I've noticed that this generation thrives on misery too. First off, like you said, kids face more these days. plus the music that's popular now. the songs either make kids feel hopeless or make them think that drugs and sex are things that define your life. Either way, it leaves them feeling empty inside from lack of something. I'm not saying the music is bad, I'm just saying it has an impact.

especially and around here, parents don't help much either. a lot of parents these days are to lazy or stoned or drunk to help their kids and teach them morals. so their kids wander aimlessly and join their parents or the wrong crowd and have the crushing feeling of not knowing what will become of them.

and since this generation thrives on misery, you never know who's faking it to seem complex and who actually has a problem and needs help. Parents can't tell the difference either so sometimes they just think their kid is trying to make a huge soap opera out of life.

I'd say a lot of the problems that teenagers have, including depression, have to do with their egocentrism. In the past, teenagers were expected to give of their time and talent for the sake of their families, taking on the responsibilities that come with growing up. These days everyone is taught to put themselves first, focusing their lives inward. In short, we've been programmed for the persuit of instant and fleeting self-gratification. I think that this focus leaves people feeling unfulfilled and shallow.

Perhaps the solution is as simple as focusing our lives outward, giving of ourselves, and accepting our responsibilities as we are confronted by them (as opposed to running from them).

Okay so I've read all the posts in this discussion so far. One thing I've noticed that has not been mentioned is exercise. Don't get me wrong I don't do a lot of it or anything but it should be put in here. Most teens that are emo/different/goth don't really go out and do a lot of physical exercise. Doing physical things, such as running, playing sports, and dance, brings what are called endophins (the happy chemical) to your head. That has been clinicly proven that exercise does help. Most teens these days just sit in front of their computers/tvs/video game consoles, and forget about going outside to do anything. So basically you go from a little kid that runs around all the time with all those endorphins, to someone that doesn't do all that much.

Also add in to the loss of the "happy chemicals" plus, all of the drama that goes on at schools now, like, unrealistic standards of beauty, off and on again relationships, grades, abusive parents or parents who don't listen or care, and all of cruelty by other teens, will now cause a lot of "depression" if it can so be called.

One other statement, Emo is a choice, Depression is a condition.

I definetly agree that teens today are very much individualistic. I have so many problems making friends becuase most people I run into are only concerned about themseleves and never put much effort into real relationships (hence most of my friends are older). Everyone views they're problems are much worse than others for attention or whatever reasons. However, I don't think it has anything to do wiht depression. Angelkiss's theory makes much more sense.

oh *absolutely*. when I was a kid, we were active almost all the time. nowadays (and for the last 10 years or so) kids have been holing themselves up playing video games. physical activity does affect ones mood, and reduces stress. and then there are the drugs a lot of kids are into. coming down from a lot of these highs causes them to 'crash' and it can be both a physical and mental thing. and ones mental outlook directly affects ones mood. what's worse, is when someone IS diagnosed with clinical or manic depression and turns to drugs for relief... when all is said and done, it tends to make it worse than it normally would be.

there are a lot of reasons for depression... not just in teenagers, but with everyone. some say it is our society itself that causes this. the way we live. we tend to send our young population mixed signals for a lot of things. for example, on one hand we have things like 'barbie dolls', paper thin manikins modeling outfits in store windows, and annorexic superstars (who are roll models for many a young girl wanting to be popular).. and on the other hand fast food joints advertising DOUBLE burgers and supersized meals, their commercials suggesting a 4th meal of the day past midnight because they're open late(the WORST time for anyone to eat)!

conditions like depression are virtually non-existent in tribal cultures, where their values are on their people and the earth rather than material comforts and gains. I think, on a subconscious level, the way we live and where society as a whole places it's values has a lot to do with it.

there is a book called Ishmael by Daniel Quinn that addresses these among many other issues pertaining to what's wrong with us and how we got the way we are. Its a fictional story, as in.. the main character is a talking gorilla named Ishmael... but the lessons Ishmael teaches.. are real, and imo, important. a lot of people I've talked to who have read it have said that the book conveys what they always felt but could never put into words. and its true for me too. it truly made me look at our civilization in a new way.

The question that I wonder my self sometimes.... okay, here is my own personal opinion about this.

Teenagers are like that because they have a lot to worry about. Grades, getting a job, thinking about their future lives... These are only some of the things that make teens depressed or stressed out.

But I think it is a natural thing. You have rights to worry, because you don't know how life may turn out for you, and you will always be worried until the deed is done.

