Naohiko would make sure his clothing was fully on as he responded. "Yes?" He would then pick up Setsuna and pet him, trying to calm the dog down.

Gendo goes to take a seat, still inwardly wincing at how much trouble Setsuna may cause. Curse his luck. Most dogs and animals go crazy around him. This one goes crazy when he isn't around. "It is not a problem Doji-san."

The man on the other side of the door would not respond at first, as Setsuna seemed to be rather boisterous. "Ah... I was told by someone who wished to speak with you, that if you were awake, your presence was requested. I can take you to this person," he would explain.

The magistrate would wait a moment or two, as if inwardly contemplating something. Instead, he would reach behind the table, taking an item wrapped in a light blue cloth. Unfolding the fabric, it would reveal the jitte that you had made and had sent to him.
Before he could speak, however, the kettle began to whistle, and instead he turned his attention towards the tea he was preparing instead.

".....ahhah." Naohiko stared at the poor peasant while determining what to do. He couldn't very well palm Setsuna off on Kaichiyo, could he? If he put Setsuna back into his or Gendo's room, there would shortly be a Setsuna sized opening in the rice walls as the dog would go after Gendo. His half awake brain struggled with all of the ramifications of his actions, but Naohiko could come up with no better ones. "One second..."
The Kraken would then close the door and attempt to calm Setsuna down, promising to find Gendo after this was all done. Regardless of the success or failure, Naohiko would open the door again and sigh, holding Setsuna in his off arm, His wakazaishi at his side, he would gesture with the other. "Lead on."

Gendo would just wait, eyeing the jitte critically. Did he make a mistake somewhere in the designs? He knew the core weapon itself was good, but the adornments may have been off and perhaps insulting? Or was it the note and gift itself? He did not mean to insult the man at all.
It was times like this that made the smith really wish he had more of a talent for the court arts.

Kyouya woke up as per her usual morning, getting herself prepared before heading out towards the Kraken in the visitor's quarters. She still had no idea yet how to deal with what she had overheard or how to go about verifying the identity of the Mantis's targets.
So for now, she would just deal with the matter at hand and learn how the Kraken were faring. She paused when she saw Naohiko with another man, looking to go somewhere. She thought about it for a moment before staying a bit out of sight. Kaichiyo would be fine if let in her room, but she wanted to see what her familiars did on their own. And so she would follow him and the messenger.

"You need not panic," the magistrate would say, not directly looking at Gendo as he said this, but instead focusing on filling the cups. "It's a well-made item. I tried to tell you this last night, but you were... distracted. I saw no fault in the design."
After filling the cups with the hot water, the tea-leaves already included into the cups themselves, the magistrate would slide the cup and saucer intended for Gendo halfway across the table. "What was your motivation for crafting a jitte, of all things, and designing it as you did, if you don't mind me asking?"

@ Naohiko (with Kyouya trailing behind):
Setsuna would still be displeased with your handling of him, writhing in your grasp as he tried to escape. You're able to keep him in check with your roll, but he's not happy.
Naohiko, you would be led by the servant a bit aways from your wing. Unless you wanted to make a Perception/Investigation (Notice) to notice Kyouya, you won't notice her. The servant makes no indication he notices her.
The servant brings you to a meeting chamber (not unlike the one Gendo's in, but if you're near him you don't hear him), and there is a woman sitting across the table with a fan in front of her face, of generic, unaffiliated design. She is dressed in greens. The servant would bow as he stood by the open, waiting for you to enter.
"Thank you for coming, Naohiko-san," the woman would say in a familiar voice. Snapping the fan shut, Moshi Ruri would smile at you, and it would be a mischievous smile. "Please, come in, have a seat. I wanted to talk."

Since you stated you have left and came back, you arrive back at your room from the baths shortly after Naohiko and Setsuna have left. You've barely been in there a minute when you hear hurried footsteps approach your door.
"Excuse me, Himura Kaichiyo-hime!" a stressed woman's voice would sound. "Please, open the door, I have an urgent warning."

Feeling for all the world as if Ruri is going to live up to her clan's namesake and bite his head off, Naohiko would bow carefully to the shugenja. "Good morning, Ruri-san. I hope you don't mind Setsuna-chan accompanying me?" He would then take a seat, carefully holding on to Setsuna as he does so. "I believe I owe you some stories, yes?"

Gendo took his own cup, bowing his head to the other man. Taking a moment to think, he spoke calmly. "I am the Kraken clan's weaponsmith. I felt it would be a disservice to make something as a showpiece instead of a functional item to showcase that. Since it was for the contest, a jitte was small and simple enough to meet my requirements and that of my limited time frame. I intended to leave it here, as I was using the Crane's resources, and thus coloring and designs. I had previously found the coin I used at the end during the treasure hunt and thought it would fit well, since jittes are normally used by those in office and the coin is a reminder of the age and prestige of the Crane clan."
He'd take a drink, nodding. "I prefer to be practical about my smithing, as to not waste resources. I aim to be the best at my craft that I can be and hope that one day my work can compete against even the products of the Tsi-smiths."

