Plummy: Looking great so far! I like it better without the dragon/phoenix in the sky. ^^ And I think continuing with the patterns is a good idea.
My suggestion is to separate the figures and the background a bit more by using saturation and contrast. Right now, the background has just as much contrast and saturation as the foreground, AND they share a similar color palette.
Here are some extreme examples of how to separate the FG and the BG:
[x] [x] [x]I don't think you were going for such extreme separation, though. Here are some less extreme ones.
[x] -- Think of the dude in the back as a part of the background.
[x] -- The building in the back VS the building in front
[x] -- The far background has extreme separation, but look at that one tree in the middleground.
Not all pictures need their FG and BG separated.
This is a good example where FG and BG have a similar palette and level of contrast. I think your picture would benefit from more separation because the figure is all over the image (not necessarily a bad thing), and the background has a lot more going on.
That's it about the FG/BG issue... My only other suggestion would be to reduce color compartmentalization, i.e. make the colors interact with each other more.