And that is what I think if the whole situation.

the thing is, there's a big difference between worrying about stuff and being depressed. sure, teens have a lot of stuff to stress over, but so do adults. once you're out of school and on your own you have a lot of "new" stresses to deal with... paying for your own rent and utilities, finding the right job and the stresses of that job, new relationships perhaps even parenthood. in short, people will encounter stress and things to worry about all their lives. I dont believe that alone causes depression or else everyone would be depressed. and I wasnt, I never was.

*true* depression is like a sickness that often times requires medical attention. and it afflicts not only teenagers but people of all ages.

I read in USA Today about 6 months ago that a study came out showing that the teenage brain is not fully developed, they have all the logic of an adult but there inhibitions are not. this causes many of them to do things on gut instincts alone. combine this with there fluctuating emotions and you have a dangerous combo. this logic hurts them in the later run as they look back on the decisions they make causing some of the depression. most of this though is caused by the hierarchy of teen popularity, and peer pressure. again combine this with there gut reactions, and you get more bad decisions that lead into more depression.

I don't know about the rest of you, but after my 17th year(20 now, I am not an old fart scream ) of life, I started thinking more about my decisions. At first I just thought it was because I was finally listening to my parents, but after reading this report I believe it was my inhibitions catching up with my logic. It was also around this time I quit letting what other people think run my life(being a huge(both amount and my size) geek) and doing what I wanted.
I hope this sheds a little light on the situation, or at least helps someones argument.

the thing that has affected our generation to turn them into depressed let downs is the fact that several things r combing to make one big problem. like for starters, puberty and the changes we undertake are extremely hard on us physically and mentally. second exercise. it releases chemicals in the brain that make you happy, while food with things with caffeine and sugar make u addicted so you want it more and when you don't get it you crash. then you add in stress from school, work, or anywhere else and you get one teenager.

indeed! not to mention all the other chemicals (additives, preservatives, fertilizer, steroids, antibiotics..) we pump into or spray onto our food in mass production these days.. there's no saying what kind of an affect it could have in the long term on a developing brain. they say that it's the steroids they put in our beef that cause even our pre-teens to physically develop earlier than they used to. I've seen many 12-14 year olds with bigger boobs than me so it wouldnt surprise me in the least. so there's no telling what these chemicals could do.

i firmly believe it has a lot to do with hormone & testerone & and
estrogen (girls) teens are starting to develop this chemicals that are body's naturally produce but in teens it is more present to the emotional factor of behavior such as depression due to the imbalance of this natural chemical process that are bodies go threw

I agree with a lot of the things people are saying here. Lack of exercise, combined with general attitude, lack of discipline, lack of a good social figure to look up to, the bad news shown all over by the media...all of these things collect together to form what we see today.

i think that its because parents are home less and let their kids raise themselves so they give them less guidance/encouragement. bullying can also causes depression...but then it could be hormones too

Now, I live in a well-off neighborhood as of now, but came from a neighborhood in Rhode Island where our house was 65,000, made in the early 1920's, and elementary school students were caught smoking cigarettes at least once a week. If theres anything that I've noticed between the kids ive met here and the ones that i knew over there, its that the kids where i am now are spoiled silly; they get anything and everything that they want, but their parents are never around or just dont care. there are a few exceptions, but for the most part, these families havent eaten together around a dinner table in over a year. Another thing is that, generally speaking, everybody at school likes rap and hip hop or rock, heavy metal, etc. and the lyrics to mst ofthose songs are not exactly cheerful. Many of them are about sad things that happened(rock music) or about gangs, drugs, sex, girls' asses, and violence in general(rap). If these are the people whom teenagers look up to as their role models, then the answer to the problem is obvious: kids just dont have any role models such as their parents. Not even their siblings because their siblings are most likely in the same boat that they are. Not to ramble on(even though I already am), but life nowadays is much much much more complicated for this generation then it ever was for the kids of the previous generation. The school systems are adding on more and more s**t by the day, theres an abundance of violence in the world, not every kid gets along like they used to in the 60's, mostly because of contrasting interests in musical tastes, and again, kids look up to rappers as role models, and think its cool to smoke, or do drugs, or wear your pants and shorts halfway down your a**. but its not. well, thats my 2 cents for the day. im gonna go get and iced tea cool

There really is no way to answer that correctly. I am a teen, and I'm not very depressed, but everyone is different. I personally think its because of peer pressure, social acceptance, modern expectations, hormonal imbalance, Emotional connections, relationship problems, love, anger, hatred, fear, and a lot of other things that I'm not going to get into.
