At the mention of his younger sibling, Aesa sat bolt upright, laying a hand on Ace's chest for balance when she would have toppled over. "Alex! Ace will she be alright on her own - she's so small!" She was mentally berating herself for forgetting about the child, no matter how convoluted the evening had become. The child was exceedingly mature for her tender age but to them to not return with not so much as a note - what must she be thinking right now? She didn't give Ace time to answer her original question before she went on to ramble, "I will go go back right now. Stay in bed and rest." Aesa began to push off Ace's body, fully intent on finding her way back to their home in the woods to secure the child's wellbeing.

"Aesa, Aesa! Relax," Ace said wrapping a strong arm around her small waist pulling her back down onto the bed as she tried to get up and flee back to her home. "She's been left alone for a while. She'll be here in the morning, relax. I promise she'll be fine," he said softly with his voice straining holding her. He had vanished for weeks before and she knew to go to Marri's home and stay there until he came to get her. They'd been over this a million times and wasn't worried about it at all.

Aesa struggled at first, though she was still mindful of his weakened state and took pains not to elbow him. As he explained the plan he and Alex apparently had in place for just such eventualities she settled down and looked up at him from within the crook of his arm. Well of course he would have thought of a similar scenario - hadn't she just been thinking about how careful he was with Alex? Slowly a blush spread across her cheeks, prompted by both her rash actions - she wouldn't have even known how to get back to his house in the first place - as well as the fact that she was half lying on his exposed skin.

Darting her eyes to look up at the ceiling she refused to apologize yet again as it seemed to be a trend for her these last couple days. She couldn't, however, simply close her eyes and wish the embarrassment away so she simply carried on as though nothing had happened. "Oh. Well I'm glad to see you had a plan in place. Hmm. Have you killed many men Ace?" She winced knowing that was not a well timed question but laying him and talking so openly she felt she had to know more about this man's character.

Ace sighed feeling her finally relax making his body thankful for no longer being strained even if she was smaller than him. He loosened up his grip but he still held her looking at her quietly until she saw her bush. At this he closed his eyes and looked away blushing a little as he took his hand away and just used his arms to keep himself propped up as he looked at her. When he looked down though, he realized why she was blushing and he chuckled a little bit. He looked at her and bit his lip at her next question though. He rubbed his eyes and then looked at a few of his scars thinking about how to answer it.

"Yes and no," he finally said shrugging. "I have been proved to kill one, but I've killed a lot more, yes. I have no idea how many I've killed but I try to keep myself from doing so the best I can. Some times though, I have to keep someone else safe looking." He looked at her quietly rubbing the largest scar on his chest. He laid down on the bed quietly and closed his eyes rubbing them before just resting one arm over his gut before looking up at her again softly with curious, bright eyes.

Aesa's face heated further at his quiet chuckle, it being all the worse for her not fully understanding ther reason behind his mirth. While she processed what his confessions of murder she carefully examined his words, watching him now instead of the ceiling. When he finally opened his eyes again and met her stare she nodded to him and attempted to convey his limited understanding of his situation. "There's no shame in protecting another, even when force is necessary. I've never done so but I know that it will be asked of me in the future when I come fully into my rank." Here she shifted futher into the bed, as though she was making herself more comfortable. In truth she was biding a few precious moments to find the right words to ask her next question.

Turning to her side she brought her face close to Ace's, as though her inquiry were a secret and she feared it would be overheard even though they were alone in the room. "Sometimes I worry Ace - what if I cannot bring myself to do what is required when the time comes? Or what if I find the task all too easy? Both results carry consequences I don't care to dwell on. Does it ever get easier with time?" She had originally meant to ask him more regarding his lifestyle and family but as they strayed to the more morbid topic of death she found she couldn't let it go just yet. She wasn't able to pose these questions to others of her rank for fear that her abilities would be called into question, and of course now she would never be able to ask them of her mentor.

Ace looked up at her quietly before she leaned over him bringing her voice down to a whisper. He flinched away at first naturally, but he still listened to his words as he laid still and looked up into her eyes almost as if he was reading her. As if he was figuring the answer for her own question right out of her eyes. After a second though he closed his eyes for a few moments before opening them again to her eyes. "Don't. If you can, keep your hands from being stained by blood. Its not going to be easy at all. Your first kill is always dreadful leaving you trying to convince yourself that it was justified by your reasons, while your logical mind will betray you telling you it wasn't morally correct. As more fall to your hand," he stopped taking in a deep breath before he continued, "it will become easier and the pain that comes with it will fade, but that dull ache will still be there."

When he finished speaking, his eyes no longer held the pain, the sadness, they held a foreign fire to them. A fire that burned in his soul and consumed everything without care with a darker side to them as they almost seemed to glow a piercing blue. Realizing his gaze, he averted his eyes over at something else trying to keep his mind off that before looking back at her again with that sight gone. Still, a little remained, but his eyes had returned to their normal sea color again. He bit his lip slightly tasting the remaining bits of blood from the healed wound letting the metallic taste bring him back. When he'd regained himself completely, he looked into her eyes again willing for more questions or what ever she threw at him.

