I need to read more of the L5R book. I think I know what the Bloodspeakers are and have a decent concept of why the shadowlands are bad news, and I think Rain told me about the Kolat, but I still don't know what a gaijin is. My best guess is non-Japanese.

Pretty much. Although in this case, it's non Rokugani, like the people from the Burning Sands or the Ivory Islands or the tribes north of the Phoenix territories.

Gaijin roughly translates as 'dirty foreigner', from my understanding :3
And Fish, Shadowlands Taint is to L5R as the Warp is to Warhammer 40k. Everyone keeps getting bright ideas about it, and it always ends up a mess.

That is why the crab are there. People with not too many bright ideas and the families who do are either more interested in building thing or are more interested in dissecting the shadowland creatures corpses.

Kuni heal and study so Hida Fight
Hiruma scout so Hida know where to fight.
Yasuki buy things so Hida fight
Toritaka handle the incorporeal stuffages.

Kaiu craft weapons and armour so Hida can fight. Kaiu maintain fortifications and build new ones so Hida can fight. Kaiu build traps to help the Hida defend those fortifications. Kaiu lead Hiruma through the secret catacombs of the Kaiu Kabe which they only know of and how to get through it without encountering traps.

Gaijin should be translated to 'Badass, awesome foreigners'.
You got the Merenae, which can be described as spanish conquistadors IN SPAC--I mean, WITH SHIPS AND GAIJIN PEPPAR.
You got the Yodotai, which are MAXIMUS IN SPAC--I mean, ROMANS IN THE DESERT, conquering all and being awesome with their phalanx.
You got... desert people who use badass magic and hang out with zombies.
You got ASSASSINS, which may or may have not taught the Scorpion a thing or two.
And the IVORY KINGDOMS, which IIRC, are destroyed. Completely. Silly british and their knights. JAPAN IS SUPERIOR, SMELLY GAIJIN.
That said... Rokugan is a tiny speck of land compared to the rest of the actual world.
