Off topic: I got married on Friday. heart

On topic: I have now told Walter's owner that we are not keeping him for any longer. We're fed up with him. He keeps trying to mount Mercury (who is also a male), he won't let any other cat get attention (from us or another cat), and he's got a new little habit of pooping in the litterbox anytime one of ours do to cover their scent with his own, and he does not cover his poop.

I feel bad and everything, but he doesn't get along with our cats, and quite honestly, I think he's not a cat to be in a multi-cat household. Our cats come first, so he has to go.

His owner is now in the process of finding someone else to take him.

oh noes! i didn't get a picture of grumbles sleeping while covering her eyes with her paw! gonk heart

congratulations, ah... mrs. ditz! whee

it's too bad you have to give up walter. he's the orange one with six toes, right? it does sound like he has dominance issues, and it is important for cats in a multi-cat household to get along with each other.

on a random note, my big boy cat (mitts) has absolutely no idea how to cover up his business when he's done with the litter box. he just blindly digs around. from the sound of him scratching up a storm, you'd think he's digging a tunnel all the way to china. my little girl cat (grumbles), on the other hand, is more discreet about her business.

no idea why i am talking about litter boxes when i am currently eating gonk .

Walter is the orange one with 7 toes, the orange one with 6 toes is actually mine. His owner is taking him tonight, but she's saying that she's going to have to give him to the SPCA, the only shelter around here, and they will put him down if he doesn't get adopted. I think she might be trying to guilt me, and I really don't want to see that happen to him, but I can't afford to be evicted. I have three cats to worry about, and there's no other cheaper apartments in town that allow pets. We already got a warning last week because of his poop smell.

He literally just went into the litter box and pooped again to cover the scent of whichever of mine just went. My husband is standing there watching him paw all around the box, but not cover it.

All of mine are pretty good about using the litterboxes and covering their business. Mercury, my orange cat, sometimes confuses the litterboxes with the bathtub though. sweatdrop

Congratulations Blue! Did you guys have a big ceremony or something small for family?

That's really too bad about Walter. Sexual and territorial behaviour is really disruptive. sad Is he neutered?

My girls aren't fabulous about covering up their poop, though if you listen to them in the box it sounds like there's some major excavations going on. Or maybe they do cover it up and then the next cat who goes digging through there uncovers it. I'm not sure.

Thankfully I don't have to worry too much about the smell - I have two covered litterboxes, with pine litter in one and wheat litter in the other and both are pretty decent for absorbing smells. Since I started with the wheat litter they pee on both boxes but both of them only poop in the wheat one. I'm pretty sure they prefer the wheat litter because it's very fine and soft on the paws, though unfortunately it gets tracked everywhere.

Obviously Walter moving out should fix the problems in your house, but if you should end up with more cat issues, maybe consider picking up a Feliway diffuser? I hear good things about it, and they're always out of stock when I look at PetSmart.

I hope Walter's owner can find a new home for him and doesn't just dump him at the SPCA.

Thanks. We just had a small ceremony with friends and family, then went out to dinner afterwards.

We just got him neutered on Monday. It's stopped him from mounting Mercury, but he's still doing all his dominance things. Not even five minutes after I posted that last post, Oreo went to use the bathroom and she barely managed to get out of the litterbox before Walter walked in and pooped again.

We had covered litterboxes, but after Oreo gained some weight, she refused to go through the door and pooped in front of or behind the boxes. We took off the tops and it solved the problem. Our litter is nothing special, but they don't tend to smell unless they don't cover their business.

I'm hoping the new one we get won't be like Walter.

I told her that if she can't find someone to take him, to post an ad offering him for free before giving him up to the SPCA. That way, at least she can check out the family she gives him to.

Lucky is so chatty tonight. He's got one of his toy mice and keeps announcing (very loudly) that he's just "caught" something and I need to look.

It's really funny how much he communicates. The other cats cry if they need to go out, or if they're hungry (then run to the door/foodbowl), but Lucky keeps track of everyone. If one of the other cats or the dog is at the door wanting to come inside, he cries until someone lets them in. If everyone isn't inside when it gets dark, he sits at the door and waits for them. He's very interactive, but he needs a LOT of attention. Sometimes I'm glad the other cats aren't quite as demanding. sweatdrop

i was just thinking the same thing about mitts. he's a very social cat and he needs a lot of attention. he talks in chirps, follows me from room to room, and taps me whenever he wants a good scritching... which happens several times a day.

one of the reasons why i got grumbles is because mitts is so social, he needs a kitty companion. but then grumbles won't have anything to do with him @_@. but i love them both very much.

Blue: Well, good luck to her and Walter. I hope she can find a place for him where he'll be happy and well cared for and won't have other cats to compete with,

Clarion: Both my girls are pretty demanding. The follow me from room to room and talk a lot. When Violet was the only cat she trained me to play fetch with her, which was our compromise between her needing attention and play, and me not being willing to drop everything to play with her all evening, every evening.

Getting Clover definitely helped redirect some of the demands for attention, though they're both still very interactive.

I like it though, despite it getting to be a bit much on occasion. I'd rather have interactive cats than cats who only treated me as a source of food.

I think it's so cute when they act really excited about their toys.

Mercury is crawling all over me as I write this, and he's definately not making it very easy.

Mercury is not very talkative at all. He doesn't even cry or meow when he goes in the car. In fact, I can't really think of what his voice sounds like. He does have a very special purr though. It's very loud and...well, I can't really explain it. It's just not normal. He's very social with me though, and any time he wants attention, he just jumps up on me and purrs.

Esper is pretty talkative. He'll talk if Mercury is being too rough with him, he'll talk if he's hungry, he'll talk if he's bored and he'll talk if he wants attention. Of course, if he wants attention, you have to get down to his level since he won't be picked up or put in someone's lap.

Oreo is only talkative when she's chirping at birds, or wants someone to come to her.

God, cats watching birds is the most adorable, hilarious thing ever. All the chirping and silent meowing and squeaking and trembling. Excited kitties are too cute.

I am officially pissed! We went and applied for adoption at the shelter today and we got declined because my landlord told them we couldn't have anymore cats. That is bullshit! People in this complex have more then four cats, and we only have three right now. To be fair, they don't know we don't have Walter anymore, but I am about fed up with this building. I will get a part time job to pay for a more expensive place that allows cats just to get out of this place. If they aren't complaining about our cats, then they're avoiding us so they don't have to fix our apartment.
PostPosted: Thu Feb 21, 2008 3:55 pm

Wow, that really sucks. Did the shelter actually call your landlords and ask?

It definitely sounds like you need a new place.