Aesa felt his advice was probably sound though not applicable to her. She had a specialized function within her society and without it she truly would have nothing. Oh there were of course mages whose abilities fell on the shorter side of the power spectrum but they were usually scribes and assistants for their entire lives. If she delegated herself to such a position she would no longer enjoy any of the comparible freedom that her current status afforded her. In addition to that she truly believed that there were instances where her brand of talent was requried in order to keep the peace and as she was suited to the role at least from a raw talent perspective, could she morally allow those types of rogue mages to continue? None of these arguements or doubts were new to Aesa however and she kept them to herself, not wishing to debate with Ace. She was happy to have his opinion as he had first-hand knowledge of the act.

As his eyes took on a fierce light, Aesa was somewhat taken aback. As Ace clearly made an effort to regain his control Aesa considered what that meant. She had never met someone so full of differing layers that so strong piqued her scholar's interest. When he was finally brought back to himself Aesa continued with ehr questioning, "Who was your mother Ace?" Most often when a child who was part lowering was brought to the lowerworld they did not have any contact with their higherblooded parent. But it would not surprise her if he knew exactly who his mother was.

He closed his eyes biting his lip before looking up at the ceiling in deep thought before looking at her. "I don't know. My father always told me that when I was born, he had to run with me and keep me away from my mother as I wasn't suppose to be born and wasn't allowed to be. She supposedly payed for that fact, but I wouldn't be surprised if she's dead. Alex isn't my full blood sister, her mother is another thief, another rouge gypsy that my father fell for. Aside from that she's never known me, he only told me that she is a reason I have survived so long clashing with magic. He told me I wasn't a complete rouge and she was a beautiful mage. One of the highest classes and the queen's own assistant," he sighed closing his eyes shaking his head as he brought himself back down to reality. It didn't mater who his mother was to him, he'd almost died from magic all the time, sure he was resistant to some of it, though he wasn't sure if he would thank his herritige. He would more be thanking the rigerous training his father put him though.

He scratched his rough face sighing looking up at her again. He felt so odd for answering all these questions but he figured if someone would know him truly before he died or something. Maybe he was just tired of fighting this practicly alone with everyone wanting him dead. Aesa at least relaxed that idea and let him feel more human.

Aesa digested the information Ace had provided - thinking over the Queens's aides and who might resemble him. She knew none of them personally but all were known to the public due to their high ranking office. Only a couple women matched Ace in appearance that would be the appropriate age to have mothered a child. It would have had to have been in secret for the Queen would not tolerate a marriage out of wedlock from any of her ladies, never mind with a lowerling. Given time and resources Aesa was confident she could narrow down the field to the appropriate woman as she would have had to have taken a leave for at least the last half of her pregnancy. But that was something for the future - and she would only present the idea to Ace once she had complied her evidence so as not to raise any potential hopes in that area. It struck her again how quickly she was growing attached to the young male - to entertain the idea that they would continue to see each other after she had reclaimed her place in the higherworld? Ludicrous but she didn't even want to think of another possibility.

His story while not unheard of (save for the high ranking of his mother) was compelling when told by him. Intellectually she knew what happened when children were born without the benefit of full mage blood but she had never really stopped to consider the moral reamifications. Ace had lived a very difficult life even with the apparent love of his father and surely that same life could have been made easier if both parents had been in it to provide support. Aesa herself had always known a happy household so she found it difficult to truly comprehend that woes that befell those with a lesser pedigree.

Covering a yawn with the back of her hand she rested her head on Ace's shoulder, closing her eyes. She knew that this was the first time she had initiated contact with him that wasn't done due to an emergency or medical reason but she felt they had reached a certain level of understanding between them. With a voice heavy with sleep she asked,"Will you ever take back your place as prince?" She couldn't imagine that he wouldn't make the attempt - and succeed. He was too full of life and too clever by half not to.

Ace looked over at her when he felt her weight on his shoulder and he couldn't help himself but to smile lightly feeling her cooler face against him. He wrapped his arm around her softly stroking her shoulder with his thumb as she spoke sounding so tired. It mad him tired knowing that his sleep needs would be full filled in a little. "Of course, I need to. Its my responsibility to do so," he said softly closing his eyes again with his breathing slowing down again to almost unnoticeable as he finally fell asleep. His whole body seemed to shut down as he slept with only his head falling softly to the side resting his face against her and pulling the blanket over both of them without really thinking about how odd it might be if someone saw them. It just felt right laying there with her and cradling her against him.

