clear in her eyes.

Marcus sat in silence for a moment, not expecting the whole 'only friend' thing. Soon though, he recovered. Nodding, he stood, offering a hand to help Kate up. "Then we should go. The sooner we slip away, the better. If you're worried about traveling through the woods at night, then just stay close or hold my hand or something. I know this place better than I know my father's face. There will be no trouble in getting to the farm."