Kyouya tailed Naohiko into the meeting room. It was a general area, but certainly not overly secure nor overtly dangerous. She didn't recognize the voice, but it was someone Naohiko seemed to know, so it was only partially alarming. Hopefully between the openness of the area and the small dog, he would be safe enough.
Adjusting her kimono, she bowed to a passerby before heading back to check on Kaichiyo.

Thankfully she was mostly dressed by the time the call came, leaving her to start in surprise, but quickly let out a deflated sigh. And the day was starting out so well. "What I would give for a day without troubles."
It didn't take her long at all to secure her obi into some semblance of order and then slide open the door, giving the messenger a regal but worried look. "I'm here, go ahead with it."

The magistrate would give an odd expression, like he could not decide between a smirk or a frown. "Being a minor clansman, I can... understand your appreciation of the contributions of other minor clans. While I haven't witnessed the work of the Tsi first-hand, I assure you, the smiths of the great clans are not to be taken lightly. The Crab, the Lion, and even the Crane, can create weapons and items of great quality, significance, and beauty. And then beyond even the Great Clans, the smiths of the Imperial Legion excel even them."
The magistrate would give a dismissive wave with his hand. "But enough about that. I did take note of the quality of work you achieved in such a short amount of time. Would you be interested in continuing such work? If you can craft an item that catches the eyes of the right people, you can get great recognition, and perhaps one day find an opportunity for you to join one of the Great Clans. I see potential, but I know not how high your aspirations go." He would then partake of his tea.

Ruri would gesture with the downward wave of one hand that the terms were satisfactory. "Of course, of course. Though I think the last time I saw him, he was a bit better behaved than this."
Setsuna whined loudly and still actively fidgeted within Naohiko's grasp.
As Naohiko would move into the chamber, the servant would close the door behind him, and depart.
"So, I think congratulations are in order. Both for clanmates, but for you in particular. You and Kyouya-san, that is. Though of course the competition was scarce in that particular field, the judges still were impressed with the quality of the paper you created. The person presenting it on your behalf did a superb job selling it."
Ruri would stare into Naohiko's eyes, studying them with what seemed to be rapt fascination, resting her chin upon one hand, her elbow propped upon her lap.

You leave Naohiko with his current company and begin making your way to the minor clan wing. As you nearly finish your trip there, you begin to notice something. A presence of Daidoji guards that seemed to very quickly appear. You would notice them begin to move about in pairs or small groups, and one pair does approach you. They are, of course, armed (with spears).
"Excuse me, Scorpion-san. I'm going to have to ask you to return to your room." The two men had fairly serious expressions upon their face, but they didn't seem angry. The tone of the one that spoke seemed to carry a sense of urgency.
Unfortunately, going back to your room was the exact opposite direction that you were walking.

The female Daidoji was a woman that looked... it was hard to pin her age, but about ten years your senior. She was fully armored, though not actively armed. You have not met her before, and you didn't really recognize her either. There was something in her face that didn't seem right, though.
"I believe you are in danger, Himura-hime," she would say. "I was told that there was a... man, that you had arrived with, that was taken into our custody." With a deathly serious tone, she would further explain: "He's escaped."
Her eyes would quickly dart around your room. "Where are your yojimbo?" After the response Kaichiyo would give, the Daidoji woman would nod. "I have orders to bring you to a safer location. You should gather your things, and I will take care of you until you arrive there."

Gendo would nod. "My father traveled through their lands when he was younger, thus his appreciation of their work rubbed off on me. I meant no insult to the smiths of the Great Clans, as their smiths must have knowledge, skill, and facilities that I would take the kami blessing me to compete with."
Listening to the question and raising his brow, the one-eyed smith thought on it. "Weaponsmithing is my duty, I am going to continue doing so. But I sense that you wished to talk to me about doing work for you or one of your interests, not for my clan. What would you like me to make, Doji-san?"

Naohiko was very unsure of the world at the moment and petted Setsuna as he tried to gather his thoughts. "...I'm very honored to have such a sponsor. I'm sure with Shosuro-san's aid, my paper was of a better caliber than it usually is." the bushi tried to deflect the topic slightly. "I'm sure our paper was not the only display to attract your attention. Did any others catch your eye, Ruri-san?"

The little princess' eyes went wide at the news, shock and disbelief that someone could escape the custody of the famed Daidoji. That suspicion made her acutely aware that something was off about this guard. Though she had no real reason to doubt her, it was worth getting a second opinion. Or third, after an acute assessment of her own.
"I would not object to sleeping in safer quarters if that's the case, but I will not run from that cursed man. It's as much my responsibility to see him come to justice as yours, for bringing him here. I would speak with Chikuma and gather my yojimbo before going to this place." she declared with the keen air of authority, eyes carefully assessing the woman.
