distructobob Ok...Listen to flight of the bumblebee...Our teacher tried to teach us that, but its to hard for our so called "advanced band"...No were just playing this one that has these notes (for a flute, and there low) G-D, B-D,A-Eb, C-Eb, B-F, D-F, C-G (STARTS GETTING HIGHER), E-G...THATS JUST A WARM UP FOR US. Were playing Peer Gynt suite #1 at the moment smile Oh god, Flight of the Bumblebee. I printed out a copy of it last year and showed it to my BD and he goes, "I believe in the band, I really do, but I doubt we'd even get through one measure of it." so now it's in my folder...tempting me to have a go at it.

We played Southern Harmony! It wasn't to terrible after the 30th time correcting all the fine detailed stuff. But when I first saw it, I only saw BLACK INK ON TEH PAPER. Man, the flutes are way up in the stratosphere! T'was awesome though! biggrin

Flight of the Bumblebee is SO easy, it's just fast chromatics.

El Camino Real. But only because I come in after 198 measures with different time signatures in between. ;_;

Last year the senior concert band played a song called Meadowlands (I was part of the senior band). Us french horns had the hardest parts, because we had to play up to the high D, E, and F for at least ten measures (4-4 time). We were still learning how to play high last year, so we made a mental agreement on who would stand out more throughout the part so then overall our section wouldn't fall apart.

It's not exactly for Concert Band, but the hardest piece I've played on the violin is the Transformation Scene in Beauty and the Beast, for the pit orch. Talk about hand cramps... Bleck. Consistently crossing over strings and the first and third finger for 16th notes... I'm not that coordinated.

For our next concert (I'm in wind ensamble, the top band) we're playing an American theme (American composers and pieces).
For sure we're playing Lincoln Portrait, The January February March, and Chester.
If you haven't had a chance to hear Lincoln Portrait--do. It's really cool.

Looking back it wasnt hard, but Suite from Bohemia. I played it in seventh grade for MPA. Yeah, i guess it was hard for seventh grade, but it was only a grade three or four.

BTW, if anyone cares, Chester is like impossible! It has us bass clarinets playing staccato in the upper register. Fast. Sixteenth notes.
(If there are any other bc players, they'll understand just how difficult it is.)
I would venture a guess that it is between grades 6 and 7.

The hardest pieces my band has are also my favorites. >>;
Our top pieces for this year are Festive Overture by Shostakovich, Star Wars (as in the original concert band version), and Suite in E for Military Band by Holst.
The first is hard because of tempo and notes... its in cut time eighth-note runs at about 152 bpm, and on top of that, we have to manage to keep a hundred people together. The second is hard... I'm not too sure why. It doesn't exactly sound the best when we play it, though. The last is hard stylistically; the notes and rhythms are the easy part. All the work goes toward the emotion, style, and all that jazz.

Actually, my hs. marching band did harrison's dream for our marching show three years ago. I would have to say the hardest piece we played was klinnekov's 3rd symphony. (sorry about the bad spelling sweatdrop )