He didn't move at all in his sleep due to Aesa laying on his arm, but he did get tense a lot as he slept. His hand would ball into a fist, his muscles would contract he just wasn't sleeping well at all as his face was twisted into a scowl. After a while of this, he woke up at sunrise breathing deeper and faster than usual as his body fought to take in that he was fine and nothing was wrong. He looked down at her and gently slipped himself out from under her replacing himself with the warm pillow. He looked out at the sunrise and climbed out the window sitting on the roof in the cold in his pants just looking around quietly. He needed to relax, if this kept up, he was never going to sleep again and Aesa would never get him. Asea. God, he was going to miss her even if he'd only spent a little time with her. He rubbed his eyes trying to clear his mind and be able to think. Everything was blown out of what was normal and that idea had all been lost. He wished that everything would just go away and stop for a little bit. His stress levels were ridiculous as he shook slightly from it. He needed either to be knocked out to get a good sleep or he needed a job. One or the other. Something to take his mind off it all and recuperate.

Aesa was asleep almost immediately after Ace, her body finally rejecting the idea of remaining concious so thoroughly that she had no recourse but to give in. As she slept, she dreamt of vilains persuring her and casting black magics, a shining knight and dragons. Clearly the last couple days were too taxing, and her subconcious had to vent some pressure in order to continue to function. The beautifully painted ceiling had been the last thing she had seen before drifting off - though it was no surprise that her knight had resembled a particular thief she had come to know.

Aesa curled into the pillow, seeking the remaining warmth. As she nuzzled it, her body slowly came awake as though she was prolonging the comfort of a warm and peaceful slumber for as long as possible. The first thing her mind recognized was the fact that Ace was missing from the bed - the second that she missed him. Without a doubt it would have been an awkward morning had she found herself beside him though she was willing to endure a bit more embarassment in order to spend time with him.

Assuming that Ace must have gone downstairs she went to the window to determine the weather for the day, holding her hand up to the chilly pane of glass. A flutter of movement caught her eye and she noticed him sitting out on the slanted rooftop. Knocking gently on the glass she tried to draw his attention her way. There was certainly no way she was about to attempt the precarious climb onto the dewey shingles.

Ace looked out at the stormy weather in the distance with his mind lost before he heard something hit the window repetitively. He looked over seeing Aesa and he smiled slightly and stood up ignoring the dew that tried to collect to him like the roof. " "Its beautiful out if you'd like to join me," he said softly holding a hand out to her after he'd opened up the window. He didn't know if she would trust him, but he hoped she would. For an odd reason, being around her relaxed him enough to be alive without all the pain or adrenaline, just living. Just enjoying himself. "Its not as slick as it looks, I promise. If you do slip, I also promise I'll catch you," he assured her as he looked at her calmly with relaxed and tired eyes, but still willful like he'd been the day before. Honestly, it was near impossible to keep him down long with so much pent up energy that it seemed almost limitless at times.

Aesa looked first from him to the ground below. Far below in her biased estimation. But hadn't he kept his word to date? "You had best be awake and your reflexes honed Master Thief for I am not prepared to tumble off the roof." As the last was spoken she reached out and took his offered hand, stepping gingerly out into the crisp morning air. She made it a point to avoid looking at the street below and kept her eyes focused on Ace's face. He was right - it wasn't nearly as treacherous as it had seemed at first glance but it was still dangerous to her less dexterious self. Using his hand to balance herself she slowly lowered herself to a sitting position, shivering at the cold contact as the dew seeped through her borrowed breeches. "How are you out here with no shirt?" As though her words were a trigger she took in his scarred torso again, blushing as she made eye contact. Well that was a little warmer.

"I promise," he said yet again. Ace held her hand softly but tight keeping her balanced before letting her lower herself. He sat down next to her calmly shivering a little bit but it felt good as he was still extremely warm and still sick from the previous night. He looked over at her raising an eyebrow at her question. "I enjoy the cold. I'm always warm so being out here in the morning feels good and its kind of relaxing," he explained softly closing his eyes. He laid down on his back before looking over at her quietly wondering what was on her mind, but he couldn't ask. It just wasn't possible for him. He picked his head up though sitting up again seeing someone in the distance as a faint small figure. He narrowed his eyes as he leaned forward like a cat who was about to pounce might do. Seeing the small child dart into another house though, he sat back down calmly with a sigh to settle himself back down onto the roof again.

Aesa shook her head and leaned forward, warpping her arms about her knees to keep her body heat as contained as possible. While she was not one who demanded the more excessive creature comforts in life she did like to stay warm. As Ace leaned forward intently, Aesa squinted her eyes to make out the small figure of a child heading home in the early hours. Assuming he was out waiting for Alex, one corner of her mouth lifted in a half smile though she turned her head to the side to hide it from him. "You know you truly should still be in bed. I was not jesting when I said I would tie you down if need be." And she wasn't. His welfare while mission critical for her tasks weighed heavily on her mind for more personal reasons that she refused to analyze. She wondered if it would become necessary as he seemed incapable of sitting still for more than a few moments at a time.
